@jamieoliver #jerk I'm just wondering do you know what #Jamaican #jerk actually is? It's not just a word you put before stuff to sell products. @levirootsmusic should do a masterclass. Your jerk Rice is not ok. This appropriation from Jamaica needs to stop.

Ingredients:

Jamie Oliver: garlic, ginger and jalapeños
Traditional jerk seasoning – allspice and scotch bonnet peppers.

The celebrity chef Levi Roots says he has shown Jamie Oliver how to make true Jerk rice and says " I do think it was a mistake by Jamie – either by him or by his team. Maybe he wasn't actually involved in this,".

Another celebrity chef, Rustie Lee, says it was "like Caribbean rice and beans" and "The jerk part of it is barbecue and you can't barbecue rice,".

It seems to me, that Jerk has been used in this instance as shorthand 'Caribbean style spicy ' by his marketing team, not so much Jamie Oliver. I didn't know what "jerk" truely meant before this.

Jerk is just another thing that has become a marketing term and far removed from its actual origins.

I hate when they through a word infront of something to make it more "ethnic". Jerk, Chipolte, sweet & sour, etc.

Recipes are appropriation? 2018 is wild.

It might not be authentic jerk or whatever, but this isn't a huge issue.

And FWIW I think Jamie Oliver is a massive bell.

Appropriation is such a stupid concept. All cultures will take on each other over time. Its always going to happen - complaining about it is basically shouting at the wind for being too strong, its not going to change the fact that cultures will take on parts of each other, sometimes well and sometimes ignorantly. But complaining about the use of a word is ridiculous.

Dawn is just looking for attention, its why shes going after Oliver and not all the other examples of Jerk being used to define a style. Highlighted further by tying in Levi Roots rather unnecessary and I suspect unwantingly.

I don't see the issue here. It's rice sold by a jerk. Would be more accurate to call it fat tongued wanker rice, but that doesn't really fit on the pack.

Yeah, this is ridiculous. If a cook can't make new recipes based on existing food and name them to reflect that, we're just gonna spend the next few centuries eating the same old stuff.

Just no. Silly thing to chase. Even if Jamie seems like a smary git at times. Food has always been adopted and shared across cultures and this is good. I'll cook and eat whatever I want from whichever culture and so should everyone else.

The real question is does Oliver's Jerk rice measure up to the real thing?

modern cuisine involves lots of fusion cuisine

most of ethnic cuisine are actually more modern then classical.

do you think Italians always had tomato sauce? Tomatoes are indigenous from the Americas. First pasta sauce involving tomatoes was made in 1692.

lol this is what happens when you sell out your name to shit products to make a quick buck

it's really baffling how their brand is not taking damage when they do stuff like this over and over again

it seems to be working too. see for example how people think aggressively mediocre in n out is great because celebrity chefs like bourdain were paid off to pretend they like it, lol

Is this harmful or damaging in any way to Jamaican culture? If not, why is Dawn taking so much offense?

How would you then describe such rice that is inspired by the basic ingredients in jerk cooking aside from the fire?

Was thinking there was no issue but it's clear that this has nothing in common with actual Jerk seasoning and the name is being used for marketing alone....so yeah I think a case could be made for cultural appropriation here.

All the people that think Jamie Oliver is a jerk are probably those tubby school kids who he tried to make slightly healthier school dinners for that one time but they squealed like piglets until their mums poked bacon butties and Yorkie bars through the fence.
