And that's God damn heart breaking. The Good Feel developed pile of mediocrity that was Warioland Shake It! doesn't cut it for me. It was peak Nintendo shoe horning motion controls into shit that works better with a button. And I never got a chance to play the Treasure developed Wario World though I've heard it's just okay.

No true Warioland is made by any studio other than R&D1. And dog gone it, Wario Land (VB), 3, and 4 deserve to be mentioned amongst the best 2D platformers Nintendo has ever made. And I don't know if you can tell or not, but it's been seventeen years since we got a real one.

Warioland wasn't a humorless, almost borderline soulless experience like what Mario has become. Don't get me wrong, I love Mario, but in my eyes Nintendo been wringing personality from that series ever since Thousand Year Door and Bowser's Inside Story. Games that start with the word "New" not withstanding, the mainline Mario games have never been anything but inspired masterpieces but I can't help but feel like they're fun in the corporate sort of way Disney World is fun.

Warioland bathes in personality. The story might be just as narratively bare-bones but the bones that are present are straight up goofy as fuck. Mario smiles, jumps, and goes woo-hoo. Wario heaves his belly, flexes his biceps, and twirls his mustache. I just love Wario. I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm shitting on Mario and I don't want it to detract from what I'm trying to say. But Wario is the fucking best and I want to pour one out for my homie. His platform games are great because they're more nuanced than simple platforming. I love the puzzles in 3 and 4...

The ranking I give Nintendo characters is as follows.

1. Wario. He's just the best.
2. Donkey Kong. He hoards an enormous amount of bananas and keeps an inventory of every last one. All he wants to do is sleep in his hut, dance, and fuck. He's goofy af and I love him. Expand Dong.
3. Luigi. Because Mario is an emotionless hack. He's the video game character equivilant to a smiley face emogy. Luigi is taller and that makes him better by default, plus he had an actual personality.
4. Samus Aran. Because she does what needs to be done and doesn't afraid of anything.
5. Shiek because there aren't enough cool girl characters in Nintendo games and I'll take all that I can get.

i guess Wario himself was not a good way to sell the games. i've met people who passed on the WL games because of Wario himself.

Is Wario Land more popular in the UK? I rarely see those games mentioned or let's played by US people.

I loved 1-3 as a kid.

I liked them, but they are not nearly at this level. I hope to see a new one some day, Wario is a fun character with cool mechanics.

I think I have loved every Wario Land game I played, but 4 will always have a special place in my heart due to how colorful and goddamn goofy it is. It's really a load of fun and the only bad thing I can point out at it it's that it could have been a tad longer, otherwise it's a plataform classic.

wario land 4 is straight up one of the best platformers I've ever played and definitely oozing with charm and personality. it also helps that it's a beautiful game with fantastic gba spritework and pixel art that really is timeless. if anyome wants a taster of both the gorgeous visuals and the bizarro vibes, google wario land 4 bosses - it's a trip

I cannot recommend that game and franchise enough. don't sleep on it people

since 2D platformers became back in vogue and wario became a staple for the warioware stuff i guess they just never got around to another wario land proper. can live with that but i liked all of them (shout out to the virtual boy game), wouldn't mind another

I really tried to like 3. I can even see why other people do. It just didn't click for me for whatever reason.

Do you think someone who didn't like the slow pace, meandering exploration, and annoying non-death mechanics would like 4? How different is it, if at all?

I never liked Wario games beyond the original one because I don't like how they made you hurry all the time. Was it 4 where you also had to backtrack all the levels with a timer?
I remember playing the Wii title which had an awesome artstyle but I dislike having to shake the wiimote all the time.

The original is one of my favorite games though.

It's extremely different. Wario has a diverse moveset and the pace of the gameplay is much faster.

All Wario Land games have been excellent and I know people would probably want another 2D entry but I think it's time to get a proper 3D Wario game out. Not a B tier game but an Odyssey level production.

Now that Super Mario Odyssey has caught up with the deaths-don't-matter philosophy of Wario Land 2 and 3, it should totally be time to bring the franchise back.

4 is overrated. Backtracking through the levels is not fun at all.

