Reviews:

OpenCritic | Metacritic PS4 | PC | iOS
5/5 - Donut County is a singular experience that transcends its simple, but potent core mechanic thanks to its idiosyncratic humor, clever gameplay twists, and a gleeful sense of what makes swallowing the world into a hole so cathartic. - We Got This Covered
8/10 - Donut County is a charming and straightforward example of how video games don't need to be overly complex or contain multiple mechanics and systems to make for a good time. While your enjoyment of the game will likely depend on how satisfying you find its overall loop of dropping stuff into a hole, if this does click with you, then there's a lot that you'll love. For the low price of entry, Donut County is worth picking up and spending an evening with just to have a good chuckle. - DualShockers

7.8/10 - It may be a very short diversion, but Donut County is a delight. It's absolutely brimming with personality, has a killer soundtrack and visual aesthetic, and is based on an irresistible gameplay hook. I'd have loved more, but I guess I'll just settle for playing through it again. - IGN

7.5/10 - Donut County is as simple as it is charming, and the story conceit pulling you along is light and enjoyable - Game Informer

7/10 - Much like the sugary treats in its name, Donut County is sweet, satisfying, and you'll wish there were more when you're done. It's a jovial little adventure that has some great ideas; moving a hole around making objects fall in is surprisingly addictive and entertaining. Serving as a bite-sized snack between bigger titles, this definitely hits the spot, but those looking for a more filling experience may be left a little hungry. - Push Square

6/10 - Donut County is high on charm but short on substance; a game about holes that doesn't quite feel whole. - GameSpot

No Score - The world is your playground in Donut County, and yet it's the most wholesome way to see everything come crashing down. - Polygon

I played Hole.io and thought the idea of this kind of game was brilliant for touch screens. It feels like Katamari as far as the rush you get from escalating your rate of collection. Super statisfying and in need of polish like this game seems to have.

Looking forward to it. This has some serious Katamari vibes.

I wonder if this will be this year's Inside. The comparison being how Inside took nearly six years and you can just feel the polish in its design, how that polish was evident in a simple elegant concept explored deeply. Donut County seems similar, taking its simple premise and exploring different puzzles and scenarios that all revolve around that singular idea. Complexity from simplicity

I've been waiting to play Donut County ever since it got announced years ago (and I finally got to try it out at E3 this year) and the final product was everything I wanted it to be

Always admired the story being this game - someone realizing the theme they had was incredibly appropriative and outright inaccurate, then doing the work to change that.

Will probably go for iOS since it's the easiest way to fit it in/get myself to play through it, but Mac or PS4 are possibilities, I guess. Waiting on iOS reviews, basically.

In regards to iOS, is it a virtual joystick setup if you do not connect a controller?
Seems like a perfect iOS game, but never been sold on Virtual Joysticks. If it is an alternate control scheme, will definitely consider it.

What a charming game and story amd it's just so satisfying to play despite just started it. I knew I would love this gameplay concept from the first trailer.

This question isn't for Donut County specifically: When does Steam update? In other words, can I play this at midnight Eastern time tonight or is it, like, 3am EST instead?

On iPad there's no virtual joystick in the sense that there's a fixed, visible joystick in either corner of the screen but the controls do work like a virtual joystick (i.e. tap screen, hold, drag finger left/right/up/down to move hole). It works well from the little I've played so far, not sure how else it would work.

Thanks for the reply. That is all I needed to hear. I just really dislike fixed virtual joysticks. Just picked it up. Interesting enough it looks like I was able to get it via Game Of The Day story, otherwise I would have had to wait until tomorrow.

One of the most joyful experiences I've ever played

Everything was on point, the humour, the visuals, the music.

I wish maybe the puzzles were a little harder or there were challenge variants of levels but overall just fantastic.

It's one-to-one control. So touch the screen anywhere, swipe to the right and the hole moves right the same distance you swiped. It works very nicely.

Well, you two sold me on the iOS version, then, hah. Guess I'm buying that now.
