Kinda related to software and hardware sales, but why did metroid prime 4 suddenly shoot up to the number 3 best seller on amazon

Was a new trailer shown or something? Because it wasn't even in the top 100 a week ago

Amazon's 20% pre-order discount program is about to end, so most of the big upcoming Switch first party games jumped up the charts.

It would seriously make more sense than just dropping the old game like that.
2D Mario is literally their biggest and most reliable franchise, it's like the one franchise where if it appears on a machine it's instant best sales performance on the machine.
No need to talk about SMB1 to SMW, but NSMB is one of biggest game on DS, NSMBW is one of the biggest games on ultra popular Wii, even on WiiU it's one of the best selling game!
Squandering the thirst for 2D Mario on a port of an old game is bad business, while it's not as easy as it can seem to make a full game of fresh new 2D Mario (as Mario Maker and NSMB2 showed) it's still way less costly and easier to make than pretty much any other of their big properties

Pretty much everything you said here also applies to Mario kart and that seemed to turn out all right. Id say if we do get NSMBU this year then we'll almost certainly get Mario maker next year. That seems to have the 2D Mario fan base pretty well served.

Whoa. I know it was a fairly slow month but I didn't expect Octopath to beat the evergreens (GTA, Mario Kart, CoD, etc). Crazy cool for the Octopath team.

I did not realize how much traction my comment on Smash Ultimate would get

RIP my notifications when it doesnt launch as big as I think it will come December

I don't really think that prediction is too out there. Smash bros is set for a massive launch, the only question is how big. IMO biggest ever exclusive launch is still in play.

Instead of having a NSMBU port this year, I think it's better to have a new game early next year and release a new mario maker in fall 2019, along with MP4, new pokemon

Your prediction isn't terribly different from what I expected anyway, it's just that you having more data than the rest of us adds more weight to the idea.

Also congrats on parenthood! How does it feel?

People are surprised a very hyped game for a very hyped console in a fairly slow release year (for Switch) in a month where nooothing came out...

...was number 1?

I mean, it's great for the genre, but I'm not seeing the "surprising" part here. Typically, how high GTA is on the NPD correlates pretty strongly without how poor the software lineup is?

Also GTA V has no legs anymore, it's built a statue at this point and won't leave the top 10.

Wow at Octopath rising to heaven. It's such a lovely game. And such a rare occurrence that the greater populace agrees with my tastes :P And I bought it digitally, so I didn't even get to contribute to this number.

Think it could be more but that would depend on Spider-Man bundles and Pro .
If the PS4 Pro supply issue still stands during August, it may just do 200k. And if Switch maintains summer momentum, it will do another 260k and closes the gap by 60k. It all really depends on ps4 supplies and switch momentum.

I think the ps4 supply issues are because of 2 things, the 500 million edition, since it's just 50k worldwide, they will probably only ship 15k to US in August. And the next thing are spiderman bundles releasing in september which way more will be shipped to US.

GTAV curses and shakes first in air at being robbed first place by Octopath Traveler. But my question is when the fuck did I stumble into a universe where a traditional JRPG and a 5 year old game top a list on NPD.

Oh this just makes me so happy. Well deserved and impressive to see Octopath number 1, and it just lifts my spirit to see Nintendo doing so well again. Bring on more games! Gotta be a nintendo direct soon!

Switch is ~300K behind PS4. At most I would expect the gap to be ~400K by October. That can easily be erased by November and December.

I keep hearing different numbers and even still, Spider-Man and RDR2 about to drop. I'd imagine the gap will be larger than just a 100K unit increase if we go off of your numbers. Also, the PS4 won't just stop selling in November and December.

My expectations for Switch US November and December hardware are 1.5m-2m and 3m respectively lol

Not that surprising. Most people who wanted it bought it digitally over the past year. The physical release was just another option to get some physical collector purchases (like me) and double dippers.

