That doesn't explain why it had to happen on the exact same day as the Switch release. Why would Bandai Namco not want to make sure people buy the $40 single-game port on Switch before they have the option to buy a collection with vastly more value to it. Why would they also not want to give the late-late port of a game as much of a spotlight as they could possibly give it considering it will have been nearly a year since the initial Nintendo Direct hype wave wore off?

To play Devil's Advocate, if someone didn't have any Dark Souls game, opted to prefer the Switch game, then this got announced and they bought it instead, then they effectively doubled their money by offering a more appealing value package compared to the Switch. It's exploitative since you're basically hoping people don't buy the Switch version in favor of the 3-in-1, but if it makes them more money at the end of the day, doesn't really matter.

FROM should've waited for next gen for 60fps DS3 and 4K across the board.

On the other hand, current gen consoles really could've used a Mass Effect Trilogy remaster.

I really need some investigative games journalist to figure out what the hell happened with Dark Souls on Switch.

It went from

1. Being announced by Nintendo in a Nintendo Direct, with the Switch version being the lead platform AND with an Amiibo

to

2. Demoing very well a few months later, with areas like Blighttown and New Londo running smoothly

to

3. Being inexplicably delayed into the Summer less than a month from launch, while the other versions were not

to

4. Going through the majority of Summer with no word, only to learn that it will now launch in the Fall

to

5. Having the entire trilogy launch on the other platforms the same day it releases on Switch

Like... how did we go from Nintendo announcing this game, Switch being the lead platform, a Gamestop exclusive Amiibo... to the game being delayed 5 months and released alongside the full trilogy on other platforms? This kinda screams something happening behind the scenes.

I'm fully expecting Bamco to launch the other two on switch at full price, then this bundle at $80 sometime after.

This thread is a good example of how mind boggingly out of touch some of you guys can be. Do you freak the fuck out when studios release box sets of movie trilogies or series'? Because that's all this is.

Wasn't the trilogy release actually cheaper than ME3 on Wii U?

But yeah I mean, it's certainly similar, it's just not quite the same. Especially because this is Dark Souls 1, and Dark Souls isn't a heavily story-based series where playing 3 before 1 or 2 would confuse the hell out of people.

It's still an extremely odd decision to launch them on the same day but I don't think it's as blatantly offensive as the Mass Effect situation was.

It's less the price and more the fact that there was a completely unexplained 5-month delay that will be capped off by a significantly higher-value re-release launching on the same day as the Switc version.

I mean, look at the situation. The Remaster is announced in a Direct, an Amiibo is announced at another Direct and everyone is hyped for one of the first major day-and-date 3rd party releases on Switch (now we've got to wait for Doom Eternal lol).

However, a few weeks before the release the Dark Souls Twitter posts "Dark Souls Remastered on Switch is delayed to Summer due to the winds of fate or some bullshit lol gg." The port goes almost completely silent until it's announced that it's both not coming out in the Summer and releasing in literally the most busy period of the year.

Then a week or so after that announcement Bandai Namco announces that not only is a Trilogy re-release coming to the two other main consoles but it's releasing on the exact same day as the late Switch port of a remaster.

It's quite a shit show all around, really, and I'm honeslty beginning to doubt the idea that the delay was for some unforseen technical reason and not third parties yet again being stupid on Nintendo platforms.

I was joking around that Bamco's press release would be probably something like "Due the nature of casualty the switch version of Dark Souls got delayed for several months. Furthermore we are happy to announce that a Dark Souls Trilogy will be available for PS4 and XboxOne soon!" when they delayed DSwitch in may.....and now THIS.

I mean wtf?
Can you flip off switch only users any more?

Mass Effect Trilogy was cheaper than Mass Effect 3 on Wii U. Dark Souls Trilogy is $80 and contains DSR, which is $39.99, and DS2/3, two games that can be purchased used for less than $20, have been offered on PS+ and Xbox Gold services for free, and are routinely on sale. The bundle is good if you never played the trilogy, but the core Dark Souls base likely has purchased DS2/3 on these platforms by now.

