Moderation is sometimes too strict and bans people who didn't seem to have ill intentions
On the other hand dogpiling posters with different views/outlooks is an ongoing issue which doesn't seem to get adressed
Everything is assumed to be from a US point of view

That being said it's still my fav forum and I'm glad to have a gaming forum where sexist and right wing views arent everywhere

An underrated aspect of this forum, and NeoGAF when it had a lot of traffic, is how useful discussion can be, like how it can effect your real life. The Instant Pot thread and the Hot sauce thread are a couple of good examples. This type of random non-gaming shit that can improve aspects of your life is one of the main reasons I visit these huge forums. I didn't go looking for hot sauce recommendations, I just saw the thread and clicked it. You can't really casually find that kind of thing on a forum structure like Reddit... hot sauce recommendations aren't going to hit the front page. Hopefully traditional message boards stick around.

Oh, Tapatio and Valentina if anyone was curious. Both have been AAA additions to my condiment cabinet.

Liberal and very supportive of alternate lifestyles and minorities. But would gladly kill them if an accusatory news story was released about them.

Sometimes struggles to maintain jobs and relationships due to poor understanding of humans.

Inability to conceive, which is why there are always posts going out of their way to say X is why they will never have kids.

Chromosome count off by a few.

Endlessly talks to self, unless arguing with others.

Great at compiling current events.

Genetically predisposed to colossal penis.

Games: Perfect for the Switch, where's my Switch port, I'm outraged at those Devs, how they dare to not port X to the Switch!

Etc: Crying about Trump, Live-Feed of Trump's Twitter, outrage at the opinion of some American bigot which no one outside of his/her own family knows. Also Star Wars and Dragon Ball.

Hangouts: The actual communities where people talk about varied stuff.

The moderation is too strict to the point where it stifles important conversation.

But as a whole it's still better than the alternative.

My hope is that the level of discourse settles into a happy medium between what it is now and how it used to be.

Having an extremely loud minority that employs some kind of pitchfork with us or against us mentality that likes to enforce ideas and ideals upon anyone. Except when it starts to come a bit too close to home and might mean enforcing those ideals upon themselves.

That's enough about pineapple on pizza.

But seriously, where are the loud pitchforky types? I don't recognise the description as fitting anybody I've encountered here.

Pretty much my take. Hard leaning left with minimal respect towards another person's opinions. We can all agree to disagree without being disrespectful. Plus lots of unnecessary angst it seems.

Dorks as far as the eye can see.

Very strong on human rights, which ought to be par for the course but go figure. Regular problems apart from that. Quick to judge, tons of virtue signaling. Still boys club defensive of criticism. Extremely antisocial in the awkward way rather than the dangerous

edit: oh, yeah, gaming. same mostly applies. Sony land. Switch is the new vita in terms of discussion and enthusiasm. being successful ratches the noise up a bit

I routinely struggle to see how many posters make it through daily life without having an aneurism judging by how they act here.

Of source, it's probably a outlet valve and their virtuous drubbing down of dissenting views is something they can't actually do in reality or don't have the courage to face the reprecussions for doing so.

That said, there is a remarkable amount of knowledge and expertise in a wide swath of areas that is so cool to see, especially on the gaming tech side. Top tier use of gifs shamelessly stolen from Reddit. Awe inspiring 4K PC screenshots. Lacking in the pick-up thread department (which I'm also guilty of.

Some of the game communities are super helpful and Canadian Deals Era is the MVP.

Enter any slightly controversial topic and you can find them. But the most clear examples would be in any Elon Musk thread or maybe the most recent Ninja / girl streamer debacle. It's mostly aimed at people in the public eye but when people enter such topics with different opinions or ideas they run the risk of getting swamped.

The thread about the guy who won't stream with women is on the gaming side, so I admit I wouldn't have seen it being an EtcetEra-only type. But now you mention it there are some people with very strong opinions about Elon Musk (both for and against.) Apart from his very exciting space launch systems, however, I find the man to be self-obsessed and disappointingly uninteresting, so I don't think I bother with those threads. The SpaceX thread is mostly free of nonsense.

Anyway, that explains to my satisfaction why my experience is so different from yours. ERA is big and we have different interests and follow different threads.

Gaming: Sony/Nintendo fans
Off Topic: Activists, world news, and medical topics in which OP should seek professional advice.
Hangouts: People having a good time in their bubble

Honestly, the community hangouts are the best part of this place and it feels like few people take notice.

Nowhere near the hivemind outsiders and current forum posters portray it as. Lots of varied opinions on both sides of Era.

Sadly, like everywhere else on the net, racism in all its ugly forms tends to crop up on a routine basis, particularly when the topic involves black issues.

Most are viciously empathetic. While some like to focus on the viciousness instead of the actual empathy.

That's how I perceive etc.

A far left leaning echo-chamber which grants certain individuals immunity no matter their views - right or wrong, and if you disagree (with the mods or them) you're ostracized. I really hope I'm banned because this is a community were the members are afraid of the moderation, and it shouldn't be the case. This place is NeoGaf in everything but name.

C'mon. We could be worse. We could be current GAF. Now THAT's bad.

Are you upset that apparently no one reported your post? I mean I'm not going to either, but it seemed like you wanted a dramatic exit.

Have you tried Frank's Red Hot Buffalo Sauce? Using that on wood charcoal grilled chicken wings has got me more compliments than any other food item. Granted, I do use a pork rub on them too (pre basting, for the initial sear) which might be blasphemy, but I'll be damned if it doesn't work.

Edit: my bad on the double post

On a related note, ComicsERA REPRESENT.

It felt so good to find that part of the community pretty much unchanged after the great migration. Love you all even if you read comics sometimes.

Not at all. I enjoy the forum (both sides) as a news aggregation source more than anything. I've just repeated what plenty have already said without ban. To be fair to this thread - it's been fairly open allowing users to post their opinion and not as restrictive as most tend to be.

Despite the inevitable warts, it's still the best forum out there. I do get the feeling that there's a lot of Trumpers lurking in the weeds though. I hope they stay that way, or perhaps learn a thing or two and change.

I don't know how people find it so difficult to stay out of threads they're not interested in, or have the potential to rile them up too much.

For sure. I should've clarified, I didn't mean current GAF but how it was before all that awful shit went down. Incidentally, I paid it a visit last week to see what kind of state it was in - that place is a trainwreck.

Honestly? A bad place to conversate for the most part. Gaming side is as it has always been, reactionary and digging for the memes but rarely a place to get real discussion going. Hangouts is the place to go with the games you like.

Etcetera is a perfect example that moderation is fucking hard work, but it's also a hard place to enjoy being as many people on there are fishing for responses to unleash their outrage on rather than discussing anything. It's filled with gotchas and it's the place to be if you like baseless accusations. It's the one place I think may actually be more openly hostile than Gaf had it. I can't speak for hangouts again though on this side.

The unfortunate reality is I just browse etcetera and for the most part keep chat to either hangouts or even more so discord these days.

Depends on which side of era.

Gaming: Disliking popular games because they are popular, Nintendo is doom/Saved, SONY IS BEAST
EtcetEra: Trump doomsaying, "I'm more woke than you!", people not understanding basic human activities, bathroom humor
Hangouts: People discussing that particular subject manner normally.
People with largely the same opinion and views getting bent out of shape over minutia.
Its gaf with a new paint job.

55% moderates, 10% right wingers taking little potshots, 30% people playing an endless and tiresome game of woke Olympics, 5% normal fucking human beings.
