I expect the game's meat-and-potatoes to be really good, but also really familiar - in the sense that the game controls marvelously well, plays like a dream, but is also a game that encompasses most of the familiar game design aspects of open worlds in the past generation.

I expect the game's garnish - the part where it differentiates and stands-out to be higher quality story missions that are more akin to traditional single-player set-piece missions in terms of destructibility, scale and 'things happening' , akin to the past 2 E3 demos we've seen.

My 91 score is partly in consideration of the fact that this will be viewed with various tints of nostalgia and anticipation - as Spidey's coming-out party after decades of Activision mediocrity and Marvel Game's first true big game ever since they shut down Disney Infinity and went on their licensing journey.

I think some safe but tired open-world tropes and some jank will probably keep this from the 90s, but just barely.

Guessing 88, still making it the highest-rated Spider-man console game of all time.

I'm still salty they didn't pick the weekend before the holiday to release the game. Would of had a great 3 day weekend full of playing!

They've already got the preorders but I was hoping they'd try to replicate the full God of War hype week to make things really boil over. I don't think you need that record setting metacritic score to do it.

People keep saying Open world tropes are going to effect the score? I don't get this argument since red dead 2 is going to hit 95 at the bare minimum maybe even higher if the previews turn out to be 100 percent accurate

Mid 80's is about what I expect. Critics are stricter in this day and age and, while I'm personally hyped for the game, it doesn't look like a possible critical darling such as The Witcher, God of War, or Zelda, which, at the low end, are in the low 90's

Sorry Insomniac, but I'm going 85. Game won't be better than Arkham Knight and with less Batmobile, Arkham Knight is an easy 90-92. But I believe you guys can hit a 90+ with Spider-Man 2, unless you pick a better hero like MoonKnight.

Going to go with a solid 90. Swinging and the combat potentially have the ability to resonate with the reviewers in a big way, and knowing that this is insomaniac, the narrative and campaign experience is going to be decent to great.

My biggest worries of the game that I feel might not gel with reviewers as well would be the mandatory MJ/Parker sequences.

I know, but we know why Arkham Knight got a 87. In that game we don't have such deep and detail story about Bruce. And swinging in this game is more fun. Why predict it is lower than Arkham Knight?
Wait, Arkham Knight got an 87?! Well...that's a shock. Huh. Well, something else to consider here is that just because Arkham Knight got an 87, doesn't mean that Spider-Man will score at least as high, even if it's likely to be a better game. If it does, than Insomniac Games should be very happy

This is also something I considered, which is why I said 87-92. Based on the unanimously glowing impressions I can't see this game doing any worse than that. On par is probably the minimum if the rest of the game continues at that pace and it is what it has all but explicitly shown to be.

Are you saying that Arkham Knight got an 87 because of its story? Because that's simply not true. As I said, with less batmobile Arkham Knight is a solid 92. It's gonna be lower than Arkham Knight because it's copying so much from that series. I think when all is said and done Spider-Man will be on par with Asylum if it was made today.

While it might play overly safe with it's overt Arkham influences, more content with taking the familiar road than risk venturing into new territory, this is hardly a major detriment as the Arkham design template fits Spidey like a glove. In the absence of any real Arkham successor, a series already potentially overstaying its welcome, Spider-Man sufficiently fills the genre void with tightly executed game design and a confident presentation that supplants Batman's dark and gloomy Arkham with Spider-Man's colourful style of adventure and spirit. The core adventure comes to its conclusion a little quicker than expected, and New York City has little in the way of major diversions other than trinket hunts and the occasional side mission, but the time spent within is worth the investment. Rich with personability and identity, Insomniac's Spider-Man is an excellent starting point in what we can only hope with lead to longer, more content dense adventures in the future.

+ Tight, responsive gameplay that channels the essence of Spider-Man in exploration and combat.
+ Gorgeous presentation, in visuals and sound, oozing atmosphere and identity.
+ Enjoyable, well paced campaign with great callbacks and references for hardcore Spidey fans.

- Safe game design may feel a little too familiar for Arkham veterans.
- Short campaign and limited story rich side content.
- Occasional performance hitches on vanilla PlayStation 4. Pro recommended.

Uh...is it September 4th already or is this a review prediction? Or a parody?

I'm expecting low 90s, an Arkham Asylum-style reception of seeing a favorite hero getting the first worthy game in over a decade, the intrigue of seeing Insomniac's version of the mythos a la Rocksteady's take on Batman's characters and stories, and single-player missions that are more in line with the scripted spectacle and momentum of scenarios in a linear game but done in an open world as we've seen in the E3 missions.

Currently replaying Arkham Knight and honestly the Spider-Man game looks like what Rocksteady's freeflow design was destined to complement. While the freeflow combat system worked well for capturing Batman's skill, everything about the combat system - from the counter mechanic (aka Spider-sense) to how Batman leaps across the screen and flips over enemies (aka classic Spidey agility) to the grapple (aka webbing) - just screams Spider-Man in every way. Other game since Arkham has copied the freeflow design because it's popular but Spider-Man is the first game since Asylum that seems like it makes perfect sense to have such a system because it suits the character so well.

Solid 90. Arkham knight scored pretty high & I found that game average. I think this should be a better game.

What do you expect red dead to get?
About the same. Not quite the 95% that RDR 1 has simply because 1 was the first time we got a western game that captured the essence of the genre, and because the immersive sim-esque approach of 2 isn't going to widely appeal to everyone. Although I'm prepared to be surprised; if there's one company that make that kind of approach to an open world appeal to a wide audience, it's Rockstar

- Short campaign and limited story rich side content.

Now that you mention it, they didn't give us any indication of how long the main campaign is, did they? Normally developers give at least some indication of what to expect.

I now wonder if it is more like a 10-15 hours game or more like 20-25 hours. I hope the latter.