Dark Souls Remastered for Switch is $39.99.

Had the DS Trilogy seen release for $30 then it would be damaging to Switch. It will have minimal impact on those interested solely in DSR.

The big issue here is the timing. It looks bad releasing side by side.

You are ignoring 3's DLC which adds at least $10 to the price of that game and comes included with this trilogy, that and the fancy Steelbook which no doubt increases the value proposition in many people's eyes. There's also the fact that, if 2 and 3 are to come to Switch, 2 will be $40 and 3 will be $60 and neither will ever find themselves in a Trilogy collection like this.

I don't see how this isn't damaging to the Switch version unless you take optics entirely out of the equation.

This trilogy set was probably always planned for fall. Since the Switch version was delayed, likely due to online issues, they just decided to launch everything on the same day.

That doesn't explain why the trilogy is releasing the same day as this. You'd think Bandai Namco would want to give the Switch version as much of a spotlight as they can considering the bad faith generated by the delay and the fact it's releasing during one of the busiest periods of the year.

Why are people angry of this release? People are afraid that the Switch version will sell less?

First thing i thought of when i saw the triology announcement, thinking that this already came out months ago in Japan.

The Switch version was finished in April.
Maybe the offline version.

Well sure, most of us do. My point is simply that Switch will succeed without them.

I really do think Nintendo needs to accept this and start opening some new studios.

Don't act like this is normal, third parties are starting to bring more contents to the Switch, I was thinking the other day how at some point last year i had more SEGA games than Nintendo on their own console: with Puyo Puyo Tetris, Sonic Mania, and soon Valkyria Chronicles 4, VC remastered and Team Sonic Racing they brought really solid games so far.

This is totally Namco milking that cow as quick as possible regardless.

I'm confused as to why this changes your plans at all. These games are all available now, for this same price. Is the steelbook that much of a game changer?

Totally, I really think Nintendo should be prepared to go it alone in this industry. Getting third party scraps isn't what is making the Switch successful.

This is a mere bundle. It doesn't target the Switch demographic which does not have a single of these games available yet, and comes at a much higher price. I can buy all three games seperately for roughly the same amount of cash.
In short, I am not sure what this outrage is about.

Ah okay, thanks for sharing that then.

So the real issue then was the date. I guess they want Dark Souls to have a lot of mind share on October 19th but it's absolutely not a good look for Bamco.
Nothing personal against Nate Drake (who is a moderator to boot) but as far as I remember he's had some things regarding the Switch very, very wrong back in the past (unless I am mixing him up with someone else, in which case I deeply apologize), and so I would take this with a grain of salt. Also, his sources could be speculating (or heard someone speculating). Then again it could of course also be true, but networking is what most were speculating before all this came up, so...

Yeah Sega's shown pretty decent support. It's not great support, but it's better than most third parties have given.

It's the same as buying them all individually right now. DS1 is $40, 2 and 3 are $20 each. It's just a box set with a steelbook.
How many people don't own any of them and want to buy all of them at once at full price though? I would have thought they'd price it to appeal to people who already own at least one of the games.

Already have DS Remaster, Scholar and Fire Fades. There's no healthy reason of getting this.

I have to agree. At this point I'm seriously considering cancelling my preorder. So many great games and now there is a better value on other platforms, that will likely continue to drop in price in the future. I can't see how the Switch version won't bomb at this point.

I hope a journalist asks them what is going on and why they would make these types of decisions.

I too, am angry about this weird af decision by bamco. But you can't really think a platform will only thrive with the exclusive output of a single company do you? Quit that toxic mindset, third parties ARE welcome and more importantly, give the Switch an additional place in the market by playing them in handheld mode, no need to go any further than Fortnite.

I dunno, whoever is left out there who is curious about Souls games but never tried any of them. I don't understand the point of asking this question. It's pretty common to see box sets of previously released games in this industry.
