So with DMC5 coming and looking to be my first DMC game to play. I fired up Gamepass to play some DMC.
Gamepass has two options DMC4 Special Edition or DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition. So my question is wich to play?

DmC is more accessible and still a pretty fun time, but DMC4SE is way more technical and has a lot more to do in terms of gameplay possibilities (five playable characters, some with different weapons to use).

i mean if you're planing on playing DMC5 then DMC4 is better since it will catch you up on the characters

For someone who isn't hardcore about the series roots I'd say that DmC has a better story, better level design and more accessible combat. DMC4 is more punishing and if you want your skills to be tested and like chasing high ranks on each mission then it's a bigger challenge. DMC4 is also more about pure combat while DmC is more of an adventure game with platforming, although a large focus is on combat.

For a casual playthrough for someone new to the series, DmC is the way to go in my opinion.

What is up with all these reboot vs. original series DMC threads?

Anyway, Special Edition. The DE for DmC fixed the most glaring issues with the game but the core gameplay minus the platforming still remained boring compared to the mainline games. I play DMC for the gameplay alone so this isn't even a question.

DmC is a better game overall (especially the DE with turbo on) but the combat mechanics are quite a bit more advanced in DMC4 and is more similar to how DMC5 will play.

This is a hard one, on one hand, DMC5 is a direct sequel to DMC4's story, the first game where Nero is introduced, on the other hand the overall package in DmC:DE is better, and it itself is a good action game despite being a reboot set in its own timeline.

I'd say go with DMC4, but definitely keep DmC:DE in mind in the future, better yet, get both.

It started with people trying to say Part 5's gameplay/combat was borrowed/inspired by Dmc.

First DMC?
Get the HD Collection then, why would you get into a franchise with the 4th/Reboot is beyond me.
Also both of those games are MAD cheap, getting both would easily be like 40-50$.
But to answer your question, DMC4 is the game that takes place before DMC 5 you know.

HD Collection would be a better shout for a start.

But DMC4SE if you had to choose one. More characters, just better combat, Nero is there and well he's a character in 5 so it'd be a good starter.

DMC4 itself acts like a soft reboot of sorts, but yeah considering that Vergil is in DMC5, I'd say that DMC1 and DMC3 are absolute must-plays if you're intersted in 5's story.

Im playing dmc4 for few weeks when i have time and game s chore to play. Combat s complex and can be fun but its not satisfying to me. Also i hate level design.
Obviously game from 2008.

DmC s better game overall.

DMC4 SE, the other while not a bad game just doesnt stack up against the mainline games in what the series is known for, the gameplay.

DmC is better than the entire rest of the franchise and most people just can't accept that.

The beautiful irony.

It's always the DmC ''fans'' that have to start up shit in similar threads because people favor( shocking I know?) classic DMC.

''Ugh people are recommanding DMC4, better pull the DmC is the best game card because people cant just accept that!''

Don't make this into a DmC vs DMC thread. The OP just wants to know what is the better option for starting the series with. Please provide info backing up your choice to help them decide.

If you've gotta pick between though two then go with DMC4SE. Trying to get into a franchise by playing a now-disregarded reboot first doesn't really make a whole load of sense. Even in terms of difficulty, though DMC4 is a bit more demanding than DmC it's pretty easy compared to the rest of the franchise (except 2), so it's not too hard to get into.

Otherwise, though, you really should get the HD Collection and play 1 and 3 first (honestly just skip 2). Not only do they look like they'll be relevant story-wise to DMC5 but they're still just great games and it's nice to see how the series has evolved over time. 3 is often regarded as the best in the series anyway so definitely don't skip on that one.

Get round to DmC Definitive Edition (not the standard edition) eventually as it actually made some pretty good changes. It doesn't hold up to the rest of the series, but the Definitive Edition is still a pretty good action game worth playing. You might want to skip the cutscenes though.

If you're interested in 5, 4SE is the way to go. But if you want the whole experience just start with 1, skip 2, 3SE-4SE.

I don't recommend DmC because controls, playability are way different and the story has nothing to do with 5.

I recommend playing through the hd collection first before going into 4se or DmCde. I feel you'll miss out on Dantes character if you go straight to 4.

4. Characters and mechanics are evolutions of those systems. If your aim is to play one before 5, you gotta go 4.

I would say as an overall package DmC is the better choice. The campaign in DMC4 is honestly kind of awful. DMC 3 is significantly better.

We don't need to have this in every thread.

OP, ideally you want to play both in time, since both have their pros and cons. If you're playing to familiarize yourself with the series, I'd say to play 4 first (and maybe again closer to 5s release). 5 is evolving concepts established in 4 so it's best to get a handle on it before jumping into the deep end with 5. Be warned that the aesthetics and campaign might not appeal to you.

Though DmC:DE might be the better jumping in point for you, it plays fairly differently to the other games but still got the core concept down, and since it's a standalone title, it doesn't have the baggage of the previous games canon. Be warned that the aesthetics and campaign might not appeal to you.

If you have time just play both, starting with DmC and then play DMC 4 closer to the release of 5. Personally I'd say play DmC then 1, 3 and 4 in that order if you really want to get into the franchise and by the time you finish 5 should be out which looks to be a huge improvement from the older games.

DMC4 is probably close to 2 in terns of bad DMC games. It just has so many flaws. I would get the HD collection and play 1 and 3 oven it. 4 was a big step down and no shocker they decided to go elsewhere to make a followup.

DmC is a much better game. Still has flaws. But at least half the game isnt back tracking.

My opinion if you want to get hyped for DMCV and don't have a lot of time just get 4. if you have time start with DmC then go DMC4.

DMC4SE:
  • 5 playable characters.
  • 1/2 of a campaign (halfway through the campaign, you switch characters and do the levels in reverse), 6-8 hours tops
  • 3 of the character's campaigns are just cut scenes at the beginning and end, with almost zero effort to make them tie into the actual levels
  • Highly technical combat that you can sink hours into trying to master
  • Bullshit dice game that's forced upon you... twice.
  • Decent story, but will prepare you for DMC5
DmC:DE:

  • 2 playable characters (1 main story, 1 DLC)
  • full campaign and DLC campaign, main campaign is about 6-8 hours, DLC is 2-3 hours tops
  • fun combat when compared to most western action games, but not as technical as DMC4 (though this might be a good thing to some)
  • Edgy story/writing, though the DE has cut/toned down a lot of it

I'd go with DMC4SE, just so you get familiar with the characters and the combat that game will have. I can't stress enough how awful the campaign is though.

Omni
Both

Havent played either version but their OG versions only on PS3 (DMC4) and PC (DmC) respectively.

I did get DMC4 SE via a humble bundle for PC and bought it for PS4 recently when it was like $7?

Planning to get DmC Definitive Edition when its $10 or below since that version isnt on PC.
