Pretty powerful open letter.... Still such a shame those shitbags came for her.

It wasn't their words, it's that I started to believe them.

Their words seemed to confirm what growing up as a woman and a person of color already taught me: that I belonged in margins and spaces, valid only as a minor character in their lives and stories.

Their words reinforced a narrative I had heard my whole life: that I was "other," that I didn't belong, that I wasn't good enough, simply because I wasn't like them. And that feeling, I realize now, was, and is, shame, a shame for the things that made me different, a shame for the culture from which I came from. And to me, the most disappointing thing was that I felt it at all.
I am not the first person to have grown up this way. This is what it is to grow up as a person of color in a white-dominated world. This is what it is to be a woman in a society that has taught its daughters that we are worthy of love only if we are deemed attractive by its sons. This is the world I grew up in, but not the world I want to leave behind.

I want to live in a world where children of color don't spend their entire adolescence wishing to be white. I want to live in a world where women are not subjected to scrutiny for their appearance, or their actions, or their general existence. I want to live in a world where people of all races, religions, socioeconomic classes, sexual orientations, gender identities and abilities are seen as what they have always been: human beings.

This is the world I want to live in. And this is the world that I will continue to work toward.

You might know me as Kelly.

I am the first woman of color to have a leading role in a "Star Wars" movie.

I am the first Asian woman to appear on the cover of Vanity Fair.

My real name is Loan. And I am just getting started.

Searched, didn't find anything. Turn this into an TLJ-hate thread if old. Or rather, please don't.

When she first left social media the thread here was full of people questioning if that is why she really left, telling her this is social media to get over it, etc.

Wonder if they will still show up now.

Friendly reminder, when you attack her character that is still an attack on her. You arent any better. Just ask Ahmad Best how fun it is to watch your character be mocked.

Sorry white dudes, this will always be a great moment:

This was the first thing I read this morning, and had share with friends . A powerful piece and a nice bit of affirmation.

That's a great and inspiring open letter. You have to be an evil, empty husk to attack someone like her for simply being in a movie. I wish I had her strength.

I don't care for Rose particularly, nor the parts of the film she is core to... but I haven't a fucking clue how that's Kelly Marie Tran's fault, there's nothing wrong with her acting whatsoever. Really glad that she's standing up to the bullies.

Mad respect for KMT. Love Rose the character.

Yeah, that ending part really got me. Such an empowering fuck you to all those mysogonistic, racist shitbags.

I'm glad that in the end, she didn't let it get to her, but found extra power in the whole ordeal. I'm pretty sure she'll kick ass in IX too. I liked Rose a lot in TLJ.

Really!? You're doing the very thing that your contradicting. You can call out people for being shitty to her without shitting on her character.

This is really nice op-ed, and really speaks to anyone who has ever hidden a part of themselves or felt bad about it, before realising that it's not you, it's the world around you that is wrong.
I hope she gets plenty more work and continues to break ground.

I'm glad she finally spoke out, can't wait to see her again in Episode 9.
Im talking about the current trilogy.
Having said this it doesnt get more token black inclusion than Samuel Jackson...at least they had the angry black man stereotype covered lol.

They trolled us with Finn....never forget.
Mace Windu was the opposite of the angry black man stereotype.

I ment it as a joke. :P You're right we could see more Jedi diversity. We won't see it in IX I'm afraid, but I really hope RJ's new trilogy does include some poc Jedi's.

I mean they dont even have to be Jedi...but just showing them having more force potential or access to the power.
Not hating but even the slum slave kid at the end of VIII is white lol.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I don't think Windu got jobbed - he got betrayed. He straight up beat Palpatine till Anakin showed up and fucked up everything.

Just like PT Anakin *always* does.

It's entirely possible Rian's trilogy won't have Jedi at all.

True! But I'm quite sure it'll have the Force in some capacity. I think it is meant as a new 'Saga' in stead of a spin-off, which I feel will limit it more to the space opera/heroe's journey style of the current three trilogies.

Windu didn't exactly show a lot of competence in any of those movies (or character in general besides his purple lightsaber).

Rose and Finn are in another league.
