How big/small should I make my Bootcamp Windows 10 partition? I'm thinking dedicating 80GB to it?

(wow, I had no idea my iMac screen was so bad that it got burn-in for programs running for only a couple of hours)

Depends what you are going to do with it. Keep in mind some games write to the disk in addition to the game file size. You may want more to use some more space for gaming purposes if you have it.

When I created a bootcamp partition on my iMac years ago, I allocated 200GB to it, but looking at it now, I'm only using 44GBs of it, so I kind of don't want all that wasted space I have now. Maybe I'll do a clean 100GB, but I wish there were easier ways to repartition the sizing if it does turn out I need less space.

Of the games I played, I installed them to an external drive and would just place them off it, and the only stuff I remember being written to the internal drive were save files, which don't seem that big. I ran DasiyDisk the other day and didn't see any big files or folders outside of system stuff, certainly nothing in my user directory.

Especially since I'm going from a 1TB fusion drive down to a 512 SSD. After moving my iTunes library to an external, I still use 273GB according to Daisy Disk on the Mac partition.

Edit; Also, what's the state of Parallels vs VMWare for running Windows in MacOS? Looks like VMWare is head in performance nowadays? Scratch that, seems like Parallels is still better.

My iPhone music is shuffling when I click the next song button - anyone know how to fix this so it actually goes to the next song? Or is this a bug in which case I have to do some kind of phone reset?

edit: Nevermind, fixed. Didn't know there was a hidden menu if you scroll up. On iPhone X this was a real hassle to find...

33 hours for migration assistant :(

Ok, good news is it jumped to only three hours. Bad news is I've been sitting at 43 minutes remaining for half an hour. Don't know why it is stuck.

Lol, jumped up to 8 hours now. So much for using this tonight.

Every app is "damaged", including 1Password, and upon launch I got a bunch of errors saying certain launch program can't load. Well, this was kind of a bust. Guess tomorrow I'll be spending my time going through everything to make sure things are working since I can't trust the system now. Yay...

(thing is small, quiet, and neat. Boy is the screen so much better than my old iMac.)

Also, why didn't it remember my Launch Pad folders? just more work for me to fix. :/

Yeah, I don't know. The installation was slow, but I had no errors until it started to do the reboot and then I got all the ones about launch programs, and then once I got into the OS everything appeared damaged. So far, it looks like all documents got moved appropriately, but I haven't checked in much detail and I haven't gone through my photo library yet. The big problem is I'm going to have to go through things individually now since I'm a little suspect on the whole procedure. Like, even my Clocks.app is "damaged" and I don't know why. Every MAS isn't working. Very strange.

So I have been using my 2013 11" MBA in clamshell mode hooked up to an Dell U2713HM monitor.

After about a week of leaving it on in clamshell mode, when I open the computer it feels a little warm near the top close to the hinge both on the keyboard and on the screen. It doesn't feel hot, it just feels a little warm. A noticeable temperature difference from the top of the screen away from the hinge and also from the bottom of the keyboard area.

Is that normal? And is it OK to keep the computer in clamshell and have it be a little warm near the hinge? Or is is better to leave it out of clamshell? Thanks!

That sounds fine. Doesn't the MBA usually get warm at all? My 2012 MBP gets really hot.

Anyone here live in NYC? How are the AirPods in the subway? Kinda tired of my $25 wired earbuds + dongle thingy but they do sorta isolate noise a bit.

They're leaky as hell on public transport. They let a lot of sound in on the London underground, and regular buses and trains aren't great either. I've never used NY's subway but I assume it's just like London's.

It's designed to allow airflow while the screen is closed but I don't trust that shit.
Just enable keeping the internal monitor disabled when connected to external display.
Run this in terminal: sudo nvram boot-args="niog=1" SIP needs to be disabled first.

What does that do? How do I toggle the internal monitor on and off if I use that command?

