The Dock is not putting excess power through to the Switch. It just assumes that a device capable of supplying 15v/0.5A of power is also capable of supplying the whole 15v power profile range, and pulls whatever it needs. It assumes USB-C PD 2.0 compliance from being able to pull 15 volts, and it assumes that the charger is capable of its required 45-Watt output because it's... inconsiderate, like that. So the only thing that gets damaged in this scenario, is the power supply - IF, it's a power supply rated for less than 45 volts, AND it supports 15-volt power profiles. Considering 15-volt profiles are mostly used by laptops and large tablets that tend to require similar power input, power supplies in the "30W and less" range that are USB-C PD2.0 compatible are rather few and far between.Thing that concerned me about that research is the Official Dock ignoring what the charger is telling it and dumping excess current through to the Switch when it doesn't need it, and the charge sticking around for over the USB spec time after undocking.
You should be fine as long as you're just using the powerbank with an undocked Switch. There have been no confirmed reports of damage caused by 3rd-party powerbanks without a 3rd-party dock involved. So wait, I've been charging my switch on the road with my ravpower 20100mAh battery and an anker usb-c cable. Should I...not be doing that? Because I'm not going to stop.
That doesn't stop this from being a real issue that exists.I've played my launch switch for hundreds of hours docked and have had no issues.
Not saying it hasn't happened, but I also think it's exaggerating to say this is awful as being a docked console.
The combination of screen scratching issues, cracking due to heat, and power management leading to bricked units is what makes this so poor. Not saying it hasn't happened, but I also think it's exaggerating to say this is awful as being a docked console.
How many people actually have had hear cracks or bricks? The combination of screen scratching issues, cracking due to heat, and power management leading to bricked units is what makes this so poor.

This is fucked.
WTF is wrong with Nintendo? Since buying a Switch in late May, I've amassed a laundry list of things that objectively make Nintendo a shit company. Everything from dubious controller design, screen scratching docks, wanting protection money to allow you to back up save data to the garbage voice chat app and lack of any standard media options like a web browser.
Gods damned, this company is not like any other.
So my takeaway from this is using a charger or external battery with the portable Switch unit itself is fine, yes?WULFF DEN is drawing on a lot of correct information, but isn't correctly interpreting it.
The only part of the Switch system that handles USB-C power incorrectly is the Dock. It has issues with requesting more power than it negotiates via the USB-C PD protocol. This will more likely damage your charger than the Dock or the Switch, but the problem is there, so that's a thing.
The Switch itself, when used with a USB-C compliant device, behaves correctly. It has no trouble charging from any regular charger, as long as that charger supports either USB-C PD 2.0 (for maximum-speed charging) or the USB standard 5V trickle-charge.
...

function scrollToId(selector, offset = 60) { window.scroll(0, document.querySelector(selector).offsetTop - offset); return false } More people have probably bricked their switches modding than have ever damaged their switches from everything you mentioned combined.
I'm not saying it hasn't happened, but you can't also exaggerate it the other way.a lot.
its more common than you want to think
you have to love nintendo apologists
the console has a tons of faults and short comings please stop trying to pretend the switch is free from faults.
I wonder if the Hori d-pad Joycon that releases in the US next month will harm the Switch.
This is literally a non-issue for like, everyone.Between this and the actual dock scratching your switch it seems like you just shouldn't dock it at all. Which sucks for someone like me who has no use for a portable system.
The rule of thumb is don't run your switch off of a 3rd party power source. As long as you're only powering it from the battery or the official dock you're fine. You can use 3rd party chargers to charge the battery.
Chill with this. I've had a Switch since launch day and literally no scratches. Just use a screen protector and you're good.Between this and the actual dock scratching your switch it seems like you just shouldn't dock it at all. Which sucks for someone like me who has no use for a portable system.
I'm using a third Party charging dock (no HDMI) with an official Nintendo charger in my bedroom. (this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/Supremery-...r=8-2&keywords=Supremery+Nintendo+Switch+Dock )
I hope I will be fine...no problems in 6 months now. Maybe it is okay since it's the official charger?
You should actually read the thread rather than make a declaration on poor research that suits your cognitive dissonance.
I'll never get over people acting like this isn't a prevelant issue. There's like a thread about it every month. But totally a non issue.

I can see the screen scratching which sucks (never happened to me) but the you don't see anybody complaining about power issues with the original Switch dock. And yeah, maybe don't use unauthorized accessories like third party docks for this very reason. The bottom screen leaving an imprint on the top screen of my 3DS was a bigger issue than this.I'll never get over people acting like this isn't a prevelant issue. I use the Anker PD so hopefully it's OK. They make the official one which looks exactly the same + Nintendo logo.Yes, so long as the item itself isn't buggy and doing overdraws or misbehaving. But this would brick/damage any device.
Oh for sure, I feel bad for those who got faulty docks out of the box, they can get with Nintendo for replacements or from the store they bought it from.Same here, but to those that it happened to, that's not really a comfort is it? Still to pretend like this is happening to the majority of users is ridiculous as well.
Charging is fine. Issue it docks trying to handshake the video/charging at the same time because the dock connection is not actually USB-C.
Good reason to buy a switch pro controller now I guess.
Its what I did to be safe.
What does this have to do with that ? Do they provide a wall charger with the pro controller ?
Well... I know you said in the OP.... but I've had no issues with the best buy insignia dock so far... Fingers crossed.

Because I dont want my 300 dollar gaming system to be damaged through no fault of my own.....

There has been no case of a cable or powerbank or anything bricking your console. It seems to stem from the docking. You've been pretty lucky so far with that charging cable. So far.
