I think richter was an exception because of being simon's echo, and "who is an echo of who?". The other three echoes so far weren't echoes of newcomers. Doesn't have to do with tier of popularity.

Just change her animations to make her look clumsy. So instead of looking evil dropping the bowling ball on someone's head, it looks like an accident.
I was watching the old E3 DLC direct for Smash 4 (the one that had Ryu) and I noticed Sakurai said they can't add too many more stages after Dreamland, Peach's Castle, Hyrule Castle and Miiverse

I don't think Sakurai's idea of "too many more" is really that low when you look at it.

Well, that's 6 more. So maybe that could equate to 6 unique newcomers.
Yes, that I'm aware of. But character wise I just didn't feel like he/she was as mega popular or iconic as Nintendo's biggest characters.
Villager kind of does that with its dropping flower pot move. Isabelle doing Balloon Fighter is the move that's just too far for her imo.

I've seen Dark Samus being brought up a lot, and I do mean a LOT, as the alternative to Ridley since he had been considered as being too big (ignoring the meme-ification of that argument here).
A lot of people even in pre-Brawl days have argued that Metroid should get a second character, and that the alternative to Ridley would be Dark Samus. That was when the Prime games still were recent, even, and Dark Samus' reputation as "the other character that could be included if Ridley isn't playable" held until even before the E3 presentation of Ultimate.
Dark Samus got a lot of steam on the speculation train once it was revealed that her AT and the Samus palette swap were missing combined with the Echoes concept, but she'd been brought up on the regular even going back to the late 2000s.
That's the one that draws the line? That would look cute with her floating around.
And sakurai said she got in just on the ballot.
Yea, Dark Samus has always been brought up as a "well, we can't have Ridley, but we want a new Metroid character, so pick Dark Samus!"
Also just as an aside, saying which characters are "important" won't matter when we're talking about a game deciding characters based on fanservice. The definition of what's important changes when the ballot is in play and it isn't about how many popular games a character starred in.
I hope one day we get to see the ballot. Maybe 20 years from now Sakurai can tell us.
The pose and flapping animation would look more awkward than cute I think.
I guess there is also the axe, but let's face it. If Isabelle gets in as echo, we are so going to get Axe murderer Isabelle fanart with smiling Villager as her partner.
It kind of seems like a lot of people here will be baffled if dixie shows up on screen when sakurai is showing off more echoes.
I think that also played into her hand in the ballot. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people who would've regularly voted for Ridley went on to go for Dark Samus instead since Ridley was already the focal point of Pyrosphere.
To be fair, there is already cutsey fanart of ridley playing around with pichu, so would kind of be the anti ridley.
Depending on his role in MP4, Sylux could possibly be a major contender for DLC.
It's kind of ironic he was brought up before knowing he would be the villain of prime 4.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Sylux was the character for those who lacked the moral courage to believe in Ridley.
He could be a character in Smash U. Tanabe pretty much will have him in a big role. I hope his look was completely redesigned though.

The Zero Suit was never even intended to be used for direct combat purposes in Zero Mission (and even Other M). I feel like it's a good example of why the whole "this random character needs to get in so THIS series can have more reps compared to THAT other series..." is a stupid idea. You should want Ridley and K. Rool in not because "well their series needs more reps ahuh", but because you feel they're actually good choices and deserving to be in Smash Bros.

I remember Sylux and Rundas being the two characters who usually were brought up, Sylux usually more so because of Tanabe saying he wanted to make the character return in potential future games, and the presumed cameo of Sylux' ship in the ending of Prime 3.

I think Prime 4 may be a bit too far off for that, but who knows.
Rundas should totally be an Assist Trophy, though.

Yea, I agree zss is only really a negative on samus's legacy unfortunately because of what it brought to the mainstream of how they see her.
Plus her role in zero mission is literally that she has to run and hide even just from normal space pirates and needs to get the varia suit back asap.
Then in smash she comes in and is a total badass and op and stronger than without the suit. She comes out to fight ridley as a badass in the zero suit, but trembled when in the power suit.
At least her design was toned down and looks better. But that caused immature assholes to downvote her trailer.
Samus, dark samus, and ridley is a perfect trio.
I would have liked Gandrayda but Ditto beat her to the punch.
Rundas would be cool but Nightmare is my hope for an AT (or Boss!)

what's neat is that back when the design document was being finalized in December 2015, he kind of was! He had gotten a 3DS spinoff, full retail game, and an amiibo, all internationally. His time, if ever, is now.

I've always felt like a generic Black Mage would be a great fit. I think the Black Mage (in the classic design: wizard hat, faceless, glowing eyes) is more iconique than people give it credit for. Barring creatures like Moogles and Cactuars, I think Black Mage is the closest you can get to representing FF as a whole, and a magic-based moveset would be a nice contrast to Cloud. In conclusion, #BlackMage4Smash2k18. Thank you for your time and consideration on this matter.
