For those unaware, PAS was a Smash Bros clone for the PS3. Due to a combination of licensing issues, the game had a fairly weak roster with some baffling additions (Fat Princess is probably the most egregious, though having two different Coles was pretty grim too).

Today, the PS4 is the dominant console in all markets, and Sony has a much stronger catalogue of first party games, with a few more recognisable and marketable faces like Alloy. Do you guys think PlayStation All Stars might have done better today, or is the mascot fighter thing just unique to Nintendo given their massive catalogue of beloved IPs?

No, it's still a bad game that had a visibly low budget.

They should have made it more of an actual Smash clone, instead of trying to make their own less appealing system.

The actual gameplay needed to be re-tooled, for some reason it got boring very fast to play compared to the Smash Bros. formula. I played it for about a week when it came out and then sold it off because it didn't stick with me.

As for Sony's mascots in general, there's not much difference between now and then. You'd have bearded Kratos, the boy, Alloy, the kid from The Last Guardian, Ratchet/Clank, and uh...Delsin from Infamous Second Son?

With a bigger budget, better development staff and some common sense with its character licencing, yes, definitely.

The PS4 isn't the dominant console in all markets. It's the dominant in most markets though.

They should make it more like Smash for better success today.

If they really want to do this, they should make a new one and give Capcom the license. The original is just a bad game.

No. Sony make great games, but their leading characters are largely anonymous when you compare them to a roster that Nintendo, Square, Sega and so many others can pull together. This is pivotal for a character based battling game.

One of the biggest things that hurt PS Allstars was that it tried to be Smash but not be Smash at the same time with its design choices. Shoulda just went all in and tried to imitate Smash as much as possible. I think the game actually did have quite a bit of hype going in.

Even before the licencing issues and whatnot it just never looked good (to me). I never got my hands on it myself but everything i saw of that game just seemed drab and unappealing. You can kind of tell at least a bit about gamefeel just by watching and man PSAR did not have it.

I just went back and played PSAS recently, it's a gem with a few key flaws.

I genuinely think it doesn't get enough credit for how unique the characters were. They each had so many moves and were dramatically different from one another, but incredibly resonant of the games they came from. In other fighting games attacks are attacks, but every button in PSAS was unique for the character you were playing as.

The game would probably do better now than it did at launch. If I remember correctly, it came out shortly before the PS4 did, which was a little awkward. But now, you could leverage a lot more Sony first party IP than when it launched.

At the same time, it all depends on which studio got to develop it. PSAS needed more love. It needed time and it needed a reworked and rebalance scoring mechanic. A lot of the hard stuff to design was there, but the relatively easier stuff was so incredibly lacking that it was too distracting to ignore.

I could go on, I really love the game, but it's hard to say it would be MUCH different now without answering a lot of questions.

I enjoyed the game for what it was. Wish there would have been a bigger budget to it, but it was something I liked overall.

Plus, it allows me to play as EA icon Issac Clarke.

Yeah the mechanics was a mess. It feel that who you punched didn't mattered since you could beat up player 2 but if you used your special and player 2 dodged and it hit player 3, it was 3 who died

The overall presentation was also pretty bad except the intro video.

It did sold a million faster than SFV tho =P

Platform Fighters needs to more love. Sega and Capcom can easily do it and it would sell like a gazillion copies because it could be multiplatform.

No, it didnt even managed to get the fan favorites into the game.

People wanted Dante from Devil May Cry, they got the DmC version.

People wanted Cloud, they got Lightning.

etc.

The roster isn't the only reason people disliked it.

Also a mascot fighter featuring mostly human characters - like Sony's current crew - would look kinda boring, unless they were going for more of a traditional fighting game style (maybe).

Just felt like a fun opportunity to make a thread reference. :)

In all honesty, overall, I liked the roster, and while PlayStation's lineup of characters obviously doesn't have the same gravitas as Nintendo's, Sony provided some of its most notable characters (well, as best as they could). Didn't really see a reason for two Coles, though. :/

The thing of it now is that I think PlayStation has an even better roster of possible characters to choose from since the original game's launch.

First they gotta actually embrace it being a celebration of playstation rather than an avenue to sell only whats popular or coming out soon.

Doesnt help that their own 1st party studios werent cooperating. Couldnt have Wander in the game for example. But here enjoy Zeus and Isaac Clarke.

We underestimate just how much strength smash has as a brand and how prolific sakurai is as a director.

They can do a mostly human character fighting game in the style of Power Stone. That way they can still have 4 players dunking on each other.

Just make sure it's not as shitty as Power Stone, though.

It wasn't a Smash clone, it smash knockoff. It was a bad game. A bad game will do poorly in any era. I don't think we are more forgiving now.

