I won't be able to contribute much but a huge fan of pixel work so I'll be keeping my eye on this thread! Hopefully I'll be able to add something in the future - love the kind of animations some can do. Anyway, excited to see a thread dedicated to it!

This thread reminded of me the days when I'm still addicted to pixelcars. Making and modifying those suckers are awesome.

Hey there everyone! Glad to see this is a thread! I already posted this in Game Dev but it seems like this is a more appropriate location. I just started working on pixel art for the first time really this month and have been having an absolute blast. I know it needs a lot of work but I'd love some comments and criticism. So far I've had a blast and I'm looking forward to keeping it up!

The OP is finally pretty much completed now. Rehosted the images so hopefully they show up for others now!

been meaning to learn this style for a game a friend wants to make with me :)

Love the username! And awesome, this is the perfect time to start! :) Do you know what kind of game it will be?

I'm curious as If whether people use a drawing tablet or just mouse to draw their pixel art? Do you sketch it before hand or just drawn on the computer?

Kintaro: I haven't pixeled since a few years, but with things like characters, portraits, trees &other plants that are not 8bit-style, to help with the proportions, I usually do a rough sketch (Photoshop 7 then the acursed CS2) using my wacom which I then pixel over on another layer.
With fullart I've done both, scan in the art or directly sketch in PS.

Robin: your links are broken- imgur doesn't play nice anymore. Alas I opened only one pic: are you going for the Earthbound/Mother-style? Or do you want to flesh it out more to haved it look more like Illusion of Gaia?

SmileROM: great OP!

Nice OT! I'm a pixel artist / animator for chucklefish so I'll be posting in here pretty regularly!

I primarily use a Cintiq 13 tablet and Aseprite. Although before that i was using a regular mouse and Photoshop to do everything. Aseprite has much better animation tools so I'd recommend it!

Awesome, can't wait to see your work! Also I'm really looking forward to Spellbound, looks great! Forgot to mention it in the OP :O

I also would recommend Asesprite for anyone else wondering. The program still gets updated regularly compared to a few of the other pixel art programs and most the tutorials I've seen use it as well which is super helpful. They're also working on a phone app which I'm interested in trying too.

Nice thread and congrats on the OP. That upcoming games list is enthralling, there's some wonderful wonderful stuff in there. Also, I'd like to point out this game: Dark Devotion. Their Kickstarter campaign was successful and I think the game is slated for release in 2018.

Try to avoid pillow shading and focus on a lightsource for shades.

Honestly, yeah. That's valid and helpful. I was feeling the same thing when I finished that one up and kind of decided that was the last one I'd be doing like that. I'm kind of ready to put that one behind me and move on but after I read your post I went in and tried to fix it up a bit.

Yeah, it improved a bit!

Also keep in mind that unless you make the floor shadow purposely centered, it might be affected by the light source as well. Plus, I think only one tone of that shadow is enough for the cartoon style you're going for.

Haven't had as much time lately to keep practicing, but last night I spent some time practicing a more realistic style, using a selfie as my guide. Needs a lot of work but I'm starting to get more comfortable and want to make a more genuine attempt in the future w/ shading and different colored light sources.

Great thread! And it makes me happy to see "Flynn: Son of Crimson" listed above. I'm one of the two pixel artists on that project!

Another great guide to pixel art is Michafrar's "Pixel Logic" series. It's still being written, but there are plenty of tutorials already available. He breaks down the various techniques used in pixel art, and brings in other talented pixel artists to discuss said techniques.

This is usually the tutorial series I suggest to people asking how to get into pixel art, as I feel the presentation of the material is easy to swallow and fun to read through.

You can check it out here: http://pixellogicbook.com/

I'll post some old stuff, I guess. I would post new stuff, but I don't really have any. Been kind of busy the last few. Typically do a lot of NES-grade stuff, but I can do more SNES-like as well.

By the way, your Seiken Densetsu 3 image is actually from Legend of Mana.

Tried to come up with an pixel art depth of field effect for my game which
doesn't need any blending (hence, works with limited color palettes). Still
working and improving on it now and then.

Oh sweet, pixelart thread! Yes please.

Obligatory spam of my latest project, doing the entire smash ultimate cast:

Lovely!!! :O I absolutely love how you captured so many iconic characters perfectly, but stylistically they still all really feel like your style. Super impressive stuff! :)

And thank you for sharing all those images, they're great! You really have the NES style perfected I feel! :O Do you prefer the NES style because of personal taste or do you find it's just easier to work with? Your other stuff is amazing too!

Great stuff Mental Atrophy! I particularly love that NES platformer mockup :D

And I'm always impressed when someone decides to draw an entire cast - especially one as big as the Smash Bros roster - awesome work, Neoriceisgood!

Here are a few fanart pieces I've done over the course of this year and last year. Been too swamped with game dev work to do much personal work lately.

Looking forward to seeing more people share their work!

Just looking for a new pixel art game suggestion.

Kind of narrowed down to Death's Gambit and Dead Cells. I own Hyper Light Drifter and Shovel Knight. Love those games.

I own a PS4 and Vita. It could even be something like Fez which I don't own yet and have only played the demo and enjoyed. Taking suggestions though.

Please don't just list games. Tell me why I might like them.

Thanks dude! I do everything at native res in Graphics Gale. I just scale up in Photoshop when sharing work online/in my portfolio so people can actually see it (also helps with compression issues, especially on Twitter).

Thank you! Yeah I always try to stay true to a character's general aesthetic while also making it my own, I try to balance it out rather than just fully making it my own thing.

Oh very nice. I havent used it myself so I'll definitely look into it.

My normal stuff is very painterly so when Ive done pixel work Ive gone fairly minimalistic, but Id like to go much further than what Ive done so far

Both, really. My nostalgia has always been strongest for the NES. But I mostly leaned that way because it's easier to get something up and running. I almost exclusively stick to game jams and it's much quicker to get something up and running with simpler NES-like graphics when I also have to do the programming and audio in that same 48-hour window.

Great stuff Mental Atrophy! I particularly love that NES platformer mockup :D

Thanks. Not a mock-up, though, but actually from a game jam several years ago: https://globalgamejam.org/2016/games/virgin-ritual

A really poor recording of it:

First attempt at any sort of environment, never finished it. I like how the crypt looking thing turned out although the perspective is seriously wonky. Recently discovered those miniboss pixel art tutorials and think I'm going to be starting from square one in regards to enviornment. Still, it's been a fun learning experience!

Great thread! It's always fun getting to see what other pixel artists are up to. I'm still early in development, so I haven't done a lot of art yet. I do have enough hopefully to give people a feel of the style I'm going for! Working title is still Project Harvest until I get my story properly sorted. Looking forward to sharing things alongside everyone as I progress!

I do have enough hopefully to give people a feel of the style I'm going for! Working title is still Project Harvest until I get my story properly sorted. Looking forward to sharing things alongside everyone as I progress!

The flashlight stuff looks really good too. I'm also very curious about the screen transition effect. What's a good resource to learn about writing rendering functions like that--anybody?
