You forgot Fighting Force and Yuzo's 1st-person SoR4

I didn't include Fighting Force at the end it was released as it's own thing. I liked it at the time but haven't replayed since it came out.

What's this about Yuzo's first person SOR4? Are you talking about the Streets of Rage in the Condemned engine thing some Sega guy brought up in an interview once?

Plus, this was mostly based on the art design complaints, and how we could have gotten objectively worse.

Yuzo pitched a 3D SOR game for Dreamcast in the late '90s but Sega of America shot it down, apparently because the people they demoed it to thought nobody in America would remember or care about Streets of Rage.

I can't dig them up right now but there are a few short and grainy clips of that old pitch demo online.

Oh yeah that one, with the blocky looking Axel. I don't think that was first person.

I don't know if you could manually switch perspectives but there were definitely clips of the game that used a first-person perspective.

e: the clips are all here https://segaretro.org/Streets_of_Rage_4

It should also be mentioned that Ancient's own concept art from back then was considerably poppier than the stuff they were doing for the classic games:

Oh yeah, with Axel's son and whatever. I never had an issue with this one since the roughness of it is probably due to early stages of development but I would say I like the look of this SOR4 more.

For the peeps complaining about the artstyle, here's what failed SOR pitches looked like over the years.

Failed pitch from Backbone:

Failed pitch from Grin:

SORR3.jpg

Failed pitch from Bottle Rocket:

And the infamous Ruffian videos:

You can dislike the new art style, that's fine. But it sure as hell better than all other attempts over the years.

Awesome post

I wasn't as enamoured with The Dragon's Trap as others but I do like their character designs. Definitely looking forward to seeing more of this.

Hadn't seen all of this before. Wonder if Erie would have been Blaze's daughter? So that might be grown up Skate, and Axel's son is there.

I love watching Age and family line progression in games... since so many entertainment series don't take the idea seriously. I like that our Current SOR4 seems to be showing our main classics older, but still competent. But at the same time, an entry that could have shown their children and students would have also been great.

This right here is good content! <3

Thanks much! :D

The only thing that would get me interested in this is if they get Yuzo Koshiro. That music during the trailer was no fucking bueno.

The music probably is Yuzo Koshiro. There's no way he's gonna do the whole soundtrack in FM. His WMMT tracks have been consistently great, so I don't expect his hypothetical SoR4 soundtrack would be bad.

If the soundtrack for SoR4 is as good as that, I'll shut up about any complaints I have over the art style. I'm just imagining playing through a level using Max with that first track playing, and my hype has shot through the roof.

same. I am not a fan of the art style (even though I adored the Wonder Boy III remake's art) but I always felt SoR was one of those series more defined by its music style than art style, somehow.

if it has a poppin' YZ soundtrack then that would be bigger to me than a more faithful art style

Recently I caught that Dragon's Trap (apart from being the same devs) had a physical in stores for all platforms, so I assume this one will too - hopefully, so I can sell this off again if it's not living up to the series and stings.

So far it looks okay, despite being too bright. This is also a rare case in which I would prefer "yet another" pixel-looking game, because Sonic Mania was one of the few games that actually felt like a 90s Saturn 2D game. So I can only imagine what they would have done with Streets of Rage Mania.

Yeah, I can understand people having reservations about it being the right approach for a game calling itself Streets of Rage 4 but taken purely on its own merits, it looks great.

for me it's just that if you remove the recognizable sprites, I would never look at those screenshots and think "Wow that looks like it could be a new Streets of Rage game!" the way I could with WB3.

that dirty, grimy, 80s city/alley/place-I-wouldn't-want-to-be-after-dark vibe isn't there.

that and the large characters feel flat somehow... a poster added highlights to the characters a few pages back, I thought that made a pretty big difference.

I'm saying this more as constructive criticism because the game is still a work in progress

About that, I was thinking that the first SOR was taking place entirely during the night, when in the second it was for like half of the game. But the third game made you play almost entirely in the daytime.

I hope that this fourth installment will allow us to return to the night once again, because I think it's part of the DNA of the serie, you know the night with the neons and the groovy music.

Big Ben letting out the Big Fart

and when people talk about gritty/dark, they must mean the first one. The second one has a much brighter aesthetic overall, with arcades and robot fatories and baseball stadiums and giant office buildings

Anyone familiar with Streets of Fury (apparently the only thing Guard Crush Games has done)?
Found some rather poor reviews but steam users seem quite positive. I'm even more worried now, the artstyle is one thing but if the mechanics are shit too..

It's fun IMO. Deliberately cheesy, and it gets a bit repetitive, but it knows what it is and does a pretty good job of it. I wouldn't want SoR4 to play just like Streets of Fury, but I think that Streets of Fury shows that the developers know what they're doing mechanically.

It plays nothing lie SoR, but for what it is, it's great

Game feel is always a weird thing to describe, but this game just feels good to control and play

It is super fun and the FMV style sprites are hilarious

Also the combo system is surprisingly depth

Or unsurprisingly since you can literally play as some FGC pro players =P

As much as I love Trance(those are basically Trance tracks) I dunno if it fits in SoR.

Edit: also I'm surprised to hear Trance tracks in a game OST lol gonna have to research more stuff from this racing game series.
I'm expecting lots of hiphop break beats and 80's synths. Maybe some FM. Not much trancey moments. But still proper bangers.

As long as this game does not have any RPG or block button nonsense it should be pretty sick. I have confidence it will turn out a good deal better than Streets of Rage 3 at least.

Also, some fantastic fanart for this game already showing up!

I think it's actually more that Genesis games look kind of dark and in general. Colors are more muted and darker than on, say, the SNES. This is most obvious when comparing either games that released on both, or games in the same series (Contra or Castlevania for example). Even daylight scenes like the one above look darker and more muted than something on the SNES or using a modern palette.

Obviously, this works well for games that are gritty in nature, like brawlers, but trying to emulate it nowadays would make for relatively bland visuals.

Tone and art seem way off. And I hope the music in the trailer isnt anywhere close to being representative.
