The worst Metal Gear game in my opinion. The first two chapters are really good but the rest of the the game is filled with boring terribly written cutscenes. At least the games that came before and after it are amazing.

FPS, forget pre rendered stuff.

8 hours of cutscenes, graphs, tables and whatnot to try and make the most comprehensive story and cater for fans that were eager to know everything.
Of course it would not be perfect.
And one of the first games to really push PS3 to its limits and so early on! Still it was the best of its time, with all that to consider!

It's a mess of a story, but I appreciate the ambition and it got me emotional in places. My opinion on it has lowered over the decade, but I still think it's.......pretty good.

There are lots of good gameplay moments, but it's right up there with KH2 as having the worst story in any video game. There's just nonstop terrible cutscene after terrible cutscene. Kojima's unwillingness to edit down any of obscenely long cutscenes was horrible.

I thought it was a decent conclusion to the series. Then Peace Walker and MGS5 came out, both of which I heavily dislike.

It's literally half a game. Chapters 1 and 2 are the only ones that feel like a full game. After that you have barely any gameplay segments outside of tailing and some bosses. Chapter 5's beginning was so short it was ridiculous on the top of the ship.

A bunch of bad narrative ideas presented in one of the most polished games of that generation.

A firey folly with a handful of 10/10 scenes.

A brilliant mistake.

It's definitely the worst of the 1-4 group, but I appreciate the hammy cutscenes way WAY more after the lacklustre MGSV.

I found it just plain odd, and it reminded me of the second game because of that. The story was daft even by MGS standards and there was alot of story and cutscenes to wade through. I certainly found it a long way off MGS3's quality.

To this day I still think this had the best ending in videogame history (everything from the microwave corridor onwards)

Still waiting for a remaster Konami. Or at least port it to PC already ffs

Despite a few "missteps" in the design of a couple of the acts and a constant feeling that many of the gameplay systems and mechanics were not being utilised to their full potential, it's a genuinely fantastic experience. Definitely deserving of being GOTY (Twice over) :)

Definite issues with pacing, at the very start there's a cut scene and then you crawl under a truck and there's another cut scene, and the third act is pretty bad, but the gameplay is awesome and I enjoyed the cutscenes. Just think they tried to tie up too many loose ends that didn't need tied up.

I don't remember playing the game as much as watching it. The story was unimaginable shit trying to tie up 3 games, each intended to have no follow-up. It's garbage and the worst MGS game by far.

Didn't care for it at release, don't care for it now. Not a bad game, just one I didn't enjoy that much, especially coming off the brilliant Snake Eater. The locations were so boring and forgettable.

As a huge fan of the series, it was a luke warm experience. Some of the mechanical improvements was very welcome. Some parts had a good flow to it and in the beginning it balanced that "crazy, but not too crazy"-storyvibe that MGS sometimes excells at.....
But quickly it just started its nosedive into the ground. The gameplay got choked out by all the (mostly) boring cutscenes. The artstyle began to annoy with all the brown, bland colorscheme.
And the story just imploded up it´s own ass and went completely overboard. The last section of the game and ending left the most sour taste in my mouth. It´s also the only section of the game I can remember at all (negatively mind you), the rest of the game as a package was just so forgettable. I even remember the AC!D series more than 4.

I thought it was dope.

Wasn't dissapointed at all when it came out, and was kinda shocked to learn that a lot of people didn't like it.

Didn't mind the cutscenes, and returning to you-know-where was one of my fav "oh shit, no way" moments of all time.

Last time I played it was around 4 years ago when I got the Legacy Collection, and it was still dope playing it directly after MGS3 (which is my fav).

That game has so many memorable moments lol.

Old Snake was a great idea, Solidus' fears being realized was a great concept. Everything else is rubbish. Raiden didn't deserve to be transformed into a cyborg ninja when he had so much potential as a character.

It was obvious that after MGS3 everything had to be about big boss and his friends. Solid Snake was basically just holding the spotlight for him when he's a massively more interesting character. Can't make gold when you're willingly sidelining your best elements just to focus on the worst ones.

The cut scenes were ridiculously long, the gameplay was good but really it can't be that memorable or me as I'm having a hard time thinking about some good moments in the game

It's a mess of a game, but I couldn't help but love it. I'm thankful for the patch that allowed for a full install, even if it took years to get it. I didn't replay it for the longest time solely due to the wacky mandatory installs at the start of every chapter, which would promptly be overwritten any time you went to another chapter. The first two chapters show so much potential for what the game could've been, but it gets really gimmicky after that to the game's detriment in service of trying to wrap up everything about the past five games of anime G. I. Joe.

It's lower tier for me in the MGS series rankings, but it's still a fantastic game. Easily GotY 2008 and one of the best games of last gen.

Absolutely enthralled by it at the time. Felt like one of the best games.

Not played it since before the trophy patch, and have been meaning to re-play the whole series and then play MGS4 for the trophies, but that never happened.

Incredible. Had absurd expectations, and MGS4 exceeded them. In addition, MGO2 was a massive hit. They really nailed the feel of an actual Metal Gear game and combined that with unique multiplayer game types. Metal Gear is such an interesting universe with potential to allow for any character, within any setting, to step up and shine, which is why it boggles my mind as to why Konami wasted time making Survive, when they could have been focusing on something that people might actually care about.

Another thing... It makes me scratch my head when people say Kojima hated the game he was making when he created MGS4. Felt the complete opposite to me. The amount of detail put into every single corner of the game is insane. The mechanics are refined, the gameplay offers a ton of depth and exploration, and there are over ten hours' worth of cutscenes. Not to mention an extensive behind-the-scenes documentary. Things like that makes me think he and his team put a ton of thought into the game and truly cared, but what do I know. He might have said certain things suggesting dissatisfaction, but the end result spoke anything but.

Can't believe it's been 10years. Like holy shit. Anyway, it's a outstanding game. Gameplay and cinematically it's some of the best last gen. The story and ending while being a complete mess at times was just so insane it was still gripping. I actually like melodramatic shit in certain situations so I did not mind the dragged out ending.

Best game of the generation. Helped me wash the taste off of a safe Metal Gear game that felt like an apology to MGS2's craziness. Too bad there won't be MGS6 to do the same for another generic-ass MGS game aka MGSV.

as someone who likes the weird pseudoscience of Metal Gear I loved it, and it has the most Otacon of any Metal Gear game so even better

I have a few problems with the pacing (who wouldn't) and it is weird that basically every returning character is terrible for 90% of the run time (besides Otacon) but it's still a fun ride and the mechanics are some of the best in the series. Just the sheer amount of easter eggs and systems is staggering, I still find something I've never seen before when I replay it.

I also never really understood the hate for the ending, or at least the people who would have preferred the depressing finale. Should Big Boss have shown up? Prooobably not, but the shots with Otacon and Sunny looking at the sunset alongside that beautiful score are perfect.

One of my fave games last gen, super unique and stylish with tons of unlockables. Action stealth was fun too. Far better than 5. The open world ruined it. Mgs 3 and 4 are neck and neck for me

I played it way after launch and went in with low expectations and.. I really liked it. The plot is a mess but I loved the actual game there. My second playthrough on hard, skipping cutscenes was especially fun.

Incredible game, although I'd imagine it would be hard to go back to, gameplay-wise, after playing V. I remember it feeling like a real event when it came out too.

Possibly the most overhyped game of alltime. I cannot think of a bigger letdown. Maybe Homefront and Fable come to my mind.
