Let's go not having a big impact as the mainline pokemon titles at this moment.
Not surprised, the game seems to have turned a lot of long time fans off.
I also don't think it's the large leap people were hoping for when it finally jumped from handheld to console. Not even talking about graphics either. It seems kind of scaled back in a lot of ways

Octopath is holding well enough for the genre. Keep in mind JRPGs are notorious for huge drops in their second month so dont expect an overly impressive result.

Do you know if supply has been an issue for the game like in Japan and the EU? Was it supply-constrained in any way?

Thank you and Mat for taking the time to answer our questions. Very generous of you as always.

Nice! Good to hear, since you were a lot more vague in this other thread on DQXI's topic, as you were only talking about websites and forums impressions.
It's a pretty story-heavy game, so that's great if you're already enjoying it like this.
I'm definitively losing a lot of details that O love in stories but I'm doing it for nostalgia... I will start again when I got my copy in September.

I wanted to import the 3DS version without owning a 3DS just because it won't come to West.

I know myself and a few friends are waiting on an Octopath price drop to jump in. It's also summer and tough to jump into a huge JRPG. But maybe it'll have some decent legs after this impressive debut.

I did a little research and I'm pretty sure no game has sold more first month on a Nintendo "home" console than Super Smash Bros. Brawl at 2.7 million. For a single month, New Super Mario Bros. Wii sold 2.82 million in December 2009.
They would be pretty stupid to release NSMBU this year when they could be making an entirely new 2D Mario for 2019.

I asked on twitter, but do you have anymore specifics on Octopath, like maybe comparisons to get a better idea on how well it sold other than being #1 this month?

Thanks! :)

New IP, no digital... so I'm not sure how I could frame the performance without giving numbers, which I cant do.

What can I say? It did really well even without digital.

Good luck with that.

I assume you know who the Publisher is?

Gah, I didn't know NOA published it. Maybe I'll play it in 2 years (: Just not a game any of us were eager to jump into at $60 with a lot of the cool other indie releases going on right now.

About Smash: honestly, I've never bought a single Smash game and am not even a big fan of it (I'll happily play it with friends at a party, but that's it), but the amount of content and care that's being put into the game is so apparent from the E3 Direct and the latest Smash Direct that I'm seriously considering buying it. It helps that Castlevania and K. Rool are in. I hope the mysterious Adventure/Spirits mode is good.

I skipped the Wii U version because I knew my friends weren't getting it. But we're all already talking about Smash for the Switch. It's going to be massive, because I'm clearly the barometer for how well a game will do.

Octopath Traveled to numba' 1 my dudes! I hate congratulating big ass companies but mad props to Nintendo and Square Enix for this achievement! Also Nintendo continues selling Switches like pancakes! If it's selling this well in July, just imagine how it will do during holiday season with freaking Pokémon and Smash Ultimate! So cool to see Nintendo doing so well. I honestly thought they would never recover after the disaster that was Wii U but damn, what a comeback.

I'm still feeling good about my holiday predictions, including Switch being the best-selling hardware platform of 2018. But I guess we shall see.

Interactive Gaming Toys as a segment is no longer meaningful. Some Amiibo continue to sell well. They're the only IGTs selling.

I wouldn't be surprised if the only hardware revision for the Switch in the next year was simply removing the amiibo support

No worries! :)

How has Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy done on Switch compared to XBO, PS4, and PC?

All we heard IIRC was that in the UK the Switch version was just barely behind the XBO version in its debut week, that was it.

Thanks for answering what you can, I deeply appreciate it. :)

2 things:

1) Congrats on having your kid!!

2) Random question but I was wondering how third party controllers sales compare to first party. Is it as heavily slanted to the 1st party side as I am assuming or do third party units perform decent in the market?

Thank you I really appreciate it

1st party controllers certainly dominate the market no mistake there. Doesnt mean there isnt a place for 3rd party controllers it yeah the lions share of them are from first party. Mat would know better but I believe as a percentage 3rd party controller sales are smaller this generation than last

Will Nintendo Switch reached Nintendo's expected sales this fiscal year?

Tough to say, I'm still not certain either way. Smash is already moving hardware and is going to continue to. Pokemon hasn't really begun to have any impact though and I think part of them hitting their goal is the Let's Go games need to be pretty heavy sellers. Hopefully there is a late ramp up affect from them with more casual consumers

Switch should likely take August as the top selling platform as well, as PS4 Pro shortages continue

It's insane. I get hyped for the games and think they're fun, but the core gameplay is not nearly all I use them for. These games are like a museum.

It's worth $60 alone for the 900+ songs across gaming history that can be used as an MP3 player lmao. I sometimes could spend 45 minutes just flipping through trophies and reading descriptions.

That million sold had to go somewhere. So incredibly happy to see this.

I wonder what it is about Octopath Traveler that had the appeal. Sure, the art style is pretty, but the story leaves something to be desired according to some, people aren't really craving JRPGs as of late...is it just that FFVI reminiscence?

Also those legs on Zelda and Mario...I do think Breath of the Wild will outsell Mario Odyssey in time. I can't believe it's on this trajectory.
As someone who didn't grow up with the old school JRPGs and have zero nostalgia for these type of games, the very first demo and it's easy to grasp, yet deep gameplay mechanics along with the music drew me in.

The demos did a very good job on both people like me and old school gamers who really appreciate these types of games. It's a very good game so far.

People who haven't bought it yet. I still haven't, I might consider it if a Switch port eventually shows up, but I'm not sure ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

seriously though, GTAV is THE PS4/Xbox evergreen.

I'd be willing to bet a lot of the continued sales now are tied to pc/Xbox x/ps4 Pro upgrades.

I doubt Matt can tell us (or knows), but I wouldn't be surprised if most GTAV sales this month were across those machines rather than ps4/XboxOne

Holy Crap! Congrats to Acquire and SE for Octopath Dominating sales in July! It was definitely the biggest game release that month, but man I didn't think it would top GTA5. That's huge for the Octopath folks!

For real. As an oldschool 8-bit gamer you almost feel obliged to buy it. And I'm not one to go for "best value" over sheer quality, but Smash is fun enough where I can let the overwhelming amount of content sway me. I know I can find things to enjoy in it, and if it's truly priced like any other Nintendo game, it really is a steal and a big middle finger to the microtransaction-riddled part of the industry.

Yeah, not really interested in dissuading any "concerns" of others. Just wanted to put my two cents in. Game is the fastest selling for Sony, I'm sure they're thrilled with its performance.
Oh of course. It's doing incredibly well. Even plenty of big multiplatform games don't do as well. So it's just weird why some people are acting as if it isn't

Well my post was tongue in cheek. Yeah, I wanna see it make it's way over too

All of these concern posts for a game that was released 4 months ago and is still charting are hilarious.
I think it has to do with people seeing it as a evergreen and people's perception of evergreen titles being heavily biased thanks to games such as GTAV and most of Nintendo's games in the top 20. They expect the for mentioned games to remain steady and either raise or fall only a few spots a month rather than falling steeply as God of War did. With that said, the fact that God of War is still in the top 20 and its in its 5th month makes it, without a doubt, an evergreen. I expect it to remain in the top 15 for the rest of the year, not counting November or December where I expect it make it back into the 10. It's great to finally see some Sony first party games achieving the status of evergreen.

There really should be more big releases in the summer. Octopath is proof that there can still be big sellers in the "summer drought". Just seems like such an untapped market to me. But I'm not a sales guy so what do I know lol
