It's not very surprising. Boyle's script was probably drastically different from the expectations of the producers.

Give it to Michelle MacLaren.

I loved what Taika Waititi did with Thor, perhaps he could do something big with Bond?

/s (kinda)

Hell, could Edgar Wright do it?

He always seemed like an odd choice to me anyway. Kind of hard to get excited about bond nowadays

I don't think a delay is necessary yet. The film is over a year out, and the script has to be more or less locked down now.
Didn't John Hodge write the script specifically around Boyle's premise for the movie? I don't think they're keeping it and if they don't delay, with this little time, we'll end up with a pile of shit.

Good for Boyle. I can see why he was interested but the Bond team suck the joy out of any director and they like a certain type of director, one who's easily overwhelmed.

They even bent Sam Mendes to a husk of a director. Which is why I was surprised he came back for Spectre. Apparently Craig begged him to do it.

Which is why I would seriously doubt that Nolan could ever do it. Him and the Broccoli Clan would clash from the off. They are very hands on.

Although if this next film is another turd they may have no choice. I'd personally love to see Joe Wright be given a chance on a Bond movie. Moreso than Nolan.

Crazy how this franchise is in a rut while Mission Impossible has been straight fucking fire for 12 years now.

Goddamnit. There's no way they'll hire another "creative" behind the camera for this bond. Just get somebody who can efficiently do the dirty work and leave the fresh take for the next bond.

Yeah, I'm probably out then. After the insufferably dull Spectre, I've gone from being an avid Craig-era Bond fan to wanting them to put it out of its misery. Boyle would have injected something interesting into the final chapter, if only some much needed kinetic energy (something Spectre grossly lacked). A series I had so much faith in after Casino Royale looked like a deer in headlights with Spectre, a directionless slog with some truly awful story decisions.

Mission: Impossible 6 should have been a crossover movie with Bond and Ethan Hunt working against one another, then together eventually. MI6, get it?

Regarding Nolan - well, this is what he said last year:
"A Bond movie, definitely," Nolan said in an interview with Playboy. I've spoken to the producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson over the years. I deeply love the character, and I'm always excited to see what they do with it. Maybe one day that would work out. You'd have to be needed, if you know what I mean. It has to need reinvention; it has to need you. And they're getting along very well."

Things are getting pretty close to that point of being needed, but Nolan clarified earlier this year that he's not doing Bond 25.

Susanne Bier, she directed The Night Manager, I think she should get consideration. If Christopher Nolan were to do Bond, I would want a fresh slate so he can craft his won Bond series.

Give it back to Campbell to bookend Craig's run. Or better yet have Campbell usher in a new Bond that isn't burnt the fuck out. I know a lot of people would prefer a splashier director, but I think someone like Campbell is perfect for the series.

Boyle's script was turned in months ago though. His joining the movie was contingent on his script getting approved.

That's what makes this so weird. Casting was already underway, they're supposed to stay shooting in a few months. Creative differences would've emerged a while ago if Eon were unhappy with the script. Maybe it's an Ant-Ma situation where they tried to keep forging ahead until they couldn't get over something

Maybe budgetary? IIRC Mendes went insanely overbudget on Spectre so EON may be trying to be a bit more budget conscious and conservative.

Dont get Martin Campbell please.

He is a great director and one of Bonds best, but he really isn't a director that can make a good movie out of a bad script. He is one of those directors who is completely dependent on how good the script is.

This sounds like it's going to be a rush job, so Campbell probably wouldn't be the best choice despite his history with the series.

Feels like we just need to get this film out of the way, get it done as quickly as possible and as serviceable as possible.

Bring Nolan and a new Bond in for a soft-reboot from Bond 26.

If Mi6 wants a top quality movie featuring Mi6, might as well make an exception and hire the man who made Mi:6 into a stellar action spy thriller!

Agreed. Campbell is more a "reboot" Bond director anyway. He does really well when he has to help reinvent Bond, which both GoldenEye and Casino Royale set out to do. I don't think taking a tired actor for a final outing would go nearly as well for him as the two Bond films he directed.

back on track with the Bond movie pattern of the actor's last film being their worst.

James Bond is a fascinating franchise.

It's really dated, even the modern films. It's founded in all kinds of world outlooks that aren't really accepted in 2018. Very problematic. Sexism, racism, xenophobia, toxic masculinity, etc.

At least half of the films are terrible and even a lot of the ones that are "good" are really just okay and propped up by nostalgia.

Edit: i should note that i enjoy watching them and will always have a soft spot for Bond because I grew up with a dad who watched them all the time.

Well that sure is a hot take. And what does not acceptable in 2018 even mean? Not acceptable to you, maybe. But otherwise, it's acceptable. Except for the Moore era and to a lesser degree, the Bronson era which is very Moore-like, the films age well because it adheres to a classical filmmaking style which holds up better than trends in filmmaking which come and go.
