The only problem I have with this is that it's too close to launch. Weird decision on Sony/Insomniac part to release them in such a crowded period. Maybe they're trying to keep the game alive? I got my digital deluxe edition a few weeks ago but the timing is a bit odd.

I'm just waiting for the year that everyone finally realizes that DLC plans are made alongside the development of the base game. We've known this as a common thing for nearly 10 years now and still hear these complaints for a lot of games. For a site that prides itself on following the industry, a lot of people are still surprisingly clueless to how things work.

Honest question: How much of the DLC do you really think is done at this point?

Sure, the voice work is almost certainly done (so they don't have to call the actors back in), and character models for people like Black Cat, sure.

But the main game went gold almost a month ago. That leaves 3 full months to work on the first DLC, though they're probably working on all 3 DLCs simultaneously, with more work being put into the one that releases first obviously.
They have an exclusive team for DLC stuff. So I think making the DLC wasn't necessarily related to making the main game. But I might be wrong.

When you really think about it though what is a better time to capitalize on a well received game?

TW3's free DLC for the most part is just minor. A couple quests and then costumes, hairstyles and New Game+. They're certainly nice, but the meaty story content for TW3 was sold separately as DLC.

So... exactly what I said? TW3's only charged for DLC when they had around 60 hours of new content (that in one case actually included a new map with new assets and graphic features not present on the initially released engine)

TW3's free DLC was 5 Story missions, cosmetics, animations, & new modes... that actually looks eerily similar to the description of this Spider-Man paid DLC. I'd love to see how long each of this 3 Spider-Man DLC missions are...

I'm not sure why a bunch of guys are downplaying it and antagonizing the many of us that dislike this practice.

I know I'll love the game, I'll plat it, it will be an >85 metacritic darling, it will sell millions, but it's ok to be a fan of the game & criticize some of the dev practices we consider shady as well, it doesn't have to be either great or atrocious.

The game already seems on the low side for an open world game when it comes to main story content, and having extra story missions (pretty much ready when the game releases) and charging for them seems like double dipping on wallets to me, not a practice I like.
I may delay it and get the full version when I can get the whole thing for $60.

Nice info. I'm getting the digital deluxe with all these 3 DLC chapters included. It's dope that we get a content drop each month for the first 3 months after release.

The game is 20 hours long without doing most any side content. Even people playing on easy making a bee line for the ending and skipping every single cutscene and ignoring all side content beat the game in 12 hours. Its not what I'd call short or lacking in content for the main campaign.

And if they did, how many of those same people would be saying "this game came out a year ago why are they barely releasing dlc now!?!"?

Exactly this. Ya'll aren't gonna care about the DLC if the first bit of it happens eight months after the game comes out. You'll be playing something else.

My post was sarcasm. I've updated it for clarification.

lol my bad man. Some people are serious in here.

Most people don't come back for those small DLCs if they release too long after launch. Getting a DLC a month after for 3 months is great and will keep me coming back to the game.

Some people still operate like the industry is still in 2003 and everything that deviates from that is just scummy and greedy.

My ice cold take is that DLC is better the closer it is to the game's release. It's almost impossible for me to come back to a game months later for less than 10 hours of content.

Can the OP please append the dev's comments or we'll be chasing our own tails for the next dozen pages or so.

I love how we have a developer, come into this thread, explain clearly the reasoning for this... And then people ignore it and just continue to post ignorant hot takes. Like come on people.

I guess people are desperate to cast a negative light on Spiderman. Love how people seem to have a better insight on game development than an actual dev.

Had it been an expansion akin to Witcher 3's or Horizon I'd say it sound more enticing this just reeks of the usual AAA shenanigans.

If those DLC's had released a month after the game came out we'd still be hearing the same "cut content" nonsense. Apparently there is some arbitrary cut off point where something becomes original material and not cut content.

I don't take it as a hot take. I would, I generally take quite a time finishing and enjoying the game. Getting bored after playing for months...is kinda odd to me.

It's also funny that people take this kinda of criticism as if its a way to negativate the game. I feel pity for them.

The vanilla game is already made, this DLC was always going to be a DLC. Cut Content implies that it was going to be put in the game, but they later decided to remove it.
Its coming out so soon after release, it could easily be cut content so they can include it on the season pass, its not as if they will ever admit to it being cut content. They could have delayed the game another month and included the content in the actual game, but nope

Between the DBFZ "lootbox" thread (that ended up being false), the Sekiro microtransactions (deconfirmed by the developer afterwards), the Jim Sterling fighting games thread and now this one, wow, how do you guys manage to find time for all these outrages?

So if the DLC is close to release its cut content but if its farther away its suddenly not? What is the thinking behind this aside from pure speculation based on nothing but the date of release?

Or...OR! People like you can just wait until price drops or whatever you do when a game has DLC and let the millions (and MILLIONS) of people that want the game september 7th buy it day and date.

There is a very clear rationale behind this.

-Trying to prevent people from selling the game back to Gamestop after finishing it.

-Trying to maximize purchases of the DLC by putting it out when the game is still hot and on peoples minds.
