Still waiting for my jump gate dock next month. Seems very promising piece of hardware

System is like a tank for me, take it in and out of the dock almost daily, use it at home and out sometimes, play docked and undocked, and don't have any issues at all. Clearly there's quite a few issues, but i definitely don't feel like they're normal, or there'd be large recalls right?

I'm pretty rough with the device too, I kinda just force it in the dock and throw it in and out of bags, and it's still totally fine lol. Guess I just got a good one.

Thing that concerned me about that research is the Official Dock ignoring what the charger is telling it and dumping excess current through to the Switch when it doesn't need it, and the charge sticking around for over the USB spec time after undocking.
The Dock is not putting excess power through to the Switch. It just assumes that a device capable of supplying 15v/0.5A of power is also capable of supplying the whole 15v power profile range, and pulls whatever it needs. It assumes USB-C PD 2.0 compliance from being able to pull 15 volts, and it assumes that the charger is capable of its required 45-Watt output because it's... inconsiderate, like that. So the only thing that gets damaged in this scenario, is the power supply - IF, it's a power supply rated for less than 45 volts, AND it supports 15-volt power profiles. Considering 15-volt profiles are mostly used by laptops and large tablets that tend to require similar power input, power supplies in the "30W and less" range that are USB-C PD2.0 compatible are rather few and far between.

So wait, I've been charging my switch on the road with my ravpower 20100mAh battery and an anker usb-c cable. Should I...not be doing that? Because I'm not going to stop.
You should be fine as long as you're just using the powerbank with an undocked Switch. There have been no confirmed reports of damage caused by 3rd-party powerbanks without a 3rd-party dock involved.

The rule of thumb is don't run your switch off of a 3rd party power source. As long as you're only powering it from the battery or the official dock you're fine. You can use 3rd party chargers to charge the battery.

This is fucked.

WTF is wrong with Nintendo? Since buying a Switch in late May, I've amassed a laundry list of things that objectively make Nintendo a shit company. Everything from dubious controller design, screen scratching docks, wanting protection money to allow you to back up save data to the garbage voice chat app and lack of any standard media options like a web browser.

Gods damned, this company is not like any other.

The combination of screen scratching issues, cracking due to heat, and power management leading to bricked units is what makes this so poor.

More people have probably bricked their switches modding than have ever damaged their switches from everything you mentioned combined.

This is fucked.

You should actually read the thread rather than make a declaration on poor research that suits your cognitive dissonance.

Is there an official Nintendo statement that tells not to use any third party dock? With so many docks in the market, I believe Nintendo will release an official atatement to not to use anything but their docks. Just bought a Insignia Dock after so many recommendation videos and now I'm thinking off returning it to Best Buy.

WULFF DEN is drawing on a lot of correct information, but isn't correctly interpreting it.

The only part of the Switch system that handles USB-C power incorrectly is the Dock. It has issues with requesting more power than it negotiates via the USB-C PD protocol. This will more likely damage your charger than the Dock or the Switch, but the problem is there, so that's a thing.

The Switch itself, when used with a USB-C compliant device, behaves correctly. It has no trouble charging from any regular charger, as long as that charger supports either USB-C PD 2.0 (for maximum-speed charging) or the USB standard 5V trickle-charge.

...
So my takeaway from this is using a charger or external battery with the portable Switch unit itself is fine, yes?

Still waffling over to keep my Jumpgate pledge or not. I've docked my Switch like... <5 times, but I know I'll be doing it for Smash and since I have a launch day Switch, I'm a bit worried about the screen. They say they've tested it, but... I guess worst case I'll just avoid it after each firmware update till someone tests it again.

How many people actually have had hear cracks or bricks?

a lot.

this shit isn't common though

its more common than you want to think

function scrollToId(selector, offset = 60) { window.scroll(0, document.querySelector(selector).offsetTop - offset); return false } More people have probably bricked their switches modding than have ever damaged their switches from everything you mentioned combined.

you have to love nintendo apologists

the console has a tons of faults and short comings please stop trying to pretend the switch is free from faults.

I'm not saying it hasn't happened, but you can't also exaggerate it the other way.

I use a third-party shell, with all the guts from the official dock. I'm good with that.

Between this and the actual dock scratching your switch it seems like you just shouldn't dock it at all. Which sucks for someone like me who has no use for a portable system.
Chill with this. I've had a Switch since launch day and literally no scratches. Just use a screen protector and you're good.

I've been chargijg my switch since launch with my MacBook pro charger. No issues. Anecdotal, but I would not freak out about this stuff.

Hardware, specifically power related hardware, is made to be VERY durable. The switch should be able to protect itself.

I'll never get over people acting like this isn't a prevelant issue. There's like a thread about it every month. But totally a non issue.
I can see the screen scratching which sucks (never happened to me) but the you don't see anybody complaining about power issues with the original Switch dock. And yeah, maybe don't use unauthorized accessories like third party docks for this very reason. The bottom screen leaving an imprint on the top screen of my 3DS was a bigger issue than this.

Sucks for people that have had this happen. I get why some people want a different dock but the system comes with a lightweight and easy to move dock. Should just safely use that.

I heard about the scratching issues and my wife made me a little cover for the front of my dock. Scratch free but I definitely have the cracking issue. Near the power button is a small crack. Going to see if Nintendo will fix the back before it gets worse.

If it is not being used as portable, why do you care about the screen? :P

Just kidding. The best solution is to get a glass screen protector, and to not use third party docks.

This whole thing reminds me of the PS4's yellow light situation before launch where people were freaking out over another total non-issue. Why are you guys trying to make everything out to be another RROD? Is it more console wars bs?

Not cool and i am also disappointed with my Switch quality. Broken at the power button and I had to buy a screen protector for it after a careful week and seeing two scratches :( didnt need a screen protector for any of my devices so far because i am careful but not here.

But good to see that chargers and power banks shouldnt make a problem at least. USB-C is still a fucked "standard" *looks at Dell*

Same here, but to those that it happened to, that's not really a comfort is it? Still to pretend like this is happening to the majority of users is ridiculous as well.
Oh for sure, I feel bad for those who got faulty docks out of the box, they can get with Nintendo for replacements or from the store they bought it from.

Charging is fine. Issue it docks trying to handshake the video/charging at the same time because the dock connection is not actually USB-C.

Nice, thank you! It's a shame that there are so many possible problems you can have with the Switch and it's Accessoires

This is annoying. I would like a smaller portable dock, because the official one is huge, in the sense that it's full of air. Also I avoid putting it in luggage as it could bend the empty front panel.
