Breach takes place in a near-future mashup of high fantasy and cyberpunk tech, where the barriers between the arcane and the mundane are breaking down. Functionally, the game plays out in 15-minute sessions as an asymmetrical multiplayer dungeon crawler, where four players choose highly customizable classes and complete missions in a gauntlet riddled with mythological creatures.

A fifth player takes the role of the "Veil Demon," an omnipresent dungeon master-type deity who can lay traps, set obstacles, and personally possess and control the monsters in the corridors. Combat, like in many MMOs and MOBAs, is a mix of auto-targeting skills and aimed skillshots, but the classes are unusually diverse: there are sharpshooters, necromancers, and even acrobatic Devil May Cry-style swordsmen. The idea, says game director Gabe Amatangelo, is to create an arena that feels different every time you play.

Sounds pretty neat. Quite interested how it pans out.

Sounds really cool, but something that you have to organize with 4 other friends for a play session. Cant see this being too fun with mute randoms.

It sounds awesome, but asymmetric games always give me a huge pause. It seems like 90% of the time, no one wants to be the 1 player who has to vs the others, in this case the Veil Demon. I'll keep my eye on it, but I have my worries.

Been working on this for three years as well as Shadow Realms at Bioware. Really excited to finally announce it. The team has done an enormous job building the game and studio, and I hope some people here will get a chance to try it out at Gamescom this week or PAX West soon.

We have a solo matchmaking option as well as the ability to play with any number of friends (1-4) for custom parties.

Congratulations!
I take it that this is based on Shadow Realms? Considering the 4 player co-op dungeon crawl gameplay etc.

A spiritual successor is probably more accurate; EA owns all of the IP related to Shadow Realms. We took what we learned on that project and applied it to Breach, though there are a lot of differences between the two games in systems and settings.

Just found out about this game today.
Looks decent. Dunno how it flew under my radar all this while.

Signed up for the alpha, hope I get picked :D

Color me intrigued. I've recently (re)kindled my interest in dungeon crawlers and this definitely seems like it could scratch that itch.

This looks really cool -- I don't think my of PC can handle it, though -- so, I'll be praying for uber-success so it comes to consoles. Definitely going to follow it, though ... I love the concept. I could see my friends and I playing it a lot.

Sounds really interesting but my biggest problem with these kind of asymmetrical games so far - Evolve, Friday the 13th, etc - has been that i find it far more fun to watch on twitch than actually play, because I play most of my games solo and playing with 3 strangers isn't really that fun.

I guess going f2p alleviates some of that concern, I don't have to "invest" in the box price and can play anytime but I can't really come up with a reason why I'd play vs just watch anytime. Its a dumb reason and I'm sure i'm in the minority so hopefully going f2p lets them be successful.

Oh, this looks amazing.

Hope it comes to consoles so I can give it a go. Then again, maybe my new laptop can play it. Guess I'll see today.

Eh, game play is a bit slower than I thought.

Looks and sounds interesting from a mechanics perspective, but f2p has me hesitant to sign up

We support both Solo and Coop game modes (with AI companions/enemies filling out the rest of the teams) and a custom game mode with any number of players from 2-5.

Oh, that's awesome ... That's a lot more player friendly than a lot of the asymmetrical games out there. I've stopped playing several of them because of the problems matching up with randoms.

This looks really good, I'm definitely in if it comes to PlayStation.

Yeah, that can sometimes be annoying. It'd be interesting if they tested the balance of having multiple veil demons.

What engine is this? UE4 right?
Yeah we're using Unreal Engine 4 for the game client/server. We have a custom service layer that we've written using Orleans (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/project/orleans-virtual-actors/) for things like authentication, account management, matchmaking, and more. I wrote a little bit about our gameplay architecture over on the Unreal Engine blog in case anyone's curious: https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/tech-blog/unlocking-breach-s-combat-with-unreal-engine
