I was very disappointed by this game...it´s not bad, but after all the glowing reviews and my own expectations for it I found that I wasn´t having any fun playing it and was actually forcing myself to get through it. I suddenly stopped playing one day and haven´t found any reason to go back to it, so I can´t recommend it.
In short, yes.
The game LOOKS gorgeous, but isn't really that fun to play at all, and the story progresses at a slow pace with nothing really interesting happening. It's like being an adult and watching a show for 5-year olds. Sure it's flashy and cute, but at the end of the day there's nothing there to interest you. Not only is the minute-to-minute gameplay sort of boring (in terms of controlling Owlboy, etc) - there's nothing interesting about the level design. The puzzles are overly simple, the bosses are easy, and it doesn't have a satisfying gameplay loop or anything like that.
It's just boring.
Thanks, guys. Seems like not buying it last night was the right choice, after all.

New content for Battle Chef Brigade this August 28th
Gotta love these lads.
I'll very probably do a second playthrough next month.

Most prominently, Rocket League DLC and the expansions for Darkest Dungeon go on sale when the base game does.

Shantae Half Genie Hero, Darkest Dungeon, Rocket League, etc

ahh right, Rocket League ... forgot about that since I don't care about that and skip past it in the lists^^ ...but also didn't remember the Shantae and DD DLCs being on sale, huh.

Annoyingly curious that the exact DLC I'd been interested in (FE Warriors [also FE Echoes on 3DS] and M+R KB (have since bought the retail Gold Edition) are the ones that skipped every sale opportunity.

I think Bad North is fun for a couple of runs (3-5), but not more. Unless you get something for reaching the end, there is no meta progression. Campaigns also run for too long, while having a very slow early game, which means that you really have to slog through the first islands to get to the challenging stuff and more troops and skills.

A fast forward button might have made it more palatable, because on early islands you're usually just waiting for the boats to arrive and not doing much, but there isn't one, unfortunately.

Usually, roguelights give players a fun, randomised power curve that makes every run different; challenge and campaigns that can be finished within an hour or so once you're good enough to actually finish them. Bad North campaigns take too long to get going, the game is often not challenging enough and it takes too long to finish. There's also not enough variety in there, because the players decided what weapons to get through upgrades, so the only random thing in the power curve is what items you find on particular islands and I didn't feel like they really changed the way I played.

So for me it's lacking the things that make other roguelights great.
Those are some really well written impressions, thanks

I keep forgetting about Sky Rogue. That one looks like a ton of fun, and I think I read it has a decent amount of gameplay variety to it, too.

It's fun for a bit then gets super repetitive. I never beat it. Always died around stage 6 I think. Eventually you unlock cool weapons... Then you stop.. then it's just a grindfest of course shooting the same enemies over and over

OK, so when the hell is Penguin Wars coming to the eShop in the US? The physical edition came out yesterday. This is getting really dumb.

It was due to the way the bundesliga rights were sold. SI could only have full bundesliga rights for one game.

It seems like things have changed and they can now have rights on multiple games

Thanks for the explanation. Bundesliga has always been my favorite European league, sans Bayern.

DLC? On Switch? Got any examples?
Mario + Rabbids also gets discounted DLC with the Gold edition being discounted. I bought it with a 45% discount around E3.

That'S not DLC; that's the full game in its "complete" edition at a discount. The Season Pass has never been on sale (I checked every time).

This is a bit disheartening. Have you played the original?

I have not, no.

I noticed you just posting about this game, and forgot to reply to you. I'd maybe wait to read some reviews and other impressions before jumping in immediately, whenever it releases. I bought the physical edition from Dispatch Games, which is really a nice Nicalis level of quality. It's just too bad I have minimal interest to put the cart back in. It was just a dull, unituitive, poorly designed game visually, kinda mess.

I hope I can read some other reviews and impressions myself, that would illustrate to me otherwise, as at this point, in just not interested in playing anymore.

