We are talking about growth. PS4 has led the market, it's called out every month.

But it's not a growth driver this year. Not spin, facts.

I'm just replying to a poster who said the "Games Industry article doesn't even bother to inform it's still the best selling console in the US in 2018" in a story that's literally a report on the first half of 2018. Now if what he said is not true perhaps you should take it up with him.

It's called "spin," and as we can see it's not just for politics.
Um, it isn't "spin" when it's a fact. It's had strong growth YoY. Not sure why that classifies as spin. No one is saying PS4 isn't the leader...is just hasn't had as much "growth" on its numbers compared to last year. That isn't really a bad thing either, mind you lol..

The real takeaway here is that if only one of the >$100 platforms has experienced very strong growth and yet it has never led an individual month, while total hardware spending is at a 7 year high, that everything hardware must be doing pretty darn remarkably well.

Actually "spin" is exactly what you can do with facts. Not saying that's the case here, but implying that because you're stating facts you can't be "spinning" the facts shows a lack of knowledge on what spin is. Spin is taking facts, and spinning them to fit your narrative, often times while ignoring other facts.

Facts and spin go hand in hand my friend.

Do you foresee any price drops to $199?

Xbox One had the strongest growth, but lowest sales in 2018. Doesn't that simply indicate that Xbox One had a very slow first half of 2017, possibly due to buyers holding off for the launch of Xbox One X?

If anyone has questions I'll be happy to answer what I can. Will be back in a couple hours and respond.

The press release offers more detail, but yeah the Xbox One and SNES Classics are pointed out for growth. PS4 is the best selling hardware platform of the year. A bit lost in translation.
Is Detroit doing great? how is the sales compared to Heavy Rain.

NPD isn't going to be negative to any console. It's not their job, and they probably don't want to do that.

Will be interesting to see if Far Cry and GOW manage to stay in the list by the end of the year, considering there are so many big hits coming up

Far cry probably will at maybe 8-10. But it all depends on how well Pokemon and smash sell. Also there could be a resurgence of other Nintendo software like Mario and Zelda during the holidays

Since launch of the Xbox One...or launch of the Xbox?
Sorry Xbox One launch not counting 2013 obviously. 2017 would have been much worse without the X but that helped it in the holidays come at least close to their second worst year. Still it's important information when reporting growth I think. I'd be more interested in how it's doing compared to other years rather than last year.

Console wars are bad for the brain

This kind of stuff is the reason I've been considering stopping posting on the forum sometime in the near future. The level of discourse has gotten extremely rough. I'm trying to hold out but idk if it's worth it really

On topic it's been a tremendous year so far for the industry in 2018. Hardware growth has been great to see, particularly from the Xbox One. People really take for granted how special and important it is we have 3 VERY healthy platforms right now all offering different experiences an strategies. Its why cross console ownership is so high, because all 3 platforms offer a unique spin on the industry.

Also in terms of software it's nice to see surprise over performances from games such as Monster Hunter World and DBZ Fighterz. Of course your mainstays such as GTAV and COD are there but it's always great to see games over perform expectations and shake up the industry

PS4 overall best selling machine. Spidey and Rdr 2 will ensure that would remain true for the rest of the year.

The consternation around one positive note on high YoY growth rate sure is something.

The ongoing health of the console space is excellent. We're seeing a viable market for three major platforms, the same generation there were questions about sustaining two at the start.

Relax guys, the PS4 is still in the lead. Saying something positive about Xbox growth isn't going to threaten that. So much passive aggressiveness in this thread it's silly.

Good to see Xbox doing better. I invest in all three platforms I like seeing things going well for all involved. It's only good news for this industry.

That means that XOne performed strong relatively to last year, but sales are probably still below PS4 and Switch? The op is worded a bit ambiguous.
PS4 sales are way ahead XB1... close to twice more.

Yeah but we're talking $ growth aren't we? Deals don't explain that.
Of course it explain... part of the $ growth is due X but part is because the deals like MS is selling 150k consoles per month at $250 instead $100k consoles per month at $300 like last year... selling more at lower price generates more $ in most cases.

MS is selling more XB1 S this year than last year due the lower price... add the additional X sales (not present last year) and you will have the % growth they had this year.

You do you of course, just remember that there's more people appreciating the info you (and others) proved than people who have to engage in console warring. Well, at least I hope so.

Don't leave Benji! You and a few other peeps make this stuff an actual discussion instead of "Well obviously my e-peen is bigger I bought the PS4! THE SALES WINRAR!"

I could also raise the level of discourse by making a few KY jelly jokes... but I'll admit it's been a few years since I wore the assless chaps necessary for the mindset.

See?

Without peeps actually looking at a healthy industry and going "Everyone wins!" It'd be a thread of such and such games will make my platform of choice the winner!

There is no spin as far as the NPD report is concerned of course, however it is beyond my comprehension that you can goes by the name of Games Industry and write an article about the market for the first half of 2018 without mentioning a single time that the PS4 and the Switch are actually the two best selling systems for the period. Full picture, anyone ?

Looking at the hardware part of the text, the situation is even more confusing since they talk about strong sales.

The NPD highlighted particularly strong sales for Xbox One as well as plug and play devices such as Nintendo's NES and SNES Classic Editions - something that has been a running trend in the firm's recent monthly reports.

So there it is, if you read this and are not a NPD thread lurker, you are probably thinking the Xbox One is the main driver of the US market this year, meanwhile the contributions of the PS4 and the Switch aren't worth talking apparently (the PS4 is only up by 4% if I recall correctly ?). Feel free to spread the headline on Twitter so you can be quoted by Aaron Greenberg !

Before this causes inevitable confusion for those who don't follow NPD threads, the Xbox One is mentioned because it has the strongest growth year on year following a dreadful 2017. However this doesn't mean the Xbox One is the "strongest performer" or that it is outpacing the PS4, which the Games Industry article doesn't even bother to inform it's still the best selling console in the US in 2018. While in progress compared to 2017, the Xbox One is also behind the Switch for the year.

If anyone reads this article casually without much knowledge of the trends, he can easily thinks that the PS4 has nothing to do with how great the market is doing right now. You can't just talk about the growth year on year without explaining the full picture.
It is right there in OP that PS4 is the best selling console.

That's a very good summary of the situation that puts it all into perspective in an easy to understand way. Hopefully people get it through their thick skulls that none of this is 'spin' or whatever.

Last year low numbers, X and bunch of deals this year.

Low numbers last year nor deals explain this. Growth is YoY so even if last year was very low there is a reason for that and a reason why this year is higher. Also deals don't explain $ growth, especially as there were many deals last year too.

I guess I'm curious if this is brand restoration at play or the X hardware. Or both. Or sea of thieves?

It's weird that 5 out of the 10 best selling games this year weren't released this year.
