Luckily, i was able to severely cutback on my alcohol (and soda) intake since getting a new job. Still, i guess the damage is already done.

I love beer, it's basically a hobby of mine lol. I need to cut back, but can't really see myself stopping entirely. I just don't want to. I'll roll the dice on my long term health. If my body starts showing real issues I'll reconsider.

Adding in things that are tangentially related to drinking alcohol in this study is... Hmmm. I don't think it's necessary. It's also slightly sketchy in terms of causality. Like if a guy who commits a violent crime had consumed alcohol before hand, is the alcohol responsible?

I've never drank alcohol before. I've always been curious what it'd feel like being slightly impaired and tipsy, or even full out wasted. But only for a moment. Still even if I wasn't raised in a way that made alcohol disallowed, I doubt I'd be someone who'd have much of it anyway. Kind of like how I don't smoke, or do recreational drugs. The positive aspects to my financial and physical health are really useful

But from an 'outsider' looking in, I've always wondered about the fascination with alcohol and drinking culture. It never really made much sense to me. It's weird in that during school, whle I had some Asian friends, the majority of people I hung out with were white. As soon as Uni started though, it was almost like an immediate seperation and I slowly drfited away from my white friends, and now hang out with mainly Asians. They didn't understand why I didn't want to hang out in pubs and nightclubs, and I didn't get why alcohol was necessary if we ever had to hang out or go somewhere.

There's no need to drink, but it is pretty fun (for most). There's something to be said for the creative benefits too. I do all my best writing with a glass of wine or a pint.

Era, you can be so irrational sometimes (as seen in the vegan threads too).
Alcohol is entrenched in society, I get it. But you can raise above tribalist habits and just get rid of it.

It is vivid how people advocate JUST DRINK WATER, BRO mentality when it comes to diet coke, but then turn around and almost scream at the idea of stopping alcohol consumptions.
Be rational.

I'm not a scientist but I thought this was really really obvious. I've seen some weird backlash and disbelief about it.

Either way, it ain't gonna stop me drinking.

It's almost like this is a forum with hundreds of different members that respond to different things.

It's almost like people like drinking alcohol.

Not everyone wants to be a health monk, it's a trade off sometimes.

What's the point of living longer if I can't enjoy a drink every once in a while.

The "one or two drink per day improves your health" was so obviously linked to the alcohol lobbies I never payed attention to it.

People who screech "DRINK WATER!" whenever they hear the words "juice" or "diet soda" and then go out drinking are hilarious.

Well I'm going to die then.

I drink 1-2x a week at most, but I'm not giving that up.

Most people have some kind of unhealthy behaviour, be it physical or emotional. Rational is being aware that changing patterns of behaviour (and even accepting challenging ideas) is a very human struggle.

So they include traffic deaths and suicide when looking at heath risks?NNot super useful for individuals than but interesting in aggregate.

I am far less concerned about suicide than I am about heart disease.

That's fine. I'll die a year or three earlier rather than stop, because if I can have a beer in the evening or a glass of wine with dinner then what's the point?

People enjoy getting drunk with friends.

Now I know a lot of people on era don't have friends so it might be a hard concept to understand for some, but people do enjoy having fun with others in ways that allows them to "let loose"

That's more than twice the yearly death rate for car accidents.

Edit: based on this http://asirt.org/Initiatives/Informing-Road-Users/Road-Safety-Facts/Road-Crash-Statistics

Well the Stat includes all car accidents that have any alcohol involved which is around 30%. Add all suicide that is committed by someone who drinks and you account for a good portion of the deaths and even more of the expect life loss since both disproportionately affect younger people.

I get really drunk like once every 2 months.

And drinkba couple of beers a week (a friend works on a beer factory, so we get free beers). As long as I'm exercising enough I should be cool right?

At the end of the day this study isn't going to stop me from having a good whisky every once in a while, or a cold cider in the summer.

I don't drink to get drunk, I enjoy the taste....so much like some good red meat I'll keep on going in moderation and at the end of it all whatever finishes me off finishes me off. As long as I don't have either to excess so they stay special I don't think I've done too badly.

It's not that surprising when you consider how aggressive a chemical alcohol (even in watered down form) is. Hell, our body has to make so many transformation to get alcohol into a digestible form, and most of the intermediate states are rather toxic.
So it's not surprising that this isn't all that healthy. It's more amazing that our bodies have adapted so well to taking in small doses of ethanol once in a while (assuming your body can produce the needed enzymes).

More or less stopped drinking last year, now I only drink maybe a single beer or glass of wine once a month, I don't really miss it.

Just going by the conclusions, it appears to turn alcohol into a yes/no dichotomy, instead of the inverse U shape that all the research found prior. I don't really understand how losing nuance would be "state of the art research". That's just as much finding data to validate preconceived notions as the alcohol lobby does.

Like of course if you lump me in together with raging alcoholics, it would be more healthy to not drink at all. But why would you lump me in with those unless you want to make some kind of non-scientific point?

I'm currently reading this article sitting outside at a German restaurant with a pint of hof in one hand and a glass of wine in the other and I'm only putting my drinks down to shovel fatty pork into my face.
I'd rather die young and enjoy myself.
