Moon Moon is incredible.

Seriously though, ZZ gets really, really fantastic just a few episodes after this, so try to push through it.
Taking seriously most of what happens in the first 20-25 episodes of ZZ is an error. The rest are slightly more conventional.

I definitely plan to. I was sold on the comedy when Mashmyre started praying to Haman. This arc was a brutal endeavor however.

ZZ 15

Leina remains captive; this is worrying. Tell me she doesn't die horribly in a few episodes to signify the shows tone shift. :(

I like the way they parodize
Pokemon GO with bacteria lol
, and I lost my shit when they detects Olivia's armpit. That Sugoroku part also was amazing, too. Solid episode.

I lol'd at the half way to the end until at the ending.

AoT Season 3 - 6

Oh so that what they were talking about this torture "device", I see. And I can't wait for some action next week~!

So she murdered Connie's parents right?

I don't think this is a good show, but it's entertaining.

Hyouka
I remember that in the old site the occasional debate whether Hyouka was good or shit would flare out. Well, I finally decided to check it out to see what the deal is about. After finishing this, I stand by the opinion that this show is good. Not just good, I think it is excellent. It is important to look beyond the mundane premise of the show and the mystery, and look at what each mystery tells you about the characters involved in them. And hey, sometimes the mystery itself is actually really good. I do think the setup for two of the arcs were too long, but those had really satisfying conclusion to them. The ending of the show is really milquetoast, as it felt like it was just another episode, so there is no closure at all, so that part is disappointing. But overall, it is definitely a great show.

Rat episode was okay.

I also love the design of ghost girl. I watched one episode of JoJo randomly a while ago and it was the one where Kira was fully introduced, I do have some idea about what he is all about. Nice to see it's moving towards him.

Gotta say, I'm really not liking how this thread is basically open spoilers for literally everything. I can't often watch anime as soon as it airs and that basically means I can't ever enter this thread until I'm completely caught up for fear of getting spoiled on something. I would have been really, really pissed reading all the Revue Starlight impressions this week if I had happened to see them before I got a chance to see the episode.

No clue outside of the fact that #25 appeared during the credits of this episode and the original run was only slated for 24.

Some quick napkin math I posted in P5A's OT:

Is there an announced episode count? Of the 12 announced Blu-ray releases in Japan we know the episode counts to 8 of them:

2/3/3/3/2/2/3/3

Which puts the episode count at 29 at a minimum, and that's if every remaining volume only contains two episodes.

This is particularly problematic for Revue Starlight, which airs on Thursdays but the official "simulcast" isn't until Saturday. That's literally half a week of time I have to stay away from the thread, every week. It's easier to just not bother at all, and if enough people are of a similar mindset then that just isn't good for discussion at all.

It's 2 days. Not half a week. I don't watch the show you're talking about but surely waiting 2 days before joining the discussion isn't that bad? I'm currently watching One Piece, posting my thoughts in the OT and inadvertently getting spoiled every single time. It really doesn't bother me, though because people still enjoy hearing the thoughts of others, even if they are... 500+? episodes behind.

Attack on Titan is so poorly written. There's no world-building or room given for the viewer and characters to breathe. Just jumping from character to character, with twist after twist dropped with little to no build up, and no sense of the layout of the places things happen in.

It's a post-apocalyptic battle fantasy trying to be a political thriller and failing miserably.

Plus, the plot devices of certain individuals having absolute control over the Titans, and others having absolute control over memories, is just lazy writing that allows for any retcon or contrived scenario to happen.

