Sounds like you can (optionally) up the difficulty if you want to. So that's good.
Just to be clear, you can only up the difficulty through restrictive toggles, and you can only do this before you start the game. If you start playing the game and find it too easy, there's nothing you can do about that.

Won't have a chance to read any of these until later but scores are better that I expected

4, 5 and 6 are considered like the holy trinity of DQ, right?

True of FF too really.

Gotcha. You can turn it down (once?) can't you? So could start with it on and then adjust it down if it's too punishing? Shame you can't whack it up while playing.

As someone who played a good chunk of the Japanese version and played the English one for review, I can't recommend the 'hard' difficulty enough. Under the 'draconian quest' modifiers you can select for all enemies to be much stronger. This is the only draconian quest feature I found to be really engaging in the way in changes up the game. I thought the JP ver. was too easy and kind of unsatisfying mechanics-wise because of it. With this enemy buff though a lot of the bosses really push you to the edge and forced me to explore the systems more thoroughly. Even an enemy encounter that suddenly spawns a bunch of enemies on you can be a very serious threat. If you like a bit of challenge (something I find important to remain engaged in a 100 hour game) important then definitely try it out. You can disable it whenever (but not enable it again on that save).

Thank you very much.

This was the one question I was looking for it all of the reviews.

I like a good challenge, but I don't want to play something stressful. I want something similar to DQ3/4 in terms of challenge.

What's consdiered the best DQ to play before this?

I would usually say VIII but it sounds like its similar enough to XI that you might as well just play XI and not risk any burnout. Still, the 3DS version of VIII is mostly great. IV is also good and relatively short compared to some of the other series highlights.

That's good to hear! I'm not playing the game in high difficulties (draconian quest is a difficulty mode?), mostly because I want to finish it quickly and what I've seen from the combat seems pretty basic (after BD, OT , RH:PC or other modern turn-based combat JRPG I think that DQ will be less exciting, the combat doesn't seem to have anything really unique).

Draconian quest is a mode that allows for extra modifiers in your game, including making enemies more difficult. With this setting enabled, I found it to be more challenging and engaging in terms of mechanics when compared to OT for example. There is a lot of hidden depth in the game that the extra difficulty brings out. During some boss battles I was at the edge of my seat, it can be that good.

Sounds exciting. You still lose pretty much nothing if you wipe out, right? Keep all the exp and items you've gotten, etc. Always liked that even with failed dungeon runs in DQ, you've made at least a tiny bit of character progress.

God im so fucking pumped and so pissed at Square-Enix for being eternally incompetent with their handling of this amazing series.

Definitely double dipping when switch version comes out.

I'm actually a bit unclear on this to be honest because there are more options now. I think you get to keep xp and items if you wipe out and return to the last save statue you saved at, but you lose half your money. But I'd always choose for the ' return to last autosave' option, which does delete whatever xp and items you earned, but doesn't take your money. I don't care about the money, but the game autosaves pretty frequently, so I barely lost any progress.

The best dragon quest overall is 7, play it on PS1 if you can, 3DS otherwise.

The best for newcomers is 8, since the visual style is more....modern.

Haven't played a DQ game since VIII. Does this still have that archaic save system where you have to go to a church and have to go through multiple lines of dialog just to save your game?

Bit of a specific question about turning off voices, but can anyone comment on whether this also includes the characters' sound effects (grunts and whatnot) and dialogue, during combat? Thanks in advance, to anyone who could provide the info.

The main issue is it's completely at odds with the presentation and the look of the game. A MIDI soundtrack in the 3DS version of DQ11 would have been completely acceptable, but it just doesn't gel at all with what the game looks and feels like on the PS4.
I don't think presentation and music are related imo... I would love to play a PS4 presentation game with DQIII or DQV MIDI musics.

That could be a perfect fit.

FFVI MIDIs are pretty awesome too.

So 900p/30fps on PS4 and 1728p(cb)/30fps on Pro for the Japanese release.

Assume the western release is the same?

So glad square enix is keeping this series quality so consistent over the years. Great job!

Wow, that's good. Of course I expect DQ11 to be great, but I didn't expect reviews to be so favorable for it.