It would need Sony all-in backing it with funding, marketing and leveraging relationships to get key licenses which very clearly didn't happen the first time around. I actually really liked the game but it was very rough and the roster was dreadful. Props for some of the movesets though, they managed to get really creative there.

People wanted Cloud, they got Lightning
They didn't even get Lightning. It was an... awkward roster

Nope. It was mediocre at best.

Sony can try again with actual effort put into it. Make an ultimate first party + 3rd party fighting game
Don't really think it will work tho. They are not doing mascots anymore

true true.

I would they rather make a third person shooter with abilities like Overwatch. That could possibly work.

The game was hurt by not having Ring Out mechanics. The roster, especially post-DLC, was fine besides a lack of some iconic third parties.

It should be noted that it played really well and had a lot of melee and special move mechanics that Smash would do well to ape. Radec and Kratos in particular were really fluid to play as (Radec had a charge shot that angled as you held Triangle that was really well-done), but when it was time to dispatch an opponent the game fell flat. You'd have to use a gauged Special.

There have just been so many new IP's since then that now it would be stellar in terms of roster. Just keep that shit Ring Out, not special dispatch.

The difficulties PSAS with character licensing was what made me realize how insanely hard making these types of crossover games must be. I assumed before that 1st party stuff would be no problem, but PSAS had trouble even with that.

It puts into perspective why there are so few gaming crossovers, and what an accomplishment Smash actually is.

I still don't believe that they'd have a strong enough roster to make it truly enjoyable. I liked the game for what it was, and I like Sony, but I can't think of any first party character of theirs that I really care about. Ratchet is probably the closest, unless we start talking about like Legend of Dragoon.

Not if it was the same game. I enjoyed it but the game felt cheap interms of presentation.

Sony should reboot the series into a Power Stone type of game.

Only played it a few times at my cousin's, so I can't really critique it much... but man, it could be pretty cool to play as 2018 Kratos in a Smash clone.

Doubt it. What, you get Nathan Drake, Alloy, Ellie and BOY...

I guess how Nintendo's mascots skew more colorful, round and kid-friendly Sony would be the opposite. I'm pretty sure it'd turn into Mortal Kombat at some point. It might fair better as a action game take on the Avengers movie where they all cooperate to take down a common enemy...with Kratos being the Hulk.

If they incorporated ring outs, then it would have worked back in whatever year it released.

The whole building super meter to kill being the only way to kill was a fatal error for the game's longevity.

No, especially not if they stuck to the same supers-to-score-points system. It just wasn't fun to play compared to the game it was ripping off or even compared to a traditional fighter. Especially now, I just don't think there is room for another "Not Smash" game on any platform.

I also didn't like the roster and I don't think the new franchises added since last time would change that for me. To say nothing of the ones that wouldn't have any sway in 2018.

Angola / Zaire border region.
They should have limited the roster to Smash 64 levels... like 10-15 characters that are all actually big names or "iconic" characters. Then focused on a polished core gameplay experience. I would be down for a game like that for sure.

I don't care what anyone says. If the game launched with the 24 characters, exact same gameplay system, with a bigger marketing and a much bigger support (meaning, better balance, more modes, etc) the game would've done very well.

They would totally get flack for the roster if it released with the 24. But they did have plans. Sony kinda threw Super Bot under the bus, both in marketing and the long time support they were promised.

Anyway, I would love to see a sequel. A roster of 30 atleast, better support both pre and post launch and some kind of actual marketing and I would see this game selling VERY well on the thriving PS4.
In the marketing, honestly use Drake, Kratos, Crash and Aloy or something like that, no hate towsrds Fat Princess and Sweet Tooth, but using them as two of your four main characters in early marketing seems like a dumb move.

"Brawl has that Solid Serpent guy or whatever? Well, what about fan-favorite Cyborg Raiden!? Eh? ... guys?"

(1:53 timestamp)

The producers from both Konami and Platinum Games were not too happy with Raiden's inclusion in PlayStation All-Stars lol

I get the impression Inaba in particular was annoyed at how similar the game was to Smash Bros. I'm pretty sure that studio has a lot of respect for Sakurai.

The game was actually kind of fun, but that presentation definitely didn't help. There were also too few actually viable characters

It was a "PlayStation" All-Stars game without Crash or Spyro and Smash was the one that ended up with Snake and Cloud.

It was KINDA fun, but the kind you would quickly get over...

Yes, I went into it thinking it would be more of a Smash clone, or, rather, hoping it would be, and was disappointed...realllllly hated the "you have to use a special to knock players out" thing...

Sony's IP don't have the pedigree that Nintendo's ones have and they had failed to bring decent third parties characters in... so no, it wouldn't have done any better because the roster was a bunch of nobodies.

With that roster absolutely not.

get Solid Snake in there, Crash, get Cloud in there, get the real Dante in and you have a chance.

Get Gabe Logan in there!
