Dunkin' Donuts is dropping "Donuts" from its name, and fans aren't happy about it.

The name change doesn't come as a surprise — the Massachusetts-based coffee empire began testing the name Dunkin' at a handful of Massachusetts locations late last year, according to Eater.

The Dunkin' concept is part of a major rebrand that includes a new store design, drinks like nitro infused cold brew, and digital kiosks to order at. The first Dunkin' concept was opened at a Quincy,Massachusetts, location. By the end of the year, the new concept will be at 30 locations in Boston and 20 nationwide.

The Dunkin' concept isn't necessarily a permanent change — while it will be rolling out to about 50 stores, Dunkin' Donuts said in a statement that it doesn't plan to make any decisions regarding the branding until later this year.

I'm sure a lot of people will start comparing this to when IHOP became IHOB to promote those burgers. Honestly, I know people who call it just Dunkin' already so *shrugs* if it's permanent, I wouldn't complain.

What about Double D's.

See it has two meanings. It could refer to doughnuts, but also boobs.

Get it?

I will never understand the weird Northeast obsession with Dunkin' Donuts. They make the worst coffee.

This was mentioned in a marketing textbook from a class I took in college 10 years ago.

Took them long enough.

I can't remember the last time hearing someone say Dunkin Donuts out loud. Most people around me here in Massachusetts casually call it Dunkins.

Chasing the illusive millennial crowd that are no longer spring chickens and have grown up liking Dunkin' Donuts as is. Everything doesn't need to be hip and fresh.

Reminds me of when Kentucky Fried Chicken formally rebranded to KFC. Not sure why the formal name and the nickname can't co-exist. Unless the "donut" moniker is some weird albatross at this point.

Huh. I'm from the Northeast and love their coffee. Drinking it right now, actually lol. Is Dunkin' Donuts not popular outside of the NE?
I think their coffee is fine (and not really any better than "fine"), but all of their food is horrible. And no, they aren't nearly as popular outside of the northeast. I live in Indianapolis and by my count, there are fewer than ten of them in Indianapolis proper (and just a handful more in the surrounding suburbs).

I always thought it was because Dunkin was harder to find in the Northeast or something. Here in the South, they're everywhere.

If you're in Boston, I think it's a city ordinance that if you're standing in front of a Dunkin' Donuts, you have to be able to see the next closest location. It's absurd.

Not far from where I live there are a couple of establishments that are only a couple of blocks from each other. One is new and has the Dunkin' branding, but the other is still just regular Dunkin' Donuts. I imagine the transition will take time.

"...and fans aren't happy about it."

Imagine being the type of human being who is emotionally affected by Dunkin fucking Donuts dropping the latter part of its name.

Just imagine.

"Fans aren't happy."

Is this true? Are there fans of a fucking chain of donut shops that give a shit about the name?

I don't know how to feel about the tea and coffee coming from a beer-style tap.

There was a point where Dunkin' Donuts was an actual chain of bakeries, but honestly it's felt like their donuts and pastries have been in the back seat of the business for a couple of decades.
