I had to vote "other", because someone overlooked adding Dragon Quest Builders as an option. It is an incredible game that has eaten up an unexpected amount of my gaming time since it was released.

Of the actual named options on the poll, my vote would go to Breath of the Wild. It is a pretty amazing experience.

Nobunaga's Ambition: Sphere of Influence.
Best war game since the PS2 days.
Of games people actually play, I'll go with NiOh for my vote.

Torn between Witcher 3 and God of War. But I have no doubt, if The Last of us Part 2 is still coming out for this gen, its going to be my most favorite game probably even GOAT.

Almost picked Witcher 3, Bloodborne, and Nier, all which I love to death, but even if I never play Breath of the Wild again it was definitely the game that will stick with me most.

It was Bloodborne for me....until I tried to replay it recently. The technical part is just too weak. This game desperately needs 60fps and a smooth feeling. It's a shame, but I just can't play that stuttery mess. It's a no go for a game that focusses on combat and quick reflexes this much.

So, my choice is Witcher 3. Great world, great stories, great characters, great expansions, tons of content, great visuals (PC with mods). Combat was ok and some gameplay mechanics like witcher sense repetitive, but the overall package is just incredible.

God of War. But I also don't have an Xbone or Switch. I feel like BotW could fight for that spot. But as someone who never really loved the original GoW trilogy I was blown away by this one. It's my favorite gaming experience since Last of Us.

I get why Bloodborne and Witcher 3 are in the conversation, but I personally dropped both of them after a while. Bloodborne I freely admit I just don't have the patience to git gud, but Witcher 3 just doesn't connect with me like it seems to with a lot of people. And I fall in the "but the combat isn't that good..." camp.

I also just don't get the H:ZD hype. It's a solid 8/10, but it doesn't hit me as the classic a lot of people seem to feel it is. The story is serviceable, the combat gets repetitive, and once I got the unlimited I just fast traveled everywhere to avoid fights that were annoying more than anything else. It's an empty open world with some cool mecha-dino's scattered about.

But even if we do years, Wii U and Switch fall in the same generation lol. That's the thing.
Anyway, "generation" is just shorthand for "this period of game releases" at any rate, if you think about it.
Oh but I'm ok with both overlapping at some point of course. It also makes cross gen games even more "meaningful" in that sense.

Super Mario Odyssey got very little love in this poll. Interesting. Doubled and then some in votes by Nier and Persona even though it finished higher in ERA's games of the year awards last year.

BOTW. tbh, everything under BOTW (in the results) really hits home to me how boring this gen has been overall for me. So many games I would just say are 'okay' and would hesitate to even consider goty material being voted as game of the gen to some people. Different strokes I guess.

Super Mario Odyssey suffering in the hands of Zelda. Because, let's be honest, most Switch owners are going to choose BotW over SMO, and you can only choose one game.

I had a hard time picking between Horizon and Zelda. In the end I picked Zelda cause it seems like a world I could endlessly explore.

God of War floored me. There's so much craft, so much imagination, so much thought, so much polish.

I voted for Breath of the Wild, but I wasn't entirely happy doing so. It was the game that hooked me the most, but a lot of what I liked about that game came from the discovery of the world and mechanics. If I'd replayed it already, I have a feeling I wouldn't have thought as highly of it anymore. But it's a long game and it's still pretty new, so I've only played it once, and therefore I'm judging it solely based on my first playthrough.

Bayonetta 2, on the other hand, I'm sure I'd like just as much as I did the first time I played it, and from the games of this gen that I can think of, it probably would be #1 if BotW didn't exist.

Bloodborne, by a hair over both The Witness and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. That's a damn good top 3.

It's really the total package when it comes to game design, level design and art direction. The other two make a very strong case and I almost voted for them.

This feels like my personal Top 10, unranked:
  • Alien: Isolation
  • Bloodborne
  • Hitman
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
  • Super Mario 3D World
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
  • The Witness
  • Yakuza 0
Some really amazing stuff wouldn't even make the cut. This generation has been excellent thus far.

MGSV, pure gameplay excellence. The amount of ways to tackle missions is crazy. The progression is super impressive with new gadgets all the time. Obviously it has loads of issues with the story and it being unfinished but that gameplay is perfection.

I dont know yet if I can even vote on a single favorite.

Bloodborne was the most punishing, yet rewarding game. Life Is Strange had the best story and music. Fortnite is the game I enjoy most now and have played the most out of any console game, ever...

Of the options given in the poll, I would have picked Forza Horizon 3, which has been far and away my most played game this gen. But I picked other, because in terms of sheer quality and enjoyment, I think Xcom 2 is the best game of the gen.

Honorable mention to Hitman.

Out of what I've played here, probably Uncharted 4. Horizon Zero Dawn isn't far off despite my issues with it.

Dragon Age: Inquisition is my favorite game this gen though.

Same. Dragon Age: Inquisition was on a lot of (most?) publications' game of the year lists and won many of them. Belongs in the conversation at least.

Yeah easy BotW here.
I love Bloodborne and Witcher3 but BotW is the only one from this gen I'm seeing myself playing for the next 20 years frankly...
Maybe Hollow Knight as well.

Automata.

From an objective lens, it's definitely not the game of the generation. It's a game I have many issues with, from how it decides to reveal some of its twists to pacing in parts to how it treats its world design in the latter half of the game to the lack of sad songs in the OST.

But despite all that, it's a very special game. Its songs have different versions that fit the mood and urgency of your current circumstances. It has my possibly favorite science fiction setting in any work of art. And its ending is a masterpiece. It's my favorite game from this generation, the game closest to my heart.

The runner-up would probably be Bloodborne for possibly having my favorite gameplay mechanics (and perhaps gameplay loop) in any game, topped off with extremely intricate lore and amazing atmosphere as well as stunning weapon, clothing and UI design. The music isn't my cup of tea and I think it could have done more with its narrative ideas in the second half but I'll be damned if I'm not raring to finish up the DLC and then go for NG+ just to revel in this game for a while longer

Other: Dark Souls 3, surprised to not see it as a choice. Blooborne is a runner up though.

The Witcher 3.

No contest for me. Wasn't impressed by BOTW at all, the world felt empty, the enemies same-y, and though i liked the little bit of story and characters we got it was too small. TW3 gave me a complex, alive world with amazing quests, tons of different creatures and places, unforgettable characters and intense fights. The DLC being even better, and the replayability is a given considering all the choices and outcomes.

It's amazing. There really is nothing like it. Better than reading a fantasy book.

Undertale is a tight and focused game that blurs the line between narrative and gameplay in a way that I had waited just about my entire life for. So yeah, that one.

(If we were talking "best," I'd have to give serious thought to BOTW.)

MGSV.

Honorable mention: Bloodborne.

Likewise, my brain wants to say Bloodborne because aside from technical issues (framerate, etc.), it's just perfect in terms of gameplay loop, progression, atmosphere, etc.

However, my heart has to go with MGSV. So while I recognize that Bloodborne is the better game, MGSV is my favorite from this gen.
