Cheeky little duck. I've never experienced duck racing on any of my playthroughs of Shenmue II.

Shenmue is one of those games where even 17 years later, it's still possible to be surprised by it. I wonder what else has been hiding from me all these years, well it's almost time.

same!
and during my first playthrough back in the day, i remember being around the tree near the family dojo one time, and this cutscene of ryo's past training with his dad or something played...it was short, but moving. came to find out there's a whole slew of them! man, there was something special about an era where development (even expensive) was still treated as though you could hide big things from the player to find, or not.

sometimes i still think there's secrets we've yet to find.

So these games have a time limit like Lightning Returns? I like to explore and take my time. No thanks gonna pass on this one.

My local retailer already shipped my copy (PS4), I should get it on monday.

But guys, what's this i have heard about forced 16:9 in the Shenmue 1, making everything looking squeezed together and fat? Like the "good old" PAL days on older European consoles... Was this a misconception from early videos or is the image actually distorted in the final version?

It was a total misconception from a poster that is now banned for refusing to drop it, after other posters did pixel counts to prove that was not the case. There is nothing to worry about there.

they absolutely do, but...i had to youtube the bad endings for running out of time. ive literally never heard of someone achieving them without actively trying, you're given a ton of time (and then some) to explore to your heart's content before they're even a factor.

i don't know many who spent more time collecting gashapon, going for arcade high scores, perfecting moves & looking for hidden games/cutscenes/etc than i did, and i recall still having months of time left when i finally decided to tie things up. it's not really a factor.

My anticipation is growing by the day. Originally, I thought about waiting until closer to the release of Shenmue 3 to play these, but now I'm just going to dive right back in.

Don't worry you have much more time than needed to finish the game, you really need to mess everything up like crazy to get the bad ending.

exploring and taking your time is the whole point of Shenmue.

also i gotta add: boozing now & remembered how i finally got shenmue - i was super hyped (magazines were on about project berkely for a minute, and growing up as a master system kid, i knew to trust suzuki/AM2). i nabbed a launch PS2, and while that system had a few gems in its launch lineup (nothing is ever gonna compare to the dreamcast's launch over here, honestly), i made the terrible mistake of not trusting reviews and went with Summoner.

spoiler: Summoner is a huge piece of shit, and the font was so bad it hurt my eyes.

next day off i had that semester, i took it back & saw Shenmue for sale. to this day, that's about the best trade i'd ever made. my PS2 was a DVD player right up until DMC, MGS2 etc showed up, but i was using sega.net to check the weather forecast & everything, while just being absolutely enveloped in this magical game.

i imported Shenmue 2 (PAL) after the tragic end of the DC, when someone on theGIA or the like told me it had english subs. i spent much of the summer of '02 playing it, and anyone that knows the areas you run through with Shenhua at the end of the final disc know...it's just surreal. again, i miss it like it's a place i'd actually been.

part of me is glad i'm waiting a few more months to replay these. for all my love for them, i've not replayed them since those experiences, that's how great they were. i don't know that i'm quite ready for that journey again, but i know i've gotta do it before III finally shows!

I think those cutscenes are some of my favourite in the first game. Yu Suzuki knows how to direct great cinema.

So true.

Only come here to shit about the game?

There is no timelimit, you can walk arround as long as you want. There is only a clock in the game for day/night circles.
I'm night shitting on it. I couldn't finish Lightning Returns properly because of the time mechanic so I just gave up.
Now that I know it's not a problem in this game it seems. What is the trophy list like? Anyone got a link to it? Will the time mechanic affect getting everything in the trophy list?

list is said to be here, and i think you're good - again, taking your time & exploring is very much the tao of the series. they're not gonna do something to go against the beauty of that design

You will never ever be absolutely bothered by the "time limit". I can almost say it will be nearly impossible for you to reach the time limit and get the bad ending.

I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S ACTUALLY COMING OUT!

Been wanting this for so long I even played the buggy emulation of the first game over.

Getting it on PC so I can potentially mod the cutscenes and/or textures and such. Also 4K :P

FUN FACT from my Shenmue II experience. I actually won the duck race on my very first try. I bet on the white Duck i believe.

Also, I made myself rich from arm wrestling alone.

I'm a little sad I didn't get to sculpt + paint my dragon and pheonix mirrors yet (which I plan to do on live stream and then hang on my wall) but there is always Shenmue 3!

Thought about getting the PS4 version initially for the trophies and then remembered I don't care about trophies. Kiwami 2 though... That's gonna have to wait until after Shenmue 1&2 and Spider-Man

Great OT.

I envy all of you who can already play this. I decided to go digital so I have to wait a bit longer... will get the Japanese collectors edition to add to my physical collection.

30fps lock, even on the PC version? That's unfortunate. I'll probably still pick the collection up because it's gaming history, but damn. Wish they could have fixed that.

Couldn't be more excited about this, even though I'm probably not getting it right at launch, but just knowing its an option is pretty amazing. Feels like we've been waiting so long. I loved the first Shenmue, and I've never played the sequel.

So if this comes through the letterbox today, should I just hold off until the day one patch? I've been hearing some slightly concerning things.

Oh, can I get some cherry blossoms on my avatar please? I'd like to broadcast my devotion to Shenmue around this special time!

Mine has downloaded patches for both games already. The one for the first game was almost 2gb.

I have been waiting forever for Shenmue III, and when that was announced I wanted I & II to finally come to modern systems. My dream has finally come true!

My PS4 copy has already shipped (ShopTo in the UK), but I will be playing first on PC.

Edit: Forgot to add, wonderful OT IrishNinja.

Awesome to see the OT up.

I was thinking just to jump into Shenmue 2 since I replayed S1 a few years ago, but I decided I will start from the beginning. I enjoyed the first game quite a bit and want to find hidden scenes like everyone is talking about.

I remember reading about Shenmue back in the Dreamcast days, and I was a fan of the system, but didn't get to play it until a bit later, sometime a few years after the gamecube came out. I had actually stumbled into a used copy at Half Price Books, so I took it upon myslef to buy it even though I didn't have a Dreamcast anymore. Much later I finally bought one again, but it broke. Fast forward some time, I got another, and finally played and beat it. It was worth it.

Sadly, my import copy of S2 was scratched so I couldn't continue past disc 1. And these were the woes of trying to play this series before this rerelease. I'm glad they are now available for everyone to have.