Sega handled physical copies of Plus as a standard release though. No Xbox One physical release in Japan aside, they didn't really skimp on expenses--Mania Plus wasn't designated under a limited print run, sold through a exclusive retailer / platform / region, or given a premium pricetag. If anything, they added bells and whistles like the artbook, reversible cover and (in Japan) the game's soundtrack. If Sega intended for Plus to sell solely towards collectors / enthusiasts, then they would had handled its release like they did with the Mania Collector's Edition from last year ($70 and IIRC, only available with select retailers).

Besides, I also suspect Mania Plus not appearing on the NPD charts is also a byproduct of Sonic sales in general going to shit this generation. Mania is the only Sonic game this gen that has even been confirmed to have sold past one million worldwide in the first place (and is the first Sonic game to do so since Generations), and was sandwiched between poorly-received games like the Boom tie-ins and Forces as it is.

If we included digital for Nintendo, Octopath Traveler would be July's best-selling game.
Wow!

Think it could be more but that would depend on Spider-Man bundles and Pro .
It's not like Switch will sell less because more Pro's are available. Even a 500K gap before November isn't hard to overcome. Switch will have an insane December this year, last year's performance showed that.

A JRPG, GTA, Crash, Zelda, and Mario Kart make up the top 5, we're in the 90's again!

Mind blown that Far Cry 5 is the biggest seller so far and that GTA V is still selling that well.

Thanks. Its honestly been amazing. Other than the fact I've almost forgotten what sleep is

Ah yeah that part is fun, I was just there a couple months ago.

Slowly but surely you'll start getting more sleep. Emphasis on the slowly part if your baby is anything like my daughter.

We saw Switch sell 1.5M in December last year. That is peak PS4 and XB1 performance and it was accomplished in the first holiday season. It's selling much more than that this year.

PS4 isn't going to see anywhere close to that this holiday. Nintendo consoles always see crazy increases going into December and November will not be a slouch with Pokemon.

True and it don't look like Sony being aggressive this year with price cuts .
Going to be interesting to see what Sony do in last 2 months of this year .

Well the last game the producers did that reached 1 million, got a sequel greenlit on a even lower budget, that was bravely default and it's sequel bravely second.
I hope they give Octopath Traveler 2 a higher budget, and put some more confidence behind it. They must have learned from their mistake with Bravely Second, right? Bravely Second did all right, but it definitely wasn't the right move to expand the series and cement it as a stable franchise.

Hot damn, it feels so good to see a JRPG topping NPD, massive congratulations to SE and Nintendo.

Fantastic to see GOW still charting in its fourth month, SSM and Sony fully deserves this success.

Did not expect detroit to chart. Very impressed :D

If The World Ends With You Ends Up being the second best selling game in October after Red Dead Square Enix is put on notice that action RPGs aren't always viewed as superior.

I think Sony will be aggressive around Black Friday again this year with a $199 PS4. It could take November again, though I think Switch will put up a much bigger fight this year.

I- Is this for real?
Are my eyes decieving me? A traditional, turn-based, 2D-like top-down view JRPG at 60$ is NA's best selling game?

I got nothing but to congratulate Nintendo and Square for this amazing achievement! Even if I don't particularly like this game.

Also lol at GTlegs and Nintendo evergreens.

lol I think you are putting too much stock into that. Switch is no Wii and To say that neither PS4 or Xbox will come close to that is honestly laughable considering both companies will be offering some predictable bundles and/or deep cuts.

In December? All the bundles and price cuts in the world from MS and Sony aren't going to matter. Smash Bros. Ultimate will drive hardware sales like crazy. Not to mention December is almost always Nintendo's strongest month of the year and when they have successful hardware, they dominate the month, even without a game like Smash Bros. The Switch being different from Wii is completely irrelevant to this point.

OK what is going on with GTA V? I think it's mind-boggling how a game originally released in 2013, is still charting so high today.

Has this ever happened before with other games?
