As a result of this work, today we are releasing the Beta of a new and improved version of Steam Play to all Linux users! It includes a modified distribution of Wine, called Proton, to provide compatibility with Windows game titles. Here are some of the improvements it brings to the table:
  • Windows games with no Linux version currently available can now be installed and run directly from the Linux Steam client, complete with native Steamworks and OpenVR support.
  • DirectX 11 and 12 implementations are now based on Vulkan, resulting in improved game compatibility and reduced performance impact.
  • Fullscreen support has been improved: fullscreen games will be seamlessly stretched to the desired display without interfering with the native monitor resolution or requiring the use of a virtual desktop.
  • Improved game controller support: games will automatically recognize all controllers supported by Steam. Expect more out-of-the-box controller compatibility than even the original version of the game.
  • Performance for multi-threaded games has been greatly improved compared to vanilla Wine.
ENORMOUS for Linux Gaming. WOW. Special bundled version of Wine for Steam that will allow Windows games to run in Linux without the end user having to mess with stuff or set it up, and improved performance over normal wine.

WOOOOOOW.

My experience with Wine in the past has not been great but it looks like Valve added some voodoo to improve it. Looking forward to tests and all.

Would be nice if this were to come to macOS too at some point.

This is seriously some of the biggest news to ever hit Linux. This is arguably bigger than the SteamOS announcement. I truthfully never, ever thought something like this would come.

I am fucking floored. WOOOOOOW.

I... I honestly may switch to Linux now. Windows 10 is great but the security and update issues have been becoming a little too much for me recently. At the very least I'll probably dual boot and test it out on some PC

Does this work on Non-steam games?

Really cool, should definitely make gaming on linux easier, as at the moment it's quite a bit of faffing setting up things to get games running.

This is possibly the biggest story in PC gaming all year. A true, real safety net in the event that Microsoft ever tries to pull anything. Linux is now a legit gaming platform.

Shit. So this means that once I have steam on Linux, I should just be able to download and run any game from my library as-is right?

more than just SteamOS, this is a HUGE boon to Linux in general.

Between VOGL, and DxVK (their directX to Vulkan wrapper), their general support of SDL and Vulkan and Linux, and now this... maaaaaan Valve has done more for Linux than just about any other entity out there. This is amazing.

But why doesn't Valve develop any new games? And no, trading card games don't count!

Great news. I'd love to switch to Linux at some point.

This is pretty huge..

Windows keeps releasing updates that makes it less unappealing for myself. Might make the switch in OS but would like to hear more from existing Linux users experience with this new feature.

Probably not any game. But that indeed seems like where it's heading. In other words, working earnestly to divorce PC gaming from windows. Coupled with other stuff, like their Direct X Vulkan wrapper, this makes it way, way easier to get games not built for linux running in linux.

This is great considering the direction MS wants to take windows in the future.

It still has to roll out. It'll have to be developed and improved. We should expect some sort of growing pain. I can imagine messing around with three or four profiles and finding none of them work for a game or something like that. But they're committed to this. If it needs more work, it'll get more work.

I really never thought they'd do this. If anything I saw them letting you force unsupported Wine on a game yourself through Steam but to officially support the games themselves is a big fucking deal that might actually pull people away from Windows.

I bought an Xbox because I gave up on SteamOS but because of this when I get home I'm gonna install on my computer and test some stuff out. If the games run good then it will be my third party games machine and I'll be back on the PC gaming and complaining about shit not being on Steam train.

I hope it's coming to Mac as well eventually. There shouldn't be any major hurdles since the stuff it depends on also exists there.

I truthfully thought this was beyond Valve. I remember passionately arguing that expecting something like this from them was just out of the question, it's an insane task. I can't fucking believe they did it.
