It's great to see all platforms doing great but this is for us only. Would love to see Ms try a little harder in other markets like middle East where they are non existent at the moment even tough Xbox 360 was huge here

People getting salty that XBox is mentioned are very strange...MS would have been in trouble if the Xbox division did not grow significantly from last year after all MS has done services and HW wise, especially considering how bad last year was for XBox HW. I think many consumers would have been very ill advised to pass up Xbox this year with how much of an olive branch MS has been extending

Yeah, that's something.

That's why when some were like wtf happened to God of War in this month's NPD, they must didn't see the overall list for 2018.

Also good show for DBZF...i hope Arc saw a majority of that revenue, they deserve it.

Pointing out the article gives as misleading impression is not hating on good news. What are you even talking about?

"The NPD highlighted particularly strong sales for Xbox One as well as plug and play devices such as Nintendo's NES and SNES Classic Editions - something that has been a running trend in the firm's recent monthly reports."

That's the only part of the article that talks about Xbox One's sales, it even talks about the SNES C sales as well. You're not going to misconstrue the SNES C as the best selling console in the US, are you?

Look, stop lying to yourself. You wanted something complain about and it backfired.

Have some dignity.

For many people, there were in trouble since the beginning of the generation and there was no possible way to even imagine such an increase.

Of course I wouldn't misconstrue the SNESc as the leader, because it's not even a real console.

Look, stop lying to yourself. You wanted something complain about and it backfired.

Have some dignity.
Then you insult me, but you want to talk about dignity? Classy

God of War damn.
Happy for Microsoft as well.

Also Switch software while considered soft compared to the onslaught last year impresses.

Kirby made top 3
DK top 5 for two months
Labo Top 5 April
Mario Tennis Aces number 1 June
Octopath number 1 July.

It's crazy how Switch software is being received in the US.
I can't even imagine how Super Mario Party, Pokemon Let's Go, and Smash Ultimate do.

MatPiscatella
So for each console platform(big 3) what game do you think surprised you the most? As in what game on Switch, PS4, and Cbox One have surprised you?

It's weird that 5 out of the 10 best selling games this year weren't released this year.
One of the benefits of service games is that they have very, very long legs due to the constant updates that keep them relevant.

This is how something like Rainbow Six Siege starts with pretty modest sales, and now has over 35 million players. If this were 2007 instead where the devs just moved on to the next game, it probably would have stopped around 2-3 million.

PS4 sales are way ahead XB1... close to twice more.

Not in the US it isn't. And this is an NPD thread.

Of course it explain... part of the $ growth is due X but part is because the deals like MS is selling 150k consoles per month at $250 instead $100k consoles per month at $300 like last year... selling more at lower price generates more $ in most cases.

MS is selling more XB1 S this year than last year due the lower price... add the additional X sales (not present last year) and you will have the % growth they had this year.

The only console without significant deals is the Switch. Both the PS4 and Xbox One have had deals in place.
You really don't have to downplay (as usual). The PS4 had a strong 2017, with pretty great exclusive lineup and with the Pro still relatively fresh. So there's less room for growth. Simple.

When I think about it, the only market I've seen them make a real effort with outside of the US is South America.

After the tiered country debacle with the Xbox One launch, I wouldn't be surprised to see them make a more conscious effort to appeal to the European and Asia markets with their next console. Esepcially with the new CEO in charge.

Eh?

Not the leader during Wii/PS3/360 era.. (third actually) so where do you get "decades" from?

I pointed out before perfection isn't needed for my statement to be true. Not in the context of who i was talking to.

Cool...I'll counter that with pointing out how abysmal Sony's launch was and how close they were at the end. That's also giving the 360 a years head start. Not sure exactly when wii launched.

True, but last year had less games from 2016. My point was that this year has been pretty light on AAA games so far.

You should also add that Xbox is officially sold in fewer countries than PlayStation.

Very nice to hear all of them doing well. Goes to show when you LISTEN to gamers, they give you a chance. Nintendo, MS and Sony all learnt from their mistakes.

H2 2018 will be EPIC, probably the biggest H2 ever.