Edit: Here's a review I found.

http://michibiku.com/review-penguin-kun-gira-gira-wars-roll/

I don't necessarily agree with the functional aspects of this review, from what I've experienced but the overall presentation is more garish, and overboard for me, than cohesive and fun, and flowing in a way that feels functional. The graphic style also feels a bit jarring, with somewhat PS2/3 era models as the players, and attendees being more bouncing and stretched out 2D stills hopping up and down. The visual package feels more chaotic and imploding, than streamlined, understandable, and functional.

I'd maybe watch some videos, to get an understanding of load times/gray screens in between, and how the visual style suits you.

Say did we ever get any additional games announced for the SNK 40th anniversary collection, or are we still at the original 13?

I've seen the Shantae DLC on sale for sure so I checked Google to see if there was mention of it and I found this tweet from Wayforward.

The DLC I want that has never gone on sale is for Pinball FX3. They've had multiple sales on every other platform this year, including the Jurassic Park tables they released this year. I have no idea why they skip Switch entirely, it's not like the JP tables came at a later date than the other platforms.

Seems like publishers have been trying to train us for years to buy the ultimate edition from the beginning cause the dlc will never go on sale by itself. I know I've bought the base game and then way later the ultimate edition cause it's cheaper than buying just the dlc

Just had a weird bug in Unexplored where the game failed to generate a floor and then when I tried to quit the game and load that save, it brought me back to an old save when I was on the second floor. I didn't even know it kept periodic saves rather than just overwriting them as most roguelikes do.

I need to finally check the game out when I have time tonight.

I thought Shovel Knight was mediocre so I'm growing tired of him being the token indie rep in all these games but thankfully the roster has some bizarre and deep cuts I can stick to instead.

I want to play as Gunvolt. I really like his games. Plus, he's the only character I'm familiar with for the most part.

Gunvolt has a nice variety of moves in this game. Three different specials, can charge his special meter, and has long-range and close-range attacks. Actually uploading footage of Gunvolt/Lina right now, haha.

You owe it to yourself to play Cave Story and especially Umihara Kawase. It's pretty much my favorite pure platforming series.

Ah, yes. I know the characters in Cave Story. ha. Silly me! I should just try the game out and see who all I recognize as I don't have a good recollection of who's all in the game! :)

Looks like 3D Mugen.

Is that Isaac's stage? Where's all the poop?

Isaac reminds me of one of those hidden easter egg characters in old Capcom arcade fighters, like Roll and Anita. There's a real lack of cohesion visually. Smash Bros really does a good job of trying to make all the different characters look more natural standing next to each other.

I'm also not feeling these character models in general. It looks a lot like higher resolution versions of those Code of Princess models, which makes sense I guess. Again, spoiled by ArcSys's amazing cel shading.

It's a really weird game. Capcom Fighting Jam vibes.

Personally, I'm pretty much never going to buy a 2D fighter that costs more than $15 on Switch outside Smash. The whole appeal for me would be handheld mode and that's a no-go with JoyCons. If I'm going to play on my TV I'll just get the games on PS4 where they'll look better and have a bigger playerbase.

Now, 3D fighters should work just fine with the JoyCons, I've never felt those games demanded arcade sticks or dpads. But we're not getting any 3D fighters on Switch, which sucks. No Tekken 7, no Soul Calibur 6, no Dead or Alive 6... hell, I'd be happy to get Dead or Laive 5 Last Round, the F2P version would be a great boon for the Switch audience.

Fuck that, I'd kill for a Switch port of last gen's Soul Calibur 2 HD. It would be amazing because we'd finally have all 3 of the guest characters in the same game!

Hopefully David Sirlin's Fantasy Strike game turns out good. Meanwhile I'm sticking with my Vita for handheld fighters.

Game of the Day

xmaidqvgru7cfpxvjsli4axfy7.jpg

The world is over.

But it's not quite over for you... at least, not yet. And now that you've got thousands of tonnes of locomotive at your disposal, you've got the definite advantage over the infected hordes. This is The Final Station.

The real question is whether or not you'll help the survivors get to their destinations.... or let them die and loot their bodies. Sometimes people can be more trouble than they're worth.
  • A post-apocalyptic adventure about travelling a dying world on a train.
  • A story that goes through 5 chapters, with large inhabited stations at the end of each one.
  • Infected are ready to stop your progress whenever you exit the train to look for supplies.
  • Maintain your train in operating condition and craft valuable items from the resources you scavenge.
  • Don't expect to shoot your way through the crowds of infected. Supplies and ammo are very limited.
  • Pick up survivors along the way, gaining perks (and hindrances) for your troubles.
  • Scavenge for loot at stations and craft useful supplies.
  • Sell your loot at inhabited stations for useful upgrades to your weapons.

