Especially for how well they handled their last great fighting game!...

header.jpg

It was a such a great time never being able to play this fucking game even after the kickstarter and DLC...
Remember it was a 3DS game, then for some reason they thought a big fighting game audience was on vita so cancelled the 3DS version for a vita version, then that version dissappeared as they announced a PS4 and XB1 version and then that also disappeared

Why does that Code of Princess character always look so confused? Every art piece she has a look on her face like she's either very confused or very high

Thank you for taking the time to explain in such detail!

That's indeed some shitty history und much more than I expected :(
No problem. Some people evidently don't know about them and those of us that do have never had all their shitty antics compiled in one place to point people to; so I finally took the time to dig up all the examples I could still find on the internet.

And I'm kind of wondering how the animation is handled. The characters look like 3D models but all the videos I've seen of this game are terribly grainy.

This game and most other modern high-res 2D fighting games are rotoscoped from 3D models, and depending on the budget or expertise of the developer in question, the character's 3D roots can be more or less obvious.

It's for those who enjoyed Asuka 120% Burning Fest, the Sailor Moon Tourney at Evo, still Play Breakers Revenge, and know how to do actual combos in the Neo Geo Double Dragon Fighting game. For those who played Fighters Destiny and Deadly Arts on N64, remember the music of Doomsday Warrior and Tuff'E'Nuff on SNES, or the ads for Mondu's Fight Palace / Tounge of the Fatman / Slaughter Sport. Or those who actually played Battle Fantasia online a few times.

Basically, it's a fighter for those who loved the odd, obscure, and try games for more than "My friend said it's popular!". Arturo on WNF kept on mentioning how much he loved having a game that felt like The ones you played in arcades, when the big stuff was crowded, and you had to wait your turn.

I personally love the fact that you can tell Studio Saizensen is made up of a bunch of old-school fans who are making fighters that do what they remembered. Many of the key frames are so much better than various other popular fighters (And much like something you'd see in, say, Golden Axe: The Duel), the absurdity of many of the actions is right on point (Umehara's Maiden Masher tribute is quite something), and the looseness of many of the character adaptations feels so 90s that it's clearly intentional. It's great that stuff like this can still be made, and games don't just have to turn into near-automated triple A style products all the time, y'know? And the art style which tries it's own hand at making HD 2D sprites is also not bad at all. I definitely appreciate what they're going for. The backgrounds are full of little destructible objects and story-telling situations that many modern fighters seem to have forgotten even existed.

See, that's me, but I feel absolutely nothing for this game.

Ironically, I think all the indie cameos kinda hurt the game--it doesn't feel like an "indie all-stars" game so much as Nicalis forcing a bunch of characters into a Saizensen game because nobody else would work with him.

I'm kinda worried about the lack of reviews for the game still.

The embargo lifts on launch day. We only got review code last night.

I captured a bunch of footage last night -- we are limited to capturing Versus/Training mode only.

Can you comment on how extensive (or not) the training mode options are?

I've watched both WNF tourneys, and I just feel like the Indies are a draw... but not the main point of the game at all. But they also don't feel so loose that it's like "these are the only people who'd work with us" to me, either. The only serious one I'd feel missing is Shante... the others are people I wouldn't have asked for in a fighter like this, but know well enough to appreciate them being here.

I went in with the idea that this would be Code of Princess, Umihara, an indie or 2, and original characters. Everything else has been bonus upon bonus, so it's definitely not distracting personally. Gunvolt's moveset could have been simulated on another character and I would still want to try it, but all the better that it's GUNVOLT doing it, y'know?

I actually like how focused the gameplay looks on things like projectile speed, sneaky set-ups, and baiting burst and reversals. And the characters look unique enough that you can get a bit of an air-dasher here, a long ranger melee there, a solid fireball zoner, and a mixup character, all with easy to digest controls. Should be a game where it's easy to shift between the cast, and feel like you're getting their best, without having to get a PHD in their data.

Cool, thanks for these.

I'm really not bothered about when embargos lift or reviews happen; if I want a game, it's not day 1 or never. If I want reviews, patience will find loads. It's so blatantly easy to get opinions on games now-a-days, and it's not like they depreciate depending on when they occur.

Training mode is the same basic training mode you will find in other games. You have Dummy options, can record/loop actions, set your gauge to a certain amount, etc...

If you want to learn move combinations, the Mission mode does a better job of that because the missions literally ask you to perform a string of moves and combos.

Im just curious how the game looks in handheld mode. All the videos I've seen from all versions (PS4 and Switch at least) seem heavily aliased...not a big fan. Hoping the smaller switch will at least clean up the image a bit.

How is the combat system? I haven't played Saizensen's fighting games before

I'm probably going to buy it, but the roster is pretty underwhelming with all those Code of Princess no-names and original made waifu rubbish.

This looks quite a bit smoother than what I've seen in the promo videos from Nicalis. I dunno what it was, the framerate didn't seem consistent in those, but this looks quite slick. Maybe I'll pick this up after all.

I guess it's for me 'cause I just pre-ordered. Thanks for the thread, TC. Forgot it was so close to release, and needed to jump on that last-minute Prime discount.

I imagine it's a game for fans of Nicalis-published games, given that it's a celebration of them. This seems pretty intuitive. I'm looking forward to it as a fan of Umihara Kawase, Isaac, and Cave Story.

If the idea of Umihara Kawase actually making her way into a fighting game doesn't boggle your mind and intrigue you, we can't be friends.

I'm in for Umihara, not even mentioned in the OP.

One of my favorite game series.

why does shovel knight sound like a jojo character lol

on one hand, it has umihara kawase, on the other hand, literally everything about this game...

I'll probably pass.

edit: also, how do you include Gunvolt but not Copen? Copen is the real cool guy of the series.

This game is going for a simplified system. There's 4 buttons--light, heavy, a special move button and a button for command normals--and all your moves are Smash-style direction+button inputs, with multiple button presses for bigger moves (direction+skill+special for EX moves, for example). There are supers, EX moves, an x-factor/sparking-style comeback state you can activate at low health, etc but it's fairly vanilla on the whole.

edit: in case you don't play fighting games and none of that means anything to you, it's quite simple and much closer to a standard Street Fighter-style game than any of the other anime-style games that are currently popular.
