I'm having a hard time understanding how so many of you feel that you have the authority to regulate what is deemed offensive by a marginalized group of people.

I guess I'm not sure they meant it in a mean spirited way towards the trans community. Though I will grant you I have no reason to think they didn't because I don't know them. I guess I'd like to think a social media manager wouldn't be purposefully idiotic.
You don't have to be mean-spirited to act with disregard though. Even the latter is bad enough.

The fuck is going on in this thread, so many people in here who apparently are totally cool with transphobia? This is not people being sensitive over nothing here! That tweet is a blatant transphobic meme. Its gross. Y'all are being gross too. Ugh...

That's probably just a "dumb" tweet, and should not represent the game... But that's exactly what I want from the game. I want to see the CDPR being offensive and talking shit about all possible social groups. If they really want to make a political-themed game, the last thing I expect from them is to see that they're afraid to mess with any subject, controversial or not.

If this is the path they want to take, I hope they stay on to the end, and I really hope they do not change only because of those who did not like it.

It's interesting to see where Resetera differs the most. Other sites battle over sadly much more offensive things.

I'm not saying this isn't important. I learned a little more about what it's like to be a trans person on Twitter from this thread already.

I assume whoever is running this twitter is simply trying to use similar language then its perceived fanbase. Doesn't make this better, but it explains why this keeps happening with CD Projekt

I dunno if it's planned or concerted on their side but you are absolutely right : it's a particular form of corporate populism, that we have seen in action with Eion Musk recently. People will defend a brand like if it was a stand-up actor or a personal opinion.

Again, CDPR endorsed Gamergate in a tweet about Postal 2, then pretended they didn't know

they fucking know. and they know what the meme means, and who it targets.

They are intentionally being shitty.

It's one PR person on Twitter. (I assume its just one)
I don't think he intended to be "shitty".

So he made a dumb bad joke, that doesn't mean he speaks for all of CDPR.

I'm so confused. It wouldn't let me view the thread and said there was an error, then it looked like it was locked and now it's open like one second later.

Edit: Ignore. Didn't realize two threads were made for this and one was locked temporarily.

I am honestly surprised people didn't know about "why would you assume their gender" joke. I mean, I don't use Twitter, and don't visit Internet much other than ResetEra, and even I know of it.

Even if you did not know, a simple logic and thinking with a bit of brain power could deduce quickly on why such a joke is problematic, I mean come on now.
People have heard of the joke. They're "just asking questions" because CDPR makes cool games. Standard operating procedure in all of these threads.

CDPR does have a stance on that. They think crunch and labor is fine.

It's just that some people don't agree with that stance. But CDPR can have that if they want, as long as they're not breaking any laws in their country.
I think the reason of why they are so anti union is because socialism destroyed that country so they don't anything that resembles that

ok, you want CDPR to tweet out transphobia, racism, sexism, etc. because dehumanizing already marginalized groups via their social media account will... make the game better?

So we're still at the point where cisgendered are trying to tell trans people what they should and shouldn't be offended by.

CDPR better explain and arrange an apology and a firing, real fast, my interest in supporting them is currently at zero.

If they're gonna punch down like this, they ain't takin' a single fuckin' dollar of mine.

There's a difference between lampooning excess and just making light of the struggles of people who get shit on IRL on a daily basis. Not cool, man.

Eh, it's a lazy joke, but the only people that are going to care are the parts of the alt right or regressive left that want to get offended over anything they possibly can.

People really need to develop thicker fucking skin and stop getting enraged over nothing like this. Yeah, it's juvenile humour, but it's poking fun at both that fan and an 'SJW' stereotype, not actual hate speech against trans people.

Honestly, people genuinely trying to police language and paint obvious humour as a sort of crime these days are so bloody stupid and just pass people off, ultimately undermining their own point. It's so stupid.

I've always thought this meme was commentary on over the top faux outrage. I can't imagine many transgender people would snipe someone in such an aggressive tone who made who made an honest mistake misidentifying them, and they would absolutely be in the wrong to do so.

giphy.gif

lol at the ppl that never heard this. if you've been on the internet or played games online much at all the past 2 years you'll have heard this. its literally all over the place in ffxiv

I seriously doubt just about anyone in this thread hasn't heard it before. It's become increasingly common over the years, especially in "casual" settings. Most are probably playing ignorance.

As a trans woman I don't know if the comments of this thread are just FUCKING stupid or you don't have any empathy for us. I don't know whats worse.

So, once again Era shows how it couldn't give fewer shits about trans people. Thanks, guys. Thanks a whole lot.

I'm genuinely sorry you two, and many others here, are being treated so badly by not only many members who can't grow up, but also many of the mods who just slap a 1-day ban on these people and let them return constantly.

The only reason anybody calls Era a leftist forum is because game forums are mostly alt-right nesting grounds for scum. Anything more progressive than that is considered leftist to people.

Agreed 100 percent here. People are wayyyyy too sensitive on Twitter I mean holy shit.

My take on this is that this whole thing is incredibly silly and there's plenty more upsetting things to be focusing on like the treatment of LGBT people in countries where we're literally persecuted rather than a joke where people are getting armchair "offended".

Move on and stop getting triggered over nothing.
Man, there is just so much to unpack here:

1. Explain how the LGBT citizens of countries where they're not persecuted (but are likely still oppressed) are able to influence the policies of a completely separate country, outside of what is already being done in that regard (charities, support groups, etc.).
2. Explain how addressing something on Twitter would at all take away from the work to improve the rights of LGBT people across the globe.
3. Explain how a major developer quoting verbatim a transphobic joke constitutes as nothing, especially when said developer has a seedy history posting on social media about jokes of a similar nature. It's literally the equivalent of the "joke" of telling a woman to go to the kitchen and make you a sandwich, which is just as empty and unfunny.

See how silly your post is now?

While I agree to some extent, a PR person is literally supposed to be the person who speaks for the company. So, for me, at this point, it really depends on how CDPR deals with this issue.

Even if you didn't know about the joke, why would you even try to joke about such a sensitive topic? Especially if you're a PR person for one of the biggest and most highly regarded game companies out there?

I didn't know about the meme, I'm sorry it's hurtful, people will learn. Can I not get treated like I'm not a decent human being for not knowing about this or not getting scandalized over this?
I was treated like a decent human being when I parroted bigotry from other children in the playground. I wish I had learned then and there how truly terrible it was to repeat jokes when I don't understand, and people's lives are the punchline.

It's a dumb comment but I don't think it's worth the outcry. It's like people actively search for stuff to feel offended.
If you experienced a near-constant stream of misunderstandings and hatred just for being the person you are, you might not appreciate a lazy joke that makes light of your struggle to be treated like a regular person with real thoughts and feelings.

To be more specific, the joke in the OP is tasteless because trans people deal with assholes misgendering them to their faces, and there's nothing funny about being treated like some freak in a costume day after day when you're just trying to buy your groceries or update your ID card.

"Did you just assume their gender?" parodies people who genuinely care about trans people getting the basic respect they deserve.
