Pelosi says impeachment 'not a priority' after Cohen's guilty plea

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Wednesday said impeaching President Trump is "not a priority," despite Michael Cohen's guilty plea to campaign finance violations that implicated the president.

"Impeachment has to spring from something else," Pelosi, who has long downplayed the possibility of impeachment, told The Associated Press.

Pelosi's words are meaningless right now. If she says "hell yes we're going to impeach Trump", she'll just energize the Republicans for elections when Fox news plays the soundbite on a loop in the corner of the screen for the next 2 months.

As of now Democrats have all they need to start the impeachment process. And who knows what else there will be between now and when Democrats actually get to it. I used to be against impeachment just because I felt like it would energize his base, but now that Trump has been implicated legally, I'm all for it.

Impeachment is a dumb idea unless the dems win the house and can somehow lock up 67 votes in the senate. Not only will it just waste a bunch of time and energy, but the right wing media will spin it all as a witch hunt even more than now and Trump will come out looking like a winner when he is acquitted and he may even pick up some sympathy support like Clinton in the 90s. If the dems get the house they need to investigate as much as possible, try and stir up as much bad press for Trump and the GOP as possible and then hopefully in 2020 can hold the house and take the senate and presidency back.

I checked the Donald last night out of curiosity and they are talking about Obama's campaign finance violations. Looked into it (they provided an image of the headline only for some reason!) and sure enough it was absolutely nothing ("relatively minor")

Then checked Trump's twitter feed and lo and behold he's talking about it, too

Has someone found Trump's tweet stating violating campaign donations is an impeachable offense?

Good, stoking conservatives during an election where their enthusiasm is low would be nutty.

Need to balance that with the tradeoff that you could get more Democrats/Never Trumpers enthused to turn out for Dems if they knew a vote for Dems would be a vote for impeachment.

I'm not sure which strategy would be preferable but I would never discount Republicans ability to fall in line and show up when called upon. Priority should likely be on energizing Democrats rather than depressing Trumpers.

While it probably isn't a good idea to begin impeachment proceedings ASAP, calling Nancy "We're Capitalists" Pelosi so damn smart is probably not too accurate. She can't even commit to support kneeling NFL protesters, and has no ability to energize the left. Way too much focus on centrism.

Oh I have, and I saw the the video of him from earlier. I don't live in Texas, but he would have my vote. I have a good feeling about him winning, for whatever reason.

I'd call it even odds on Democrats ever impeaching Trump. Never underestimate the lure of status quo for those in power.

Trumps fixer and former lawyers both guilty of tax evasion crimes that involved Trump, and we still haven't seems Trumps tax returns! I can't wait until this ugly chapter in US history is finally over.

Those of you who want Pelosi to say she'd impeach Trump are terrible strategist.

You don't broadcast all of your teams plans right before a game.

It's actually smart of her to say that 2 months before elections where so far the Dems have had a huge enthusiasm boost, but not conservatives.

Plus, there's no reason to advertise it prior to Mueller's final report and recommendations coming down. You can't talk about protecting Mueller and his work and then turn around and try and impeach before he's finished.

Yeah, Dems are right where they need to be right now. It's time to act like sensible adults and get fucking elected in November. Say you want to let Mueller finish his report before taking any action. Then you don't talk impeachment, you just do it.

Are his tax returns something Dems can immedietly force out if they retake the House? That certainly seems like something he'd do anything humanly possible to prevent from happening.

You also don't say that the one crime you (currently) may be able to make stick isn't important enough to impeach over.
Saying nothing would have been a step up.

This person is not Left. Supporting the status quo is not Left. Flipping between "both sides" of a clearly one-sided issue is not Left. This is complacency.

In the first video she clearly says current form of capitalism not good enough. In the second she says while she loves the flag and anthem, she's a strong supporter of the 1st. Saying capitalism and current income inequality is not good enough and siding with the players on the anthem issue is neither supporting the status quo or taking both sides.

Pelosi has problems, but she's right to downplay impeachment. There is almost certainly more to come, and there's no reason to make the midterms a vote on/for impeachment. Focus on local issues, focus on Trump's corruption.