F91-
IqtkML3l.jpg

I keep forgetting that at some point in time, Tomino actually was good. F91 was an aborted Gundam TV series that later became juryrigged into one movie that it seems the staff were intent on following up but never happened, at least in anime format. The 2 hour movie covers what was supposed to be the first 13 episodes and you can tell as the movie starts to unravel after the initial colony invasion. It's a shame as there is a ton to like with the movie and in a slightly extended format, this could have easily been one of the stronger Gundam entries. The Frontier IV colony invasion is really remarkable as it might be the most brutal depiction of collateral damage in the entire Gundam franchise. There have of course been bigger atrocities in the Gundam universe such as Operation British (Australian colony drop) but using a civilian's viewpoint here gives a much more personal and brutal feeling than other massacres.
For example in the above scene, a shell from a mobile suit's gun falls and hits a mother in the head instantly killing her. The main characters for the most part aren't trying to fight back in this sequence but literally survive by trying to find a working shelter. The people who actually do fight back in some capacity get killed. The invasion uses a lot of upwards angled camera shots to emphasize the scale of the mobile suits and a number of sequences focused on the environmental damage such as when a mobile suit crashes into a building.
The intro has a number of children crying because either their parents are missing or dead. War in the Pocket is considered the hallmark for the depiction of how war ruins lives but in many respects this intro, and movie as a whole, does a better job than 0080 does. One of the Federation officers straight up talks about using children as shields.
Unfortunately the rest of the movie isn't to this caliber as the condensing becomes more and more obvious. Scenes jump around in time and location that, while aren't impossible to follow, are needlessly hard. For example, Seabook goes from protecting a base to being far away and spying around back in his home town literally a cut later. The movie needs a little more connective tissue. What I did like was the focus on Cecilia and her development as a character (up to the last segment which is again missing some necessary character work).
Cecilia has her own goals in mind and I liked how she wasn't dependent on a man for most of the movie. Of course Tomino being Tomino there is another women who betrays the Crossbone Vanguard over a man which is a big disappointment with how well Cecilia is handled, again for the most part. The biggest problem with Cecilia's character is near the end when she leaves Crossbone as it had been leading up to her siding with Crossbone and then quickly transitions to her leaving. It feels like there needed to have been some trigger or event to justify her switching sides or just lay the groundwork to express her doubts. There was the event with her mother coming back and her stepfather getting killed but I don't think it's strong enough.
I liked a number of the side characters on both sides with two notable exceptions, Iron Mask and that asshole Federation officer on the ship/base who was doing his best Bright Slap impression. Iron Mask as a whole was woefully underdeveloped in terms of his ideological bent and comes off as a Char redux. I did initially like him having personal reasons for wearing the mask, even though they were a bit weak, but I'm not sure I like that he never took it off at certain crucial junctures. I feel one big demasking moment in an emotionally driven scene could have helped his character a bit. The Bug plan of his is interesting from both an in-universe perspective but also from Tomino's. In-universe having the systemic killing of people wholesale is relevant as it takes mental pressure away from the people actually doing the killing, similar to modern unmanned drones. Then there is Tomino who wanted a more visceral feeling to impart on viewers than previous mass murders such as with the G3 gas on Colony 30, although that was pretty gruesome. So the visual depiction is fascinating, especially with the large number of shots of families being killed. I just wish Iron Mask's reasoning for killing most of humanity was stronger.
Visually the movie is gorgeous. There are a number of detailed backgrounds and the mecha animation especially in the intro can be a bit breathtaking. One area I was impressed with was the character designs as there was a focus on multi-nationality. One of the prominent children is clearly Asian. It's really nice when you see diversity in the character designs. Now the music on the other hand is a different story. Parts of the music were clearly ripped off from the Imperial March in Star Wars. Then the rest is largely forgettable besides the vocal insert and credit music.
All in all, I really enjoyed the movie despite its number of flaws. With a little sprucing up, this could have been something special due to great aspects like the focus on family but alas. Crossbone anime when?

The movie needs a little more connective tissue.
"A little" is a bit of an understatement. I think I've watched the movie twice believing that the second time I would be able to better piece some things together. This is something that actually works in Char's Counterattack where things are not entirely clear the first time but make sense on re-watch. However, in F91 there was a lot that it still happened with no rhyme or reason and it clearly shows that it was never supposed to be a film. As you said, the parts that reuse the work that was already done for the episodes is mostly OK if a bit rushed for compression's sake. The later parts are an incomprehensible string of "Why would that character do that?" questions. I might be remembering this wrong (F91 is kind of a blur to me) but I think there were some dudes that changed sides (as in factions, not as in colony groups) in a single cut with hardly or no explanation whatsoever.

The feeling I got from F91 is similar to playing the European version of Ace Combat 3 Electrosphere. Things happen, stuff explodes but it hardly ever makes sense why a faction does anything or what are the reasons for anyone being aligned with who they are.

Tomino's creations after CCA seem to follow the pattern of "This is very pretty to look at and there's a couple of interesting characters but it is shit to actually follow." I'm looking at you Reconguista while Overman King Gainer gets an honorable mention.

Any good anime with a similar tone and plot to A Silent Voice, Anohana and Orange?

Well there is the Anthem of the Heart which I really wouldn't recommend since at pivotal points it's Okada at its worst but since you want more of Anohana ... Deals with main character that can't talk.

+ for 3 Gatsu

Outlaw Star 01-04

"You just lied to me, betrayed and literally shot me in the chest 5 minutes ago and are trafficking a naked teenager in a suitcase, but water under the bridge, I will indeed go to the ends of space with you."

Pretty unusual to see this whole set up take all 4 eps, I almost started to believe Hilda won't bite the obligatory mentor character bullet but alas ...

Similar tone but not the same plot at all: Honey and Clover and 3 Gatsu no Lion

Edit: i adore both these shows and it's sad to see how Honey and Clover is almost never mentioned anywhere.

The voice-visual gimmicks look nice but they often feel jarring and fall flat because they're used a bit incessantly. This is kind of the same problem I had with Nichijou but at least that's a sakuga showcase.

Hanebado 9-

I love the music, animation, and even the damn premise.