At least two people in this thread seem to be _very_ upset with Xbox's turnaround and positive outlook. If these results make you upset already, then brace yourselves for the coming years ;)

- "what is an Xbox?"-kid from Japan
- PlayStation worldwide brand
- JRPGs
- securing exclusives by "funding" them
- COD (and other major titles) exclusive marketing
- more and better first party

Sony can lose market share with stronger competition but will most likely still win next gen until they feck something up in a major way but I don't see that happening

That's not the reason.

I did a test - my wife read the article and guess what - she thinks that X1 is the best selling console in first half of 2018 in US.
Some members here really trying to spin that PS4 owners are full of butthurt and salty because X1 is highlighted in article. Really, that's not the reason.

Anyone else happy MH and DBFZ are still in so far? With CODBO4, SOTR, Spiderman, RDR2 and BFV coming soon I reckon they will lose their space. Also GOW's 2nd place is pretty impressive. Wonder how spiderman will compare.

That's how this industry works. You don't see it happening until it does. Not saying your assumptions are wrong just pointing out Switch's success, PS3/Xbox One failed launches, etc are the type of surprises that shake everything up.

Oh hey this is a really fun question!

Well, first, FORTNITE on like ALL of them.

But for specific surprises not called Fortnite?

PS4 - God of War. Complete outlier in both metacritic as well as sales performance. No game like it should sell this well when you look at the rest of the market. Absolutely separating itself in just about every way when it comes to sales performance. Never would have seen this level of performance coming. Truly remarkable. Honorable mention to Detroit: Become Human.

Xbox One - PUBG - Some may call this not a surprise, but seeing this kind of game find big success on the consoles was a bit unexpected. Honorable mention: Xbox Game Pass Day 1 Games - All of the titles which have launched day 1 on Game Pass have exceeded my sales expectations.

Switch - Mario Kart 8 - Top 10 YTD, no signs of slowing down at all. Not super surprising that it's an evergreen, but it's like evergreen+++. Honorable mention: every indie game coming to eShop.

So yeah, Fortnite and God of War my biggest surprises so far.

Cool question, cheers.

So much salt for a sign of a healthy industry but your favorite company is not highlighted in the news .... SMH
It's so weird... Lol

This kind of stuff is the reason I've been considering stopping posting on the forum sometime in the near future. The level of discourse has gotten extremely rough. I'm trying to hold out but idk if it's worth it really
Pls don't leave because of a few bad eggs. It's very interesting reading your posts they give some interesting insights..Just Ignore the fanboys and focus on what actually matters. I hope the mods step up though..

How is fortnite doing on Xbox vs PS4? I'd expect it to be better on PS4 as you can play without Ps+ but maybe the lower general entry price of the Xbox one trumps that?

Driving factors for Xbox One sales I'm 2018 are not deals from all data I've seen.

It's the combo of X, Game Pass, and Fortnite. Also just consumers feeling better about the brand in general

I also agree with MatPiscatella that 2019 will be down YoY for the industry through the majority of the year as we approach the launch of next generation in 2020

I'm not sure what they can do in those markets this gen.

In Japan they have only sold around 100,000 units. Last gen they were at 1.4 million after five years.

Like many others here, I really appreciate your posts, whether they're insightful or humorous (or both!). I know it can be stressful with a lot of nonsense here, but I would suggest that you just ignore anybody who starts that stuff. This should help you have a smoother reading experience, I'm sure you must have a busy life so doing is probably even more essential for you. Thanks and keep up the great work.

You mentioned this in one of the threads in the past and I'm really happy with the new direction. It's also really good to see MS steering the division back on the right path. They'll need it going into next gen.

Yes, the GamesIndustry.biz article is misleading, and it's OK to point that out.

I mean, I literally have seen consumer data that the driving factor of their purchase was Game Pass. I'm really not exaggerating that.

Phil and the Xbox team have done a really good job of expanding on, and marketing the services that Xbox offers now. You are seeing an up tick in consumers that own PS4s as their primary console also picking up Xbox Ones due to the value proposition Game Pass offers.

I'm not going to go out and say Game Pass alone is the primary driving factor, it isn't, but it is contributing to the consoles growth this year
