Hi all.
My gtx 580 died again. It died 1.5 years ago but i baked it and brought it back to life. It died again just now as I was working on my research and thesis. Idk if I should bake it again. Im asking friends if they have spare gpus once they get off work. In the mean time....any ideas? I can't afford a new gpu atm.

Thanks

Whisper to it that if it doesn't get its shit together through this thesis you're replacing it with a 2080 Ti

Does your motherboard have an onboard one?

Not running a CPU that has internal graphics I assume? Maybe try getting a 930 or 1030? They're about $70 or less.

You should honestly be surprised that it lived as long as it did. Because baking does practically nothing. Even quality re-ball of the GPU is a temporary solution.

As your card is that old, I'd recommend you to get just something, even a cheap GPU like 1030 would actually be an upgrade. I'd recommend looking up some few year old AMD GPUs on craigslist or something.

Judging by the age of the graphics card, it's unlikely.

Personally, I'd just buy the a cheap GPU from ebay until you can afford a better one.
I wouldn't rule that out actually, I have a space old PC with Pentium D that I use for various tinkering and it has iGPU.

If you can't get that one working, a second hand 750ti on ebay would be a very cheap temporary option. But it's technically slower...

A GT 1030 would be a good option too but be aware that there are 2 versions of the card, with the EXACT SAME NAME, one with faster memory and another one with a slower memory, and the one with the slower memory is a SHITLOAD slower than the other one. Be careful with that.

Basically there's a version with GDDR5 memory and a version with DDR4 memory. Avoid the DDR4 one like the plague.

As was mentioned, get a budget GPU for around $50 on Amazon if you can afford it, especially if you need to get basic work done. I have a nvidia 8400 gs as a backup in my closet in case my current gpu dies for whatever reason.

I should mention you shouldn't plan on playing anything that is after say Dota 2 release date wise though.

Warcraft III would be good though!

What is your CPU OP? Just pull out your GPU and use the onboard video if it has one.

I'm surprise it lasted that long. Baking is a temporary fix.

Buy a used GPU. 580 is pretty old at this point you could probably upgrade to a 960 for like 50 bucks.

Yeah getting a better replacement won't be that much. Place a WTB post in the sales thread and I bet you will get cards that are even better for under $50.

When do you need it by? I have a practically brand new GTX 770 card that I can give you if you want it. PM me if timeline works out for you.

Hasn't onboard video been standard on motherboards since like voodoo3 days?

Sous Vide it to get it heated through more evenly, then finish it with a pan-sear before serving.

Hi all I found a spare 8800GTX in my garage. I wonder if it can run Crysis? :P Thanks for all the advice though! Yeah I'm legit surprised it lasted me 1+ year as well lol. I have a 2600k on a P-something deluxe board in case you were wondering.

I had the exact same thing happen with my gtx 580 and I'm still using it. I didn't bake it but opened it up and used a heat gun. It went bad again after about six.months. But after using the heat gun again it's working so far. I'd advise you not to play any games with it after using a heat gun.

I don't know much about baking or whether it's different from using the heat gun directly or not.
