So Hard difficulty is the way to go then on this?

As someone alluded to previously, I think all Square-Enix would have to do to market this to Millenials is launch an ad that says "From acclaimed producer director so and so... ...and the artist behind Dragon Ball Z comes DRAGON QUEST XI"

And enough people who casually grew up on Japanese culture and Toonami in the 90s would be all over this.

Might blow your mind that a lot of people would consider it valuable to hear the opinion of someone new to the franchise.

New to the franchise yet also a self-styled RPG Afficionado who has somehow never touched the grandfather series of JRPG's feels like an oxymoron.

A lot of his complaints aren't really relevant to new-new players because they wouldn't be endlessly comparing it to some enormous unspoken catalogue of games from the same genre.

Yup, unless you mute the music. Square Enix is fine with the gameplay footage being shown. It's just the composer that's stuck in the past in terms of copyright issues (and is a bigot on top of that).

So you can turn off the music? that'll be good, I can route the audio into my mixer with spotify or something while I play then.

And yeah finally watched the kotaku video, easily my favorite video review this year.

Any reviewer played the PC version? I pre-ordered the game on steam, and IIRC SE said that they were putting effort into this port to avoid another Nier situation, but we lack the system requirements only a week from release and I'm not sure that the game will be day one on PC...

I don't understand your point. It's his opinion. You don't need to agree with him. Why would you assume how other people think, and thus how relevant his opinions are?

Don't like what he says, then just move on. Really not worth getting worked up over.

What gave you that idea? Voice acting isn't an afterthought and is really well done.
I think he means its an afterthought in that it wasnt even included in the JP release so voice acting is, quite literaly, an afterthought added for the western release more than a year after its initial launch.

Regardless if its done well or bad it still is, to me, an afterthought like, literally. But Im glad they did it.

He says as much at the end. It's a big point in the review, actually.
That's part of what confuses me.

DQ XI on normal difficulty isn't that hard, but a first time player managing to finish it in 40 hours while also fitting in what was apparently a ton of grinding is weird. He does mention that's he's a "golden path" type of player and it sounds like he didn't dive into any of the post-credits content, but that's pretty quick based on completion times I've seen of the Japanese version.

To be clear, I'm not trying to discredit his review, was merely surprised to read that. This is all subjective and no doubt a super traditional JRPG isn't going to appeal to everyone. And if he wasn't having a good time then it makes sense he wouldn't do any of the post-game stuff (but shit some of that is so so good).

Traditional JRPGs over the last few years have also scored very highly, especially when they've been very well made, which DQ always is
You could see it as sort of a sad commentary on Dragon Quest's mind share in the West that people are surprised. It's been a consistently good-to-great series for a long, long time now.

I guess there's also the 14 year gap between this and the last mainline single-player DQ game on consoles. Crazy to think I was just starting high school when VIII came out lmao

No PC codes sent out? That's fucked up & frightening. I guess that guarantees there will at least be something wrong with it.

I'd rephrase voice acting as part of the Western localization. Maybe I am generalizing, but Japanese fans don't seem to care or demand VA (VIII on PS2 also did not have it). Western DQ fans, especially after VIII's great voice acting, were expecting it.

Woah. Didn't expect this to review so well for some reason. Thought it would've got hit hard for being traditional, glad to be wrong!

Might pick this up eventually. Not played a DQ before but love me a good JRPG.

Correct me if Im wrong but this is the first time a mainline DQ game launches on PC? Also this PC version is brand new made for the west right? In Japan it never came out on PC; just 3DS and PS4, yes?

That Tim Rogers review (both video and written) were of epic proportions. LOL Tuesday can't come soon enough! It's all I'm going to be playing for the foreseeable future. I know why some folks are protesting and boycotting, but there's no way I'm not supporting the collective efforts of the team that made this game a reality.

Kotaku review is amazing. Is this a common occurrence? I had no idea Kotaku had video reviews like this.
