lol I think you are putting too much stock into that. Switch is no Wii and To say that neither PS4 or Xbox will come close to that is honestly laughable considering both companies will be offering some predictable bundles and/or deep cuts.
putting too much stock into past sales data....?

so what does one put stock into if not data

If The World Ends With You Ends Up being the second best selling game in November after Red Dead Square Enix is put on notice that action RPGs aren't always viewed as superior.
Isn't November Pokémon month? I mean I know Hype isn't huge around here for it, but it's still friggin' Pokémon.

Switch is my new favorite console and Octopath is perfect for it. I'm 80 hours into the game and I'm still surprised that I haven't grown tired of it yet, despite the generic equipment system and predictable storylines. The game just keeps wowing me with new things all the time for hours and hours, something not many games can do (especially not JRPGs).

The future is bright for Nintendo.

I hope they give Octopath Traveler 2 a higher budget, and put some more confidence behind it. They must have learned from their mistake with Bravely Second, right? Bravely Second did all right, but it definitely wasn't the right move to expand the series and cement it as a stable franchise.

I keep seeing this sentiment and don't really get it.
Budget wise, the world was bigger than I originally anticipated. There's a decent amount of voice acting.
Graphically, there's an eff of a lot more going on that I noticed at first. Some of the techniques they use are a tier or 2 above what I thought.
Monster design variety seems in line

The main complaint is the disconnected story among the 8 and little party interaction.
That's not a budget concern, but more the creative direction.
I'm not sure what people want when they're asking for "more budget"

literally no chance this happens

I agree. 4th place for November would be the "realistic" unbelievable sales position.

All the big games except battlefield, cod, darksiders, valkyria and pokemon abandoned October and November. If Switch owners are as into high quality rpgs as I think they are then only pokemon and BF can compete and they will beat it out.

I think cod will underperform a lot because it has to prove it is worth charging for the box against fortnite and it still has to compete with Red Dead and BF.

Yeah this has been confusing me too. Are people talking about things like monster Sprite animations? Or dungeon design? I think those are more design choices than lack of budget.

Maybe the dungeon aesthetic variety could improve with a higher budget but I don't see it affecting much else.

How did smash do when it released on the Wii? Didn't it increase the next couple months of NPD? Or was that because the Wii was super supply constrained?

You're right, it is October. I'll revise that. I actually see it getting 4th place for the month. It would be funny though if it could pull off second.

This is literally impossible. Here are some of the games launching in October:

Red Dead Redemption 2
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
Battlefield V
Super Mario Party
Assassin's Creed Odyssey
Forza Horizon 4
WWE 2k19
Soulcalibur 6

(though due to how NPD's tracking period works, a couple of these probably won't see their debuts in October...I think Forza will show in September's results, for example, though it will still sell more units than TWEWY in October's results)

Even a game like Mega Man 11 is going to handily outsell TWEWY.

This one is more of a bonus question haha, but if you can: Is BotW outperforming Odyssey? Anecdotally it often seems so...
You don't need to know the LTD sales to know how the two has matched up in the months since Odyssey launched.

Odyssey is sure to be overtaken by Zelda and Mario Kart eventually if it hasn't already.

Did Jason say the game was gonna bomb? I thought he just didn't like it. Why everybody keep bringing him up

He is famous of being petty on game that he dont like, the best example was how he said that XC2 fans will be exposed when better Jrpg come to switch. So it is a hell funny to see most jrpg he hate suceed.( not like jason had good taste jrpg anyway lol. Suikoden no Kuni 2. "Shudder")

OK what is going on with GTA V? I think it's mind-boggling how a game originally released in 2013, is still charting so high today.

Has this ever happened before with other games?

Rockstar pretty much skipped this whole generation without a GTA game on purpose because GTA V is still selling like crazy. GTA VI will probably be a 2023 game at this point!

Of course anecdotal evidence is not the most compelling...

But I knew the Switch would be successful when friends started buying it. They would have NEVER considered buying a wiiU.

Smash on Switch will be huge. Not limited by WiiU. The Wii had a stigma with some gamers. GameCube and N64 weren't super successful.

Ultimate will be the first time the franchises potential will be truly unlocked.
Yep, crazy when you think about it. Nintendo having a home system that's both successful AND super appealing to core gamers hasn't happened since.... the SNES?

It's gonna do fucking wonders for Metroid too.

Well...
Regarding metroid i think the direction of the game will matter. Anything other M like and people will avoid it like the plague. Metroid needs it's botw like modernizing

Hey, MatPiscatella , the charts suggests me that Crash is doing considerably better on XB than Switch. Am I totally wrong!?

Not from my reading. PUBG, just below Crash on the xbox listing, yet didn't chart on the overall. Neither did Splatoon 2 which was just above Crash on the Switch listing.

....EDIT upon more thought...

Then again, we know Crash (NS) sold less than Captain Toad (NS) which placed 14th. So we know had Crash only come out on Switch, it could have charted below 14th.

I can probably infer from this that the X1 version of Crash had to make up the highest percentage of sales to boost it from >14th place to 2nd.

I'm not sure if PC sales fit into this either.

The battle between Switch and PS4 in the end of the year will be very interesting. Except for December which I see Switch being the best-selling, November and October are quite unpredictable.

Hopefully we get some more Nintendo-published games soon that aren't Wii U ports.

Octopath was published by Nintendo, even if regional and it's original. Later it's Xenoblade 2 The Torna Country (Stand alone physical DLC) and Labo vol 3 in September, Super Mario Party in October, Let's Go in November and Smash in December. So it's that.

NSMBU wil probably be announced for this year in some of those months and maybe other titles as well in the september direct.

dropped the ball hard on the system so Nintendo had to pick it up for them.

Same as Wii, same as Switch.

Indies been noticing though....

Oh yeah absolutely. Metroid definitely will depend on the direction it takes.

My post was assuming that Prime 4 will of or near the quality of the first three just for the sake of comparing how platforms impact sales. Should've mentioned that, my bad.

Hell, I think even a simple remaster of the Trilogy would actually sell very well and bring in lots of new fans to the series.

Basically, if there's a system that Metroid would thrive on, it's the Switch easily over the Wii (casual audience) or GameCube (underperformance)

Well, if considering only North America, the 64 would be that last system. And I would put the Wii as well.

This is insane considered Octopath Traveler is a traditional "J" RPG. Well deserved and it goes to show good games will sell well.

What is more insane is the number of people wishing this game to fail even before its launch.
The following downplay and salty responses are priceless.

First we have that the game is 2D with low budget mobile graphics so it's not worth 60 dollars nobody in the right mind will buy it's going to bomb hard, then after launcg because Switch has no games so anything will sell gangbuster regardless. The logic.

See third parties, this is what you do to sell some games on the Switch. It's a guaranteed win.

Release a good, platform exclusive title, and just watch it blow up. Have it appeal to gamers with underrepresented genres.

We have seen it with:

Super Bomberman R
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
And now:
Octopath.

It's a guaranteed win at this point.
Yup.

I've been saying it before and after the Switch launched. I'm sure others have too.

3rd party exclusives is what ppl should look for, want for the Switch. That was an underrated pro about the Wii. Wii U also, too bad console sales didn't help.

i love the Wii, but let's not pretend it's appealing to core gamers on the level of the Switch.

I saw this statement a while ago - The majority of the Wii audience bought a Wii for Wii Sports, while the Switch audience bought one for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Not sure what people want these companies to do when their games can't run on the system. It's 2007 all over again where everyone says they're pissing money away when it was nintendo who decided to make a super underpowered system.