Without reading the manga, I can't help but feel like the anime director is still unsure of how to communicate the story to us in a limited amount of time, and thus show can't hold onto a damn tone.

And it doesn't juggle opposing tones well like some Japanese storytelling media do, but rather feels jarring, and almost like a different show each episode.

It's weird that I still have no grasp on what the actual plot arc is for this season, but I know it's definitely not a situational/slice of life sort of thing.

That being said, I still am enjoying it, though it's quickly going from being the summer breakout to merely a guilty pleasure.

Ayano being evil is great though. Maybe it didn't need to look so dramatic, though.

I just want this show to be good.

Ehhh, Admittedly a lot of Hanebado's bad was/is so bad it's actually great but the show has shown a number of times it has some good moments script wise and is more than capable of wrapping them in some very competent production and direction. I would gladly take that over Ayano having 3 crazy wackos going after her and going a bit nutty herself in the process.

AoT 42-43

This whole arc is much dumber than I remember and the political angle itself feels so undercooked. You have to wonder how those people kept the power in their hands for so long when they fell to so haphazard a coup. Though I think manga had more stuff devoted to it no ?

Almost done with a rewatch of Infinite Ryvius - going so much faster after I stopped trying to sync schedules with the roommate. This definitely feels very much like a product of a different time; a modern production of this show would probably try to smash everything into a single cour and the pacing would still be slower than average for what comes out these days.

Yama no Susume Third Season - 9

Those were some lovely mountain climbs, tainted only by the constant nagging awareness on both sides of someone important missing.

No Hinata, you don't get to act all pensively wistful, this is all entirely your fault. Now Aoi please hug Hinata already.

Just how much of a bitch is this mother?

…Enough of a bitch that she uses a firm called

And it suits her to a tee.

I guess I can't paint the mother as the only villain in this scenario, because Creepy Green Woman did basically steal her husband and that was kind of a dick move… But still. She sure is making a really strong case for everyone to hate her guts.

Laughing Under the Clouds Gaiden 1

Really awesome to see in the theater especially with the sound, nothing truly mindblowing or enough to really make the anime seem that much more than it would have appeared on the tv show...but the sound and music was great. Also it was so emotional that I teared up so much, the writer really does family bonds and brotherly connections so good even if it was 75% in the past. Tenka is the best brother ever and all that responsibility he had to endure just for his brothers. I loved the one mission they did with the Yamainu to show how the father was so epic and also how we got to see little Takeda back in the day was sweet. (So cant wait for the Finale since he and Soramaru will be in the lead roles, its gonna be so good)).

A prequel of just the Yamainu in the early days could have been great.

Overall really awesome of the movies and just plain emotional, cried so hard with the Yamainu and Tenka at the grave and everyone pouring out their feelings and final last words. Ah.

Laughing Under the Clouds Gaiden 2

Surprised people who didnt see the show went to see this one as I think its full impact was only full felt by tv viewers as the background for Shiraisu was really well done here and oh so emotional. Though I think the main event of the action here was really held back by how blatantly obviously bad they made the clan leader (even the way he looks). It really excelled on the family connections and just breaking the mold to go beyond your duty and seek out your dream, especially for the envious brother locked away in the ground while making tools for his brother who is free to be a ninja. Could always feel so bad in scenes where he'd complain about whats going on outside to a brother who just wanted to go outside was not right.

But beyond that really awesome all around and such a different take of ninjas versus the more "believe it, Im gonna be hokage" of Naruto. Teared up and cried in this one as well.

Really awesome movie experience.

So there has been a lack of edgy garbage this season and I am itching for that.

Is Kings Game good for that or is it too painful to watch?

For the record, the last edgy trash I watched and liked was Killing Bites so if it is close to it then I am willing to watch it.

King's Game is so trashy that its hard to put into words how trashy it is, and how hilarious it as a result. Most people use Another as the benchmark for so utterly ridiculous that its great since its basically the anime version of Final Destination. King's Game in my opinion is even more absurd, though maybe still not quite as funny, but it will still make you laugh when you're supposed to be 100% serious.

Moving on from that.

Finished Samurai Champloo yesterday. Man, that ending is hella anticlimactic, but still enjoyed the show a lot.

Also started watching this little sugary shoujo Emma: Victorian Romance and ended up liking it quite a lot, even though the style is a bit too ugly for my taste. Thinking of watching Genji Monogatari Sennenki and Paranoia Agent next, and also finish Ayakashi (had a fridge horror moment when I found out the chapter I watched was about the most famous Japanese onryo taken REALLY seriously IRL).

Anime movies: Flavours of Youth is quite bad. Makoto Shinkai visual identity without much of a soul, and a bit boring. Watched Akira for the first time too - nothing to be said here! Btw, is Begonia & Big Fish any good?

If possible I also would like some recommendations of good (if it's pretty, even better), 80's/90's anime, not too long, more on the seinen/josei side.
