She's young, she made a mistake on social media, and she was reprimanded. I agree she should be more careful, but taking out the internship was, although fair, probably too big of a punishment. Glad she got it back.

OTOH Hickam getting all this harrassment from the furry community is absolutely ridiculous. He doesn't deserve all of this scorn.

Also, just in general, it's probably a good idea to maintain your internet persona accounts and your real person accounts separate just for stuff like this.

Wait, what the fuck is those people's problem?!

He made amends with her and was helping her get a job in NASA (not even an internship, but an actual job), right?

WHAT THE FUCK IS EVEN THEIR GODDAMN PROBLEM?!

I can't see her follow-up to him identifying himself, so I don't know how she responded, but her initial tweet was fine and if she thought some random twitter user was trying to tell her how to behave, I can see why she snarked back. Damned embarrassing that she didn't know who he was, though, and the harassment directed towards him afterward is inexcusable. I'm glad she reached out and apologized and they were able to resolve it between them.

Its her twitter page, she shouldn't have to be afraid of not being serious and getting fired for it. Sorry but that's lame as hell to me.
I'm sure they don't want to hire the kind of person who publicly tells strangers to suck their dick and balls. Decorum and acting like an adult count. The world isn't a free for all.
The sooner she (and you) learn that, the better.

I don't have an issue with her getting it back since I assume they talked about it, got her side of the story why she did something so stupid, she was probably warned that if it happens again it is bye bye.

Correctly handled by NASA since the world isn't black and white where you make a mistake and there is no chance of redemption.

Some people just seem to be out for blood for blood sake.

You say "not being serious", I say "publicly tarnishing the name of her employer".

I think there's some room here, though. She had just gotten it. If she'd started the job, had it in her visible profile, and then abused people it'd be a different story, but swearing excitedly over landing a dream internship and being a jerk to another twitter user* it's a bit much to say she's tarnishing her employer yet. Hickam was generous to give her the heads up to act like an adult, especially if you name your company, but I'd say the telling would be how she comported herself afterwards. Especially with such a significant reminder. I'd agree that as an adult you really shouldn't need a reminder like that, but I'm happy to let people learn and improve on softer matters.

*I think it's pretty obvious she didn't realize who this guy was. A lesson to be more mature in general, to be sure.

"Suck my dick and balls".

As I said, it's her response after he identified himself I haven't seen.

I wouldn't necessarily call that snarking back but hey, maybe that's where we are right now with Twitter.

I called it 'snarking' because the way Hickman only posted one word came off like that old lady at the supermarket that tut-tuts you for cursing when you drop a Honeydew on your foot. She 'retorted' to that finger wagging tone (IMO). Personally, I don't understand why people are so rude and abrasive online or act differently than they do in real life, but it doesn't seem out of the norm for Twitter, hence calling it 'snark'.

I'm laughing hard at the people defending her in the last few pages. Specifically the "couldn't he have said more than just Language?" And the "it's her personal private Twitter she can say what she wants; are we only allowed to hire perfect people?" posters. Truly falling over yourselves to look ridiculous. Thanks

Oh man another one above me. They stop being harmless comments when you direct them at somebody in the second tweet. Is that really so hard to understand? If you're braver enough to bring it like that, prepare for the consequences. When keeping it real goes wrong.
Exactly. What the hell does "private twitter" even mean? It's not a personal journal. It's open to the public and you have to treat it similarly to how you would talk in real life, except that everyone can see it forever.

There's no defending her even with the excuse that she is excited. I should be about her age and understand that you don't say this shit under your personal account. Even if you're remotely capable you should know employers can see what you write. If people want to post stupid shit they make a finsta or whatnot so there's not as much risk. It's beaten into our heads a thousand times and if she hasn't learnt that then hopefully this will teach her.

I thought everything in the OP was hilarious, and I'm happy to hear Hickam took it lightly and helped her get her internship back.

Her friends are trash though, she (and the world at large) should cut those idiots off rigorously.

his kind of exchange is common.

Person A - Fuck, this shit is so super great!
Person B - Mind your language!
Person A - Fuck that this is too exciting!

I can honestly remember dozens of times that a call for "mind you language" in a moment of excitement was met with further swearing as if to say "screw minding my language at time like this!".

Which can obviously have consequences, and can obviously be immenesly stupid given the correct context, but it's a harmless and common exchange usually.

Some of you are being abusrdly righteous about this, still, and it's ridiculous.

She wouldn't have deserved to lose her internship to NASA over that tweet.

... She might have deserved it for not knowing who Homer Hickam is, though. How have you not seen October Skies?

I saw this yesterday holy crap did this take a turn for the worse and this topic blew up... Imagine wanting to work for NASA, getting an internship and telling Homer Hickam off while apparently not knowing who he is, holy shit.

Disagree, that's not the kind of attitude you want a to-be intern to have working at a government agency.

Wait... don't they just want to dress and identify (I belive) as an animal? Or do they want to have sex with real animals?
It's all rooted to the same thing.
Just as I wouldn't trust my kids to be babysit by someone that loooooooves to watch "lolicon" anime shit, I wouldn't trust my dog with someone that gets turned on with the appearance of a dog.

So the defense force harassed him off twitter even after he tried to help her after her dipshittery. What a fucking garbage fire.

What's really ridiculous is still making excuses for her. She didn't say "Screw minding my language". She chose to be vulgar here and you keep trying to obfuscate that fact in a really misguided defense.

What an idiot. She could have least googled this person to find out who he is. Yikes! I wouldn't hire her back after that. Homer is going to continue to receive vitriol from these fuckwads. Her actions have consequences.

Can we not "Era" hvie mind pls? I mean, you are "Era" too.

I was specifically referring to the bolded, but I am also referring to a trend of people throwing their weight behind wanting people who made mistakes to be shamed and stripped of all opportunity.

It's all rooted to the same thing.

I've never tried to obfuscate the fact she was being vulgar.

It's sillier to keep the hyperbole spinning at this point, tbh.

I can't figure out if people on defense here are just completely clueless with regards proper decorum or if they can just see themselves reacting as inappropriately as she did and are defending themselves by proxy.

Don't you agree people are worth a second chance? At least when it comes to this sort of mistake?

It's not hyperbole when her and her friend's dipshittery have had consequences on Hickam.

She's not responsible for that shitstorm, though.

No, lol, but I guess I'm not surprised to see the hyperbole is consistent.

Remember when a second chance means to redeem yourself with action instead of getting a better job for free...
This is where I'm at in regards to her. It's one thing to get the same internship back. But he's getting her a better job.

Bullshit.

Though not sure if Hickam is all that interesting in looking for a better internship for her anymore.

Well, good for her? Why does it matter if they settled it and discussed it and they have confidence in her again?
