Final Fantasy Insider, must have been when I was about 13 years old, I think it was just a bit after the launch of FF9. Those were the days :-)

Prodigy in early 90s .Local bbs really active in 1993-96, had a friend who ran one...the day we went from 2400 to 28.8 was a great day. Wow!

First really active website was apolyton civilization board. Loved the game from 1 through 4 but the time required to be good at it is too immense for career and family me.

Neowin.net
Was incredibly active there, at one point I was a Moderator, at one point I was a news writer. We also did 40 episodes of a gaming podcast before they really were a (big) thing.

A Silent Hill forum back in 2004 maybe.

Simply called Silent Hill Forum. And had a .co.uk adress.

SHF for short.

Still keep in touch with people from there. One of them is one of my real-life best friends these days.

1up discussion boards.

It was a joke that the 1up Yours podcast pretended to be based off that community for so long when everyone on the actual podcast just surfed GAF anyway.

Off topic though had a small community I really got into. Can't forget those days. Some real characters.

My first forum was Gamefaqs, which I signed up for about a month before I turned 13. Kind of weird to think I've been an obsessive internet forum poster for 15 years now.

I remember my signup date particularly well because I was technically breaking TOS. Before that it was AOL chatrooms. At Gamefaqs I orbited around LUE, the PS2 social board, and The Couch. After Gamefaqs I spent time in the Gamefaqs spin-off scene, a lot of young users were learning PHP and it was pretty popular to attempt various Gamefaqs clones. Gamefaqs Hell, Aqua Boards, Twisted Legacy, Outboards, Special Ops, etc. One of the seedier and more popular was Luelinks, which basically existed solely to circumvent Gamefaqs TOS but became it's own thing. From there I ended up discovering places like Something Awful and 4chan, for better and for worse. Mostly for worse. I was a dumbass and have grown up a lot since then and wouldn't go near places like that today, but as a young teen that kind of "no rules!!!" space was appealing to me. Eventually discovered NeoGaf, did a lot of growing up in late high school and college. Moved from NeoGaf to ResetEra.

I spent a lot of time on IGN's forums when I was in high school. During college I made the switch to gaf, and ten years after that I am here.

First I remember is being on IGN's forums discussing the Gamecube reveal. God what a shit community it was even then.

Not sure if that was the first. I generally avoided forums as I was used to Palace chat, IRC, etc.

Some Transformers site that doesn't exist anymore, then a Pokémon site that doesn't exist anymore, then Corona's Coming Attractions, then Bulbagarden.

neoseeker

I wonder if my account is still there,

Neoseeker. I was actually a mod at one point! But then, life through a bunch of unexpected curve balls my way and I accidentally went ghost. Not my proudest moment. Had a fun time on the site overall. Probably the only time I ever felt that I was actually part of an internet community.

I live in a giant bucket.
The forums for a defunct Nintendo site (TendoBox) just before it died in early 2002. I was 10 and went on some Nintendo fanboy rant against Xbox, LOL

Became a regular frequenter on Starmen.net, Gamefaqs and Smashboards soon after.

IGN, specifically the Resident Evil boards. Good times with the RE4 reveal meltdown. I remember obsessing over the Game Informer scans just utterly mindblown that it was even a Resident Evil game at the time.

Must have been Gamefaqs. I remember getting myself banned, for admitting that I was younger than 13 lmao.

It was a forum for exchanging Friend Codes with others (I think it was straight up called friendcode.com?) when I was around 9 or 10. I can't imagine it's around anymore.

At some point, both my sister and I had our copies of Animal Crossing: Wild World deliberately destroyed by some dude with Action Replay. That was not a fun day.

Midgar, With Love
FF Online. It was an old Final Fantasy database with impressive (for the time) coverage and polish. I downloaded MIDI soundtracks for a couple of weeks and then I decided to join the forums. It was my first exposure to roleplaying, too. I roleplayed as, like, Cloud or something.

I still remember some of the user names, but I haven't talked to any of them in like 16 years. Crazy.