On the switch news section i just saw a EU article that says Hollow knight is with 34% discount on the eshop.

But when i go to the eshop, out of curiosity, the game is still full price.
If this is real i guess the game will be on discount when the eshop updates today.

I guess they want to recover the top sellers first place back from Dead Cells. xD
Didn't expected to see a sale so soon of a top seller indie.
Maybe it's because the new dlc is out today i think.

How is it possible that Kero Blaster runs at sub-native res? Or maybe it's not sub-native res but some kind of scaling but it definitely looks weird to me, especially in the menus.

I feel like they've been a week behind on the Hamster Neo Geo games in the last two PR announcements.

Didn't Real Bout come out last Thursday with Crossed Swords out today?

Should mean Football Frenzy is next week and we're due for the announcement of the next batch of Neo Geo titles soon.

Would be great to get Baseball Stars 2 before the World Series.

I played The Flame in the Flood extensively when it launched on the Switch and would be happy to answer any questions about it in detail. I think it's a game that is often misunderstood and perhaps underrated because it flows so differently from other entries in the survival genre.

The Flame in the Flood has three modes: standard, hard, and endless. (I don't remember the exact in-game names for them off the top of my head.)

Standard and Hard are both a linear story mode, although this isn't obvious at first. There is a semi-fixed sequence of biomes (although the resource/landing points within each biome are randomized each time), pre-designed mid-point sequences, and a definite ending. Standard mode lets you restart from the last biome (chapter) when you die, although if you're so resource-starved that you can't really continue, you can forgo that option and start over from the beginning. Hard mode has higher resource drain and full permadeath: if you die, you die. (Endless, of course, is endless.)

The progression between runs works like this: there are three separate "zones" in your inventory (backpack, dog, raft). The dog only has a few slots (six, I think) but stays with you at all times when you are running around, and if you die and restart a new file, everything in the dog slots passes to your next character. So you only ever start with a maximum of six inherited items, though if you make it into the late game, these could be crafted items or rare resources that can give you a big head start.

As far as difficulty goes: it's important to note that The Flame in the Flood is not the kind of survival game where you settle in, amass huge upgrades, build an impenetrable defence, and blast everything in sight in the endgame like it's an ARPG. It's tuned to have slight, incremental progression that always keeps you on your toes and low on resources. This is done in several ways:

- Menu screens (inventory management) don't stop time; you have to be aware of your surroundings when rummaging through your backpack. (Probably the single hardest adjustment for new players.)

- Inventory slots are very tight and you can't play like a pack-rat; you need to know when to leave raw materials in stacks instead of cluttering your slots with crafted items, when to leave a surplus behind when you need your slots for other emergencies, and what not to take when you're scavenging. You also need to know when not to enter a zone or pick a fight: sometimes you'll enter an area and make the judgement call that going in further will cost you more than you will gain, and the right move is to walk right back out.

- Difficult enemies never get easier. Combat is mostly about indirectly laying traps, and even when you work up to a bow and arrow you'll never have more than a dozen arrows or so at any given time, and aiming is not at all point-and-click. Killing things is slow and methodical by design and a lot of players used to action games will find it clumsy. It's not a defect in the controls—it's that most games set you up with the expectation that weapon progression is sharp and noticeable, whereas here, there are very few enemy types and they are all lethal threats from beginning to end.

TFitF is a great game but it demands a certain mindset, much more about managing extreme scarcity than progressing in power. I like to describe it as a survival game where you never fully escape the early, early-game phase that is all about picking up sticks and stones. You are under early-game pressure all the way to the end. There's no base-building or super-boss phase like Don't Starve, and you never dominate the game-world around you. It's all about playing cautiously and learning to avoid emergencies that drain your medical supplies or raft parts.
Oh! thanks i didn't know your dog's backpack was carrying over next game.
