Mostly? Did you get a consensus ?

This post is shameful.

Many people simply hated the bait and switch after falling in love with Snake. The twist was far more in line with what constitutes an anti-consumer move moreso than a lot of things that get accused of being so on this site
woah, no. The Raiden twist perfectly encapsulates the game and it's themes.

Probably one of the best examples of games-as-art I can think of.

Anti-consumer? Wtf?

Raiden switch anti-consumer? Do you want your money back 17 years later? Lol

Loved the trailer, love the game and it really was an amazing preview.

I remember being so excited about that trailer. It was 100MB(!) and took all day to download. This was at work mind you...a video game publisher with pretty decent dl speeds for the time. It was coming down in the sub-50kb/sec range. I even remember commenting to a co-worker, how can graphics look any better than this? Where do we go from here?

Oh hey, the trailer shows glimpses Raiden. I was always under the impression that his character's entire existence was kept secret before release, rather than just the fact that he was the main playable character
Kojima definitely put Raiden in any of the original MGS2 trailers.
In the video description it also says:

I wasn't arguing about whether he was a good character or fit the themes.

They ran ads with Snake and then dropped Raiden on players' laps after they forked over the money . That's why people were (rightly) pissed

It definitely was. It's still there on the internet. It was incredible to see the amount of shit Raiden got just for existing.
I'm sure there probably were people saying things like 'gayyy' etc, but saying the majority of people who hated Raiden were homophobes is... wow.

Maybe you loved Raiden. That's great. For me, I felt cheated for obvious, indisputable and non-homophobic reasons.

I never saw this trailer prior to MGS2 release, but, in those days, nearly anything MGS2 relates that was put out looked truly next gen. PS2 was doing well, but seeing the things this game did always blew me away compared to other games at the time. MGS2 was among some of the greatest games ever made, and everything about it at the time (and now) is evident of that, I feel.

Edit - and fwiw, I was never pissed or upset or anything about the Raiden switch. It was all a part of the game, and it all played the same anyway, so it was all good in my hood.

17 years ago, where did it all go? :-(

I am very similar to you OP - an equal attachment to that trailer!

My experience - There was a particular PlayStation magazine in the U.K. at the time (I forget which one it was) and one of the issues gave away a free VHS featuring the MGS2 trailer. I watched it almost too many times, hype building to astronomical levels. Loved the new recording of the MGS theme that played over it too.

Remember the buzz of later getting the demo with ZOE and playing it over and over again - got a buzz out of things as simple as being able to look around a corner when standing against it, and getting the guards to give up when jumping out at them.

That leap from PS1 to PS2 - just nothing like it.

I had a similar experience with FF10 as well. A demo disc came with the PS1 version of FF6 featuring some Besaid gameplay. It all seemed so vibrant and....alive!!! Great times.

Those were the days! Don't forget RE: Veronica X on PS2 came with DMC demo, GOATs of the PS2 era.

This was one of my favorite trailers as well along with MGS3 TGS 2003 trailer

This was my first thought, and I'm there with you. I think I was in tears or something. I probably get emotional just by looking at that beautiful trailer.

I actually just got finished watching the last Death Stranding video before this and another thread. Funny.

This music man, my eyes are getting watery, it's happening! hahha.

The graphics for this game at the time was nuts. Good times, I remember it took me so long to load the video on my dial up internet.

Why do you think Kojima implemented Raikov Raidenovitch, a gay man looking exactly like Raiden, in which Snake can either knock him or kill him before taking his clothes ?

Kojima even had this to say "Also, whether you knock out Raikov or kill him is indication of your love towards Raiden. I'm guessing it'll be a swift death for him in Europe."

It's not "probably", there were indeed large swathes of player who openly displayed homophobic remarks against him to the point that it even reached back to Japan. That you hate him for different reasons doesn't dispute this fact, nor does it put you into this camp, but it's no use trying to rewrite this history.

Don't distort what I'm saying. I simply expressed my own opinion. The first paragraph is me calling your "majority" into question. It's a ridiculous claim.

It's an amazing trailer. You know what I like even better though? MGS4's reveal trailer at TGS 2005. So good.

I feel that MGS3 was MGS2 without the flaws and then some.

Some of the plant level design is kind of unfair as well to the point of being not fun, in terms of sneaking. Cell D and E come to mind.

The big shell in general wasn't a very interesting in my opinion, especially when compared to what proceeded and followed it.

The boss fights are really good though. The tanker section is a lot better not simply because of snake, the level design is a lot better and more interesting as a whole.

Why was it polarizing? I'm not old enough to have played it when it had come out, so I wouldn't know. I loved it when I played it about a year ago. It had an even better story that MGS, and it improved upon the great gameplay introduced in the MSX games (unlike MGS). The only downside is Raiden, but his character still filled a pretty important role.
My main memory of the reaction to MGS2 is people totally losing it over Raiden.

