I can see why Sega told people to wait for the day one patch. I've had a load of cutscenes that are completely broken. Either the screen is completely black or the camera is stuck on a random bit of scenery. You can still here the dialogue but you can't see anything that's happening. It's even been an issue with the smaller cutscenes in shops.

If this is the build that reviewers have had to play then this is surely going to hurt it.

sega didn't say a thing, that was "team yu" which is a fan community, but for whatever reason they wrote it in a way that made it look like some kind of official announcement. In fact I also believed it was an official announcement until I actually googled what the hell "team yu" was

REALLY weird thing to do if you ask me.

Sega doesn't sound like they're sending review code until day of release. No word on a patch as of yet.

Hmmm... Started playing properly and the cherry blossom tree cutscene and now a cutscene with Fuku-san just cut to some wooden texture or something... Maybe a slight on the voice acting, lol.

I really hope this game isn't as glitched as this in the long run. I don't wanna be that person but I want to enjoy this game and not run into issues all the time.

FFS.

Edit: This is day one patch installed.

I had a similar cutscene glitch but mine was stuck on the pond instead of on a bit of wood.

I've noticed that sometimes the icons stay on the X and Circle buttons on screen even though there's nothing to click on or back out of like when you do need to use them.

Today has been a fucking amazing day. After years of winding myself up over the fact there was simply no easy, normal way to play two influential and highly-revered games that had evaded me for just shy of two decades, I've spent the last 8 hours playing through the first of them. I'm currently trying to secure passage to Hong Kong so I imagine I haven't got much left, and it's just been a really wonderful experience. Suzuki really was ahead of his time.

This will be awesome. It's been a while since I played Shenmue on my Dreamcast. I'm curious about the controls in the remake, since that's one thing that hasn't aged well.

And yes, great OT!

Do we know if the patch currently available is in fact the day one patch? In other words, is it possible there could be yet another update on launch day?

Oof, is the dialog audio actually that bad? Or is it from Twitter compression? I do not remember Shenmue on DC having that seemingly low of bit depth.

There had better be because the cutscene issue is pretty unacceptable, especially in a game with a strong narrative.

I cannot comment on the current build of the game due to embargo terms. However I've personally witnessed a major patch released since my time of reviewing the game that changed almost everything. You can't take early versions that have been leaked and treat them as final versions. That's unfair to Sega and the creators of the HD remaster. Reviewers typically know to wait until the launch patch of a game is released before establishing their final thoughts.

Can you confirm or deny whether or not that's the same patch that regular folks who got an early physical copy got? Maybe by checking the version number?

Reviewers use the regular PSN/Xbox Live while they review games so I'm pretty sure it's the same patch. I can't see how the would release a patch and manage to know if the account that's using the game belongs to a reviewer or someone from the general public.

Judging from the threads that have been made since this remaster was announced, I'd say the reviews are going to be divisive. Especially reviews written by Shenmue fans.
"The load times are shorter. This is a disgrace, as it makes the pace of the game faster and hence different to Lord Yu Suzuki's vision. Also, the disc drive doesn't make weird noises. An absolute disaster."

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Yeah, I'mma keep my copy sealed until it's confirmed that the patches fix this.

Also the voice acting is even more hideous than I remembered.

I started Shenmue 1 HD today, playing for some 6 hours or so (including streaming) with the available patch implemented and had no issues.

Very nice OT topic IrishNinja!

I've private messaged you with a higher quality photo of Yu Suzuki to replace the current photo.

While I'm here here's some extended Shenmue music.

Shenmue was divisive even when it was the hottest blockbuster ever with the most advanced graphics on earth and the biggest Sega marketing campaign backing it.

Of course reviews are going to be all over the place now that the first game is almost 20 years old.

The game came with a patch (Version 1.01) so it will be interesting to see if this is what reviewers are running on. Although, as mentioned earlier, I dunno how a patch could be released for a certain batch of people when loads of copies are out in the wild here in the UK. Happens every time there is a Tuesday release. I'm expecting the same next weekend with Yakuza 2 and Monster Hunter. :)

For those who were also experiencing cutscene glitching, after I restarted the game it hasn't happened since. Dunno if that actually done something or I've just been lucky so far.

All I know about Shenmue is Ryo from Project x Zone 2

yet I am looking forward to this :D. Sounds like it should be a fun time.

All this bug talk is a bit worrisome to me, as I like having physical games complete on disk. Having said that, does anyone know if it is usual for future batches of copies to be patched, or have the patch on disk? Or do I have to pray for a special or different edition? I know there is a Special Edition only for Japan coming later, is there any way to verify what comes on disk before release?

Since everyone else seems to be ignoring this, does this crop up anywhere else in other cutscenes? I sure hope not. :/

I don't know now what I'm into. I've never played this andbyet I have this collection preordered and part 3 Kickstarted. What if I hate them? I have no nostalgia for these old DC games other than Sega fans not being able to shut up about them since the turn of the century.

I hope that the patch on launch day mentioned by Sega fixes these cut scene issues. I'll wait to play the game until this is fixed. I'm on holiday next week anyway so I can wait. I've waited all this time.

havent gotten it but saw these on my timeline, oof. anyone else having bad experiences?

Yes, a few of us on here are all experiencing this. It seems to happen randomly in cutscenes and I've only been able to fix it by restarting the game. It started off in just one or two scenes but eventually it was like that in every cutscene I came across. Once I restarted the game it seem to fix itself, at least for now.

I honestly doubt there is. But if you're willing to wait until Nov, 22th then you might as well ask someone here on ERA if they could test it for you and order thereafter.

My guess would be that the japanese limited edition and the japanese standard edition carry the same discs though.

If someone actually has an educated quess or real info please let the people here know - I'm interested in knowing myself, lol

Yeah, here's hoping that Day 1 patch is significant, is all I can say. I can definitely see the reviews going to town on this release with issues like that and the sound issues.