It allows you to keep the lid open with the internal display off when connected to an external display.
You only need to run the command once and when you connect to an external display close the lid, open display preferences and press "detect displays" and now you can open it and the internal monitor remains off.

Thanks!

Not sure how I feel about permanently disabling SIP though....

I just purchased an iPad Pro 10.5 (didn't want to wait for new hardware) and it is absolutely amazing. I was coming from an iPad 3. I got the pencil because I will be using it for school and the beats. I'm pretty happy with the purchase but now I am trying to decide on a cover. Any recommendations. I need something ultra light.

Anyone have any thoughts on the iPad mini 4? I just picked one up at Best Buy today for $275 but haven't opened it yet. I figured I'd get it before it sells out due to price. Is it worth it in 2018?

Same iPad as in 2015, has an A8 like the iPhone 6 (not even an A8X). I can't in good conscience recommend it, unless you absolutely need the size

It's... eh. It's usable. The 2GB of RAM helps, but the A8 is definitely showing its age. The A9 is kind of the baseline for iOS performance these days.

Well shucks. I figured id get it as a browsing and playing some games device. I already have a 2017 MBP ntb so i figured getting the 10 in ipad pro was a bit pointless. Would that be a better get?

Ok. 24 hours with the machine, only about 12 hours doing stuff with it.

The keyboard is very stiff, and and it is louder than I expected since its quietness is touted.

Fans run crazy in clamshell when installing stuff in Bootcamp. Speaking of Bootcamp, getting the eGPU to work as a plug-and-play device is odd. While I'm in the luck of nothing have a dGPU, the T2 stuff makes things more difficult. Also, the way the ports are configured with the machine, apparently the only port that works is the lower left. Once I read about all that stuff, it seems to be mostly working ok. (Most instructions for this stuff either assumes you have an old MBP, or a 15-inch. Not a lot of stuff for just 13 TB MBPs).

Performance is crazy good. I'm running stuff at the highest settings. Haven't had a chance to test a lot of things, but it's amazing so far.

Migrant Assistant was odd. All apps were damaged last night, but after some restarts today, most of them started working. Looks like everything did get moved over, except for some stuff like my hosts file (which I'll just move over via a flash drive from my iMac). I was hoping EVERYTHING would move, but it looks like some stuff just didn't. Also, Launch Pad folders didn't carry over, so I had to rearrange things, and the menubar got reset to the default.

Also, I wish it prompts the user for some things it can't do on its own, like a "You had FileVault enabled on your other machine. Would you like to enable it now?" for stuff like that.

One thing that Migrant Assistant did move over, or create, is a user login called "MacPorts". Yes, I had MacPorts installed on my old machine, but it didn't have a user account assigned to it, and it doesn't appear in the System Preferences; I only see it as a login option. I have no idea how to get rid of it now.

Since I am going to use this in clamshell mode quite a bit, I'm going to get a dock so my desk looks a little cleaner than it does right now since I have a SSD drive plugged in just flopping around because the cable is too short to hide it from my sight.

I dunno, I've been bugging you all with questions about this, so if anyone has any for me, let me know and I can try to test or do things.

Edit: Surprise surprise, but none of my Safari extensions carried over, and 1Password's one isn't working for me now.

My understanding is that Apple doesn't like doing October events, so I'm hoping they try to squeeze everything into September.

iPhone, iPad, new Smart Keyboard, new Apple Pencil (?), new AirPods, AirPower, Apple Watch, MacBook, iMac, Mac Mini

Yeah, going back to 2012 Apple has done their iPhone events in September between the 7th and 12th. They're usually on a Tuesday or Wednesday

MBP has a horrible loud, clicks, shallow keyboard. However you do h]get used to it (noise never ceases to irritate though). I used my old mba last week and it feels so weird - like trying to type by hitting tiny marshmallows - they were so spongy and tiny with huge gaps between the keys. But I remember loving that keyboard.

