Will my man Adol ever get a break? How many more will he have to save?

Always down for more Ys :P.

I'm in public walking through a mall and I still let out an audible no when I read this. That Kefin remake is my no. 1 wanted game right now.

This seems like it follows the pattern from the last two trios of Ys games: a rough intro to the new style (Ys VI, Ys Seven), a remake (Oath in Felghana, Memories of Celceta), and a finale title aiming to encapsulate that design direction (Origin, Ys VIII). I wouldn't be surprised if Ys V's remake comes right after this one, possibly to bridge the gap between new Kiseki/Trails games in the Calvard arc.

We might very well see Romn for the first time if this takes place following VIII's plot. Admiral Agares could make his comeback!

I bought 8 for switch 2 months ago wen I thought I had time to play it, and I haven't even booted it up yet. I should really get to it because it looks amazing.

It'll be interesting to see when IX actually hits. I'm half-expecting news at TGS if Kondo feels comfortable enough to divulge this much already.

Sweetness, hopefully it goes full cel shading and kills it with the art direction. Been waiting for a good sale on Ys VIII, but nothing's dropped yet.

We could possibly get a reveal at TGS, but I figured their next game after Cold Steel 4 would be Tokyo Xanadu, since they hinted at a new one of those. For context, we typically get a new Ys every 3 years, and VIII released in 2016:

Dmu9CJu.jpg

They have their current structure established, so it's unlikely it would take the 4 years Celceta->VIII did. They also revealed VIII at TGS 2014.

But yeah, hella hyped. Ys is a pleasure to play through. This time it'll be a title designed for PS4 instead of Vita (unless they pull some craziness and release on that too, but that's... Unlikely).

Cel-shaded character models would work especially well for the new Ys V since the original art's still great and would translate 100% to any visual style Falcom can budget for the game. I'm expecting something much less interesting, though, and closer to the art direction they've pursued with VIII or recent Sen no Kiseki games.

In other news, I wonder when we'll next hear about Tokyo Xanadu's sequel.

IIRC Falcom have stated that they want to increase their release output - which makes sense, since banking almost everything on 1 major release a year isn't great in the longrun. Maybe we might see both TX2 and Ys IX next year, perhaps?

Considering 8 apparently sold most on Switch in the west launch-aligned (here's one post with info, look for others by Anihawk), I wonder if that might push either Falcom to get it on Switch themselves, or maybe NIS might do it again from their end. Apparently the credits show Disgaea folks having done the Switch version of Ys 8.

I don't fucking understand their productivity. I bring it up in every Falcom thread, but they're a company of 54 (plus their increasing outsourcing). The games are really good too :/

It all comes down to how much Falcom wants to expand or delegate to outsourced contractors. They still want design and quality control over their self-published products.

It'll be a while before Falcom tries to develop anything for Switch specifically, and they're unofficially done with ports as of Sen no Kiseki (II) Kai on PS4. Their outsourcing relationship with localizers works well so far, and why change that if it makes them enough money? Shareholder pressure to get onto Switch might increase, but the current company chairman (and founder) owns the most individual stock and would have to push the directors towards a risky platform shift. I hope Falcom doesn't stay with just Sony forever, but it's hard to deny how much technical and distribution support they've received over the years that Nintendo may or may not guarantee.

VIII set up some interesting stuff for a Romn game so I'm glad that's what's probably next. The V remake will probably be after that then.

I can confirm that's the case, it slipped my mind but a NISA rep told me at E3 that the port was handled by the same group at NISJ that did the Disgaea 5 port.

After thinking about it a bit, they might have Tokyo Xanadu 2 for 2020 and have Ys IX + the teased Ys vs Sen no Kiseki for next year. They still haven't followed up on that tease, and considering Sen IV is releasing in a month having it come out early next year might be a decent idea. Who knows, though - Falcom does what Falcom wants.

Makes sense, but is this a team sort of separate from the main Disgaea team, or did the actual OG Disgaea 5 team do both D5C and Ys 8 on Switch?

By the way, I should bring up that Ghostlight are teasing a JRPG port for Switch that's by Laughing Jackal (who may or not be the same company), and Tokyo Xanadu eX+ on PC was one of their ports. It's not unlikely to be a candidate IMO.

Was it just that screenshot from Tokyo Xanadu Ex+, or is there other stuff implying that's a thing? Would... Would it be a fighting game again? I never played the first one, but it was such a bizarre idea to me.

>Right after the events of Ys VIII

But right after that is the events of Ys VI... The interview should've asked if he meant Ys 7 instead of 8.

Either way, I'm looking forward to Ys finally going past Ys 7 chronologically and Adol can be in his mid-20s instead of early 20s for once.

Just the Tokyo Xanadu eX+ poster, yeah. Considering the first bit of concept art we got for Sen III was literally right next to it in the game, it's easy to assume that there's a plan to make it.

...I believe (haven't played it) that the first one - Ys vs. Sora no Kiseki - was a fighting game running on the Ys Seven engine with a similar battle system.

Please save us, Xseed.

And I really wanted an Ys V remake or a game that happens after Ys Seven story wise.

Oh well, in Falcom we trust.

I know it's their intent, but unless they can really +1 to their current development pipeline without delaying any of their existing pipeline, I find it hard to imagine that they'll be able to make a Ys vs Kiseki 2 at the moment.

At this point of time, they seem to be pretty solidly on the Ys, Kiseki, Xanadu cycle of games. The Xanadu slot used to be their "Others" slot but the success of TX has hinted pretty strongly from them that they'll make that another franchise.

It's not a particularly good game, it's a cool idea but the combat is really clunky. The character selection (on the Ys side, Trails is fine) is also really stupid, you get Chester and Geis and then all playable characters from Seven instead of some more variety.

Best part about it is that it also has a ton of stuff from other Falcom games like Brandish and Zwei, though only in the form of music and assist characters.

Damn no remake of V? :(
Not yet, but President Kondo talks about Ys V often enough in passing that we can't rule it out.

Personally I'd rather have a Falcom rhythm game before a new crossover fighter since it'd break new ground for the company and international fandom. A Falcom Gakuen-style game with music from across Falcom's huge catalog would rule, and it'd play well on mobile too.

Aha, rhythm, SRPG (kind of my dream for a crossover title), management sim, whatever.

Cool stuff. I really enjoyed my time with Ys VIII.

I'm considering playing some of the others, but I really don't know where to start.

Men I'm so down for all of these. This year I finally started all of these franchises. Love them all. Very excited for another Tokyo Xanadu.

This. I fell down the Falcom rabbit hole recently and looked at a list of their releases and was amazed at how much they've released. I'm really curious as to how they approach making so many games so quickly with a relatively small team.

Fuck yes. Could a release next year be possible? We won't be getting another Trails game for a few years now that the Erebonia saga will end this year.

Hope NISA does a better job with this one. Not like they could make a worse translation on the first try than they did with VIII.

An Ys V remake would be nice, since it's now the only one I haven't played yet. Would also like to see something after Seven.
But I'm fine with everything, as long as NISA stays far away from it, or tremendously improves the quality of their output, because their handling of VIII was just a friggin dumpster fire on every level, and Ys deserves far better.

I'm also curious if it will keep the party-style or re-invent itself again.

I hope they strike some deal to work together with NIS to bring this to the Switch a lot faster than the last game!