Wario Land 3 is one of the best games in the entire Game Boy library. The graphics are vibrant, the levels distinct, and the gimmick of purposefully getting hurt to change your form is incredibly unique and executed well in the game. I constantly get the urge to replay this game.

Warioland 4 was the first game I played on GBA and loved it. The atmosphere was unlike anything I'd previously experienced in a Nintendo game. It was such a good mix of weird, funny, and creepy. I lost my shit when Spoiled Rotten changed forms during the fight and that was probably the exact moment I realized how unique and special that game was.

Honestly, Wario Land 3 is the only game I've played through more than once from beginning to end, and it's a total masterpiece in level design, exploration, sense of discovery and fun mechanics. Also so forgiving for a non-skilled gamer without being easy.

I'm really fond of it, it's a bit of a shame the series didn't really continue outside of some strange spin-offs like Master of Disguise and Shake It! I love Wario Land, the Virtual Boy entry and 4. I do enjoy 2 and 3 as well, they are fantastic games, I just personally prefer the platform/exploration games a bit more than the puzzle/platform ones.

I really need to play Wario Land 4
I think it holds up quite well.

The only wario game I played was the one on Gameboy. Probably the first Wario Land too.

Hm, this series has been pretty inconsistent for me honestly. The only ones I truly enjoyed were 1, 3, Shake It!, and SML2 (if that counts; obviously doesn't star Wario but it's quite similar to 1). Although Wario had the same core moveset in each, I feel all of his "Land" games play quite different from one another

It was a fine OP until you decided to bust out this list. Besides the order, wtf do you mean Donkey Kong likes to fuck? The current DK doesn't have any kids, so I don't know where you're getting that

That's never going to happen because putting the wario brand on it instead of mario guarantees a fraction of the sales and therefore the game will only have a fraction of the budget.

There will almost certainly never be another internally developed wario land anyway, 2d or 3d, so the argument is pretty pointless.

I think it holds up quite well.

I remember someone wrote a massive critical analysis of Wario Land 4:

In recent weeks we've let you know about an eBook called Game Design Companion: A Critical Analysis of Wario Land 4, in which author Daniel Johnson adopts a thorough, detailed approach to the popular Game Boy Advance game. With over 600 pages that include essays, room-by-room breakdowns and an extensive glossary forming just part of the content, it's an ambitious text that challenges the reader to thing about the games they're playing in a different way.

WL 2 is the best one.

I liked 3, but not that much.

WL 4 was a huge disappointment when released, very short game.

Reviews weren't too hot on it, wasn't a bad game, and since it was released at launch, they mostly praised the graphics.

I don't understand why you chose to remember 4, when 2 and 3 were better games.

Gameboy Wario Land games were awesome. I should play them again someday.
Never played Shake It, looks pretty cool and a friend told me the game is great.

And everybody wants an anime show of Wario Land developed by Production IG.

It's time for another Wario Land game Ninty. How about a remaster of the Virtual Boy game?

Wario Land 1 is my favorite Game Boy game. Would love to play another one someday.

Sadly the DS and Wii interations killed the franchise. One was simply a bad game and the other was good, but it was a 4:3 game in the age of HD consoles. That didn't help in any way.

Cause it came out 17 years ago almost to the day.

Didn't really like Wario Land 1, being pretty slow. Wario Land 2 and 3 are the best portable iterations, with my most favorite of the two being number 2, because Wario Land 3 felt overly complicated with the four treasure chests to find + day and night cycle. Wario Land 4 was amazing but too short.

I hope Wario Ware Gold will sell so Ninty think about a fifth game in the series...

Wario games are basically "we had this new idea but we cant use it in mario because its too crazy - wario doesnt care!" and i love them for that

Except Shake It - and i really wanted to love it thanks to the great art

I love all the Wario Land games and Wario is my favorite Nintendo character, but after Wario Land 4, Wario Land Shake came out and it was very good. A new "standard" 2D platform game would be a great addition to the Switch library.

I'm surprised to read many people don't like WL3, to me, it's the best entry (or maybe the second best after as Shake Dimension/Shake It).
It has a nice level design and interesting Metroidvania mechanics implemented on a 2d platformer.

I am hopeful on seeing a new entry on Switch, we are in the beginning of its life cycle and we have seen already most of the biggest franchises so there is plenty of space now for smaller series.
