Wow, I'm surprised this happened so soon after it was announced that he was going off treatment.

Rest in peace.

One of the pillars of American government since the 80s.

Very much like a Ted Kennedy.

RIP. I hope his final days were relatively painless.
That's way faster than expected, RIP. This feels weird, honestly. I've seen him talk a lot. 08 is seared in my memory, this feels weird.
With public figures a public announcement like that is unfortunately almost always way closer to the end than with a similar news from a private citizen.

Man. Disagreed with him and disliked a lot of his policy positions a whole hell of a lot (though also aligned with him on a couple things, campaign finance reform in particular), but he has been such a staple of American politics for so long and the face of a Republican Party that is now virtually extinct that it's strange to imagine him gone. More than that, he was a war hero who gave more for his country than any one person should ever be asked to give.

Rest in peace.

I have no kind words for somebody working to deny healthcare to other people. There are plenty of better people that had to die to cancer and only managed to live half as long as him. I don't have it in me to pity him. The best I can do is keeping it at that.

Damn, that was quick. That care must have really kept him going if he immediately dies afterwards.

RIP, I guess.

Rest in Peace to an American hero.

Didn't agree with him on much, but he was the definition of hero.
Heroes don't use their last actions on Earth to ensure that fascists remain in power.

If he wanted to be remembered as a hero he should have resigned and let the people elect the next senator in his place.

From my admittedly limited perspective he seemed like one of the few Republicans (if not just the one) that I could respect even if I disagreed with him and never would have voted for him.
RIP.

Didn't agree 99% of the time but we got to see this look of disappointment on McConnell because of his no vote. RIP McCain

Shit rip. I read about him stopping treatment yesterday. Didn't anticipate for him to pass so soon. Cancer fucking sucks.

I was never a fan of his politics but he always held himself as an adult and was a war hero. Rest in peace.

As a reminder, do not celebrate this occasion or declare that you're glad that the man is dead. It should not be too much to ask that we treat his death better than the alt right is. You are still welcome to discuss and criticize John McCain's political legacy without the aforementioned vitriol. We also ask that this thread stay on topic and not get derailed into wider ancillary arguments like the Vietnam war.

RIP.

Didn't think it would happen so soon after the announcement of him stopping treatment, but he/his family probably knew it was coming soon.

Wow, that is incredibly quick from the announcement he would no longer seek treatment.

Sad, and thoughts and prayers to his family.

I have a lot of political opinions about him but it feels like the Senate just got even less decent, at least the Republicans.
Agree. I didn't agree with his politics AT ALL. Like not even a little bit. However, he at least presented his politics with a shred of dignity that is severely lacking in today's political climate.

Who is running in his district to replace him? Will there be a special election or will it just be decided in November?

I don't agree with his policies, but I respect the human being he was. He fought for his country and endured torture for his nation. I cannot speak a bad word about a person who underwent the the horrors he did, regardless of how I feel about his politics.