Fans got insanely worked up about being "tricked" into playing as a different protagonist.

i'll always remember EGM going in pretty hard on it during their review, but still giving it like straight 9.5's. I appreciate the game much more now than I did back then, probably my favorite in the franchise.

Which was awesome. I loved getting MGS2 and being completely blown away that I wasn't even playing as Snake again. I loved Snake as a kid but Raiden acted like the angsty annoying dick I was when I was a tween. Not to mention I pretty much had his hair too.

I also loved the bait and switch with Halo 2 when you started to play as the Arbiter. I thought it was cool as fuck.
lmao I hated both of these.

Sorry OP but the coming back of MGS in MGS3 after many claimed that MGS lost its throne to Splinter Cell and otehr stealth games, just killed the competetion especially with E3 2004 trailer which is one of the most iconic trailers in history.

And of course it's BIG BOSS. No other Snake or other copy could close to any of his fingers.
I don't need to define The Boss.

Raiden was the main polarizing factor. I can't understate how upset people were about the bait-and-switch surprise at the time. Snake was an absolutely beloved character, and Raiden was largely detested.

Aside from that, the game was also criticized for being overly verbose in its writing and overly reliant on codec conversations compared to the original.

My main memory of the reaction to MGS2 is people totally losing it over Raiden.

Fans got insanely worked up about being "tricked" into playing as a different protagonist.

That sounds super weird too me. I would have loved that twist if I were around for it. Having your expectations defied makes stories way more interesting.

Thanks for the explanation.

I guessed this would be it from the title, and for sure great stuff! One of the best series ever agreed. I really enjoyed the trailers for MGS3, 4, and V as well.

OP, are you me? :O I remember it being the only time I ever let my computer connected to the Internet overnight, since we used dial up and it wasn't actually a flat rate (I woke in the middle of the night, like 4 or 5 AM, to disconnect and minimize costs). Pre-broadband world was so weird.

Came here expecting something insufferably hyperbolic and I was right as well.
Are you referring to my account of the impact that the trailer had on my as detailed in the OP? I assure you I was not trying to be hyperbolic. That trailer actually inspired me to get into video editing and cutting my own trailer-style videos together. It had a huge impact on me and gives me nostalgic chills even now revisiting it.

I don't think it's hyperbolic at all to say that, at the time, this was arguably the best videogame trailer produced up to that point. MGS2 trailers set a new standard that the series would continue to uphold going forward. MGS trailers have always been events, and that all started here.

The Saboteur has similar music, that shit was dope.

This trailer just reminds how unfortunate it was that they had to axe the MGS theme music due to legal issues.

That crescendo towards the end gets me goosebumps almost every time.

The first E3 trailer will always be king in my eyes. But damn, I never tire of hearing that theme song. Easily the best tune in any game, ever. So good.

I think I read somewhere about Kojima being impressed with Arnie being a good terminator twist. Probably why he did this with MGS2.

I remember many people also not liking him because he "looked gay". I think he was semi naked at some point in the game which made some idiots uncomfortable, and his "feminine" look didn't help.

I never liked Metal Gear very much but I always thought Raiden looked very badass with his katana.

I know, right? I missed it dearly in MGS4 and beyond. It's so weird to think that Gregson-Williams effectively stole that tune from an obscure Russian composition. Like... really? He's a professional who has worked on numerous big films. It's just so odd, but the two songs are just way too similar for it to be a coincidence.

It wasn't Gregson-Williams composition, though. It was TAPPY who originally made the theme for MGS1 unless I'm mistaken.

Still, the theme would've been so useful during the cutscene prior to the final boss fight of MGS4.

Gregson-Williams only copies his own work.

It's probably the first videogame trailer I ever obsessed over and started going to forums to see what people we're saying about it.

It's the game that really made me fall in love with MGS and Kojima. It was a great experience at the time. As nonsensical as the story often was it was also gripping as hell.

You know, I almost included a comment about that. You're right, there was vocal concern about having to play as a "girly" character. Lol gamers.

In the end Raiden ended up being awesome. Metal Gear Rising and MGS4 added a lot to his character, but I still think he brought a worthwhile dimension to MGS2.

It's funny. I remember my reaction to it, and it was neither "whoa, these graphics are impossible", nor "whoa, this is amazing"

It was "Oh yay, another gritty game for gritty dudes. Can we get some color?"

The color bit especially.

But I'm very, very clearly not even remotely the target audience. It was 2001 - gritty shooters (and that is what MGS2 looked like to me) weren't exciting in the slightest. It was the year of Black and White, of Myst III, of the Baldur's Gate II expansion. Now THOSE were exciting.
And also way more colorful.

It's not a bad game, it's just perfectly encapsulaitng one branch of games that makes some parts of the game playing public salivate - and the other part shrug in confusion. Which in itself is rather interesting, I find. The split is deep.

I remember 2001 E3 and this trailer completely jamming traffic in the corner of Konami's booth where the huge big screen was that played it.

Konami had some ace PR people back then too that are now VPs of PR at other game publishers today