Just got my roost stand; my neck and back are pleased.

However, my usb c hub is now hanging on the usb c port instead of firmly resting on the table. Seems bad for the port on my laptop. My question is: can I safely use a usb c extension cable?

So i ended up returning the ipad mini and got a Pro 10.5 for 499 (that microcenter price match) and now a lot more comfortable with my purchase. Any cases you guys recommend?

How are you planning to use it? I've only ever used apple smart covers - around the house I don't need full coverage and I've never damaged an iPad (had them since iPad 1). If you look after them you should be fine with a Smart Cover - handy stand for watching videos roo

After spending seven long years using my 13" MacBook Air since October 2010, I bought the (first generation) 12" MacBook last year, as it was reduced by 30% — from £1,249 down to £874 — not long after the new model was released last summer.

When I used the butterfly keyboard for the first time, I hated, truly hated it.

Almost a year later of owning the MacBook, however, I find the keyboard on MacBook Air too mushy, too small and has surprisingly big gaps between each key.

Although I wish the keyboard on my MacBook wasn't quite so shallow, and wasn't so noisy too, I do find it easier to type on and allows me to type things at a fair clip.

Yeah I really like the butterfly keyboards, the only downsides are the obvious reliability problems and the key travel. And at home I've got a clacky-as-all-hell mechanical keyboard.

Honestly, just as a macbook alternative so i dont run that machine to the ground. Media consumption, browsing, gaming, eventually doing drawings for write ups.

Smart Cover will be fine - you could look at third party options if you want cheaper, but the non-leather official ones aren't too expensive.

Windows don't remember their locations between clamshell mode and using the notebook as normal.

Any app ideas where I can "one click" to move everything to their correct locations, or should I figure out AppleScript like I think I did 10 years ago when I last tried this?

Also, I think this is mainly for detuned radios but anyone is welcome to chime in, I still don't know how to use the eGPU. If I put the MPR into the eGPU when in clamshell mode when the MBP is on but sleeping, nothing happens. I have to have it open, then plug it in, let the monitors connect, and then close clamshell. Is that right? And, in Bootcamp, I have to let the Windows logo load before doing so, yes? And, restarting in clamshell in either Windows or MacOS results in the external monitor NEVER loading, and I have to do a hard reboot. Am I missing something?

Also, what's good eGPU protocol? When I leave for work, should I turn off the eGPU enclosure for the day until I return, or is it ok to leave it on?

Honestly I went with just smart cover and a skin on the back for the longest time, but finally dropped the ipad once and dinged the corner, decided that was enough of that.

Got an Apple TV 4K to replace my burned Apple TV 4. Somehow I thought it would come with a nice HDMI cable for 4K HDR, so sucks to be me, I guess.

I will try to switch around the cables as I think that the cable that came with the soundbar might be compatible so I'll connect the Apple TV directly to the TV with that and use a simpler HDMI cable for the sound return to the soundbar.

On another note I used the Siri remote again even though I changed to a universal remote months back, and gosh I had forgotten how smooth and precise it feels to scroll through a video with it. You can simply pinpoint wherever you want to go within a second. It is just the best. I will add it back to near the couch, sorry Harmony but you cannot do it all. Pressing forward and backwards buttons is a struggle I'm tired of.

This is meme worthy.
It's very, very
real. I constantly find myself trying to see a joke again and passing the point or not scrolling enough, and the Harmony remote makes it even a little worse by adding some lag as it comunicates wirelessly to the base which in return blasts the IR signal. With the Siri remote you get continuous thumbnail previews that scroll at the pace of your thumb, and micro adjustments in the other direction when you overshoot are also instant. Very high QoL.
There's secretly no such thing.

Pretty much every cable you currently own is a "high speed" hdmi cable, and it will be just fine.
Well I can't get a picture when I turn HDR on, even if plugged directly to the TV. I'll try to mess with the settings but I was pretty sure it has to be the cable?
