Skull Kid shouldn't be in smash because Zelda already has loads of characters and the main characters + villain are in, it doesn't need more until the franchise gets a new main recurring character.
I actually stan for Pig Ganon, particularly his LttP incarnation. But other than that, I'm good on Zelda reps.

There are plenty of relevant and interesting newcomers to pull from for Smash Ultimate. It's just that for once they're seemingly going for the nostalgia bucks, which is doing a good deal of those newer characters a disservice. We've already had Ashley thrown into the consolation prize bucket, and I have no reason to believe we're gonna get reps for Rhythm Heaven, Xenoblade, ARMS or TW101 either.
What I meant was that relevancy is the least interesting thing to me when it comes to making unique roster choices and I hate when people use it as a way to shoo away potential newcomers.

So games that he hasn't played or barely ever played probably won't get any representation? Outside of a ballot-like situation I guess?
I will be honest. I wouldn't put it behind Sakurai having played almost the whole Famicom-era Nintendo first party games. He's the one who brings up characters like Ayumi Tachibana, Lip, Mach Rider, etc and comments about how much he likes their games and stuff. I think he's the one that personally picks the trophies too.

I think the only series I can imagine him not getting into is Startropics because of lack of JP release, but even then he added Punch Out to Smash.

Isabelle is more popular and relevant than 90% of the characters discussed here, so it's kinda sad I think she will be a dash fighter or that people really think she doesn't "deserve" to be in because something like "fighting potential". If the game had only warriors/fighters, it would be very boring.

I'm banking on Isabelle being an unique character. She's way too important to be a simple echo fighter.

Pretty sure we'll at least be seeing Springman as DLC. As for Xenoblade, I'm not sure there's anyone interesting enough to add in as a new fighter. 101 sucked, so no thanks. And Rhythm Heaven is super niche.

I wish threads didn't have a post limit, it would be amazing to see the constantly growing total number of posts combined across all iterations of this topic.

It's almost like people have different tastes.

Your right but saying Smash 4's roster sucked is certainly going to make me call those taste into question.

It's ultimatly based on the individual, I obviously don't expect a lot of people to agree with my apathy to the current newcomers, but then what else is there to discuss if not each other's opinions?

I kept seeing you repeat same thoughts over and over. We get it. You are paranoid about the roster and acting like certain characters are in the game when they aren't.

What I'm not fan of what you did is making fans feel bad about characters that they wanted to see because their tastes are different than your.

Can you just stop shaming those fans because they aren't too invested into characters you liked.

I'm not arguing against the fans, I'm arguing against the notion that there is some sort of inherent wrong or evil with trying to bring more representation to the game. The fans can want whatever they want, and I don't care what they voted for in the ballot. There is just no reason for them to pull disingenuous shit like "I'm totally above gender, characters should get in Smash due to their own merits", and there is also no reason for them defend a hypothetical roster with just one new unique female character. If they're satisfied with it, that's fine; you can be satisfied with something and still recognize its problems.

Why are people predicting Inceneroar over Decideye?

I thought the latter was clearly more popular. The cat couldn't even trump him in getting into Pokken.

As much as I disliked the Miis, they still represent something that wasn't represented in Smash before.

I hated their implementation though, they're more like a dress up character creator when they should have been based on actual Mii games.

Villains are an underrepresented minority in the world, I see.
I'd be happy to get more female characters, but at the end of the day Smash can only ever be symptomatic of the industry at large. Video game stories have, traditionally, featured male in male power fantasy positions, with females rarely outside of a supporting role. If we want Smash to truly get more female representation we need to get video games starring female characters first due to the nature of the game.

I'm kinda torn, because she doesn't really do all the stuff villager pulls his moveset from, but she's enough of a blank slate move set wise anyway that it doesn't really matter.

People talk like characters like Midna or Ashley aren't more relevant or popular to their series than characters like Skull Kid. lol
.

Well, I like Midna and love Ashley (I honestly thought she was going to be a newcomer in Ultimate, and it was disappointing to see her again as an AT), but, how is Midna more relevant to Zelda than Skull Kid? If I'm not wrong, Midna has appeared in one Zelda game, while Skull Kid has appeared in three (OOT, MM and TP). I don't even know if Midna is more popular than Skull Kid currently.

The Xenoblade series is full of interesting characters for Smash. Going with just X and 2's main characters, there's already a lot of potential there.

Everything is political in life. But the point is just about the roster possibly just being nostalgia pandering to 20yo guys or how people are dismissive of anything not being part of this SNES/64 nostalgia picks.

I personally loved Smash 4's approach towards newer characters.

Melee and Brawl relied too heavily on nostalgia, how sad it is that Brawl's most recent IP was fucking Pikmin (2001)..

Just look at that console rep pic that usually gets posted here. It's NES/SNES madness.

I hope Ultimate keeps a fair balance this time around, but ballot picks being dominated by NES/SNES/N64/GCN era kids gives me little hope.

So far we have:

- Ridley (NES/1986)
- Simon Belmont (NES/1986)
- Daisy (GB/1989)
- Richter Belmont (PC Engine/1993)
- King K. Rool (SNES/1994)
.
.
.
- Dark Samus (GCN/2002)
.
.
.
- Chrom (3DS/2013)
- Inkling (WiiU/2015)
What newer characters would you want, though? As far as I can tell Inkling was the only essential one since 4 and they got that one.

No one can say Smash 4 roster sucked.

I'll take being disappointed in it, but sucks? Nah, that just tells me you're upset some of your favorites didn't get in. Smash 4 should be praise for its variety

Yeah the man is kinda crazy if you consider all of that.

I'm really just curious how he actually decides to choose characters. Many of them are relevant, yes, but many also are not. Most of them have global appeal but some only really have western appeal and some only really have Japanese appeal. It really feels like there's no method to his madness, we can argue over and over about all of these rules and patterns but he's just gonna wind up picking who he wants to.

What I'm really getting at is- I wonder if he played or enjoyed Eternal Darkness?

I mean i could equally say saying the ultimate roster sucks call taste into question, but I dont because not everyone likes the same stuff.

It's just that this thread is getting dicey with saying that people who want fan picks and certain characters are not being thoughtful of equality.

Miis are dress up characters though. They dress up to suit the game they are part of.

Isabelle is one of those characters that is way too big to pass up.

But how she will be incorporated is beyond me.

Echo is what I'm ANTICIPATING, and a unique fighter would be BONUS.

I love Isabelle. I just saw a picture of her with boxing gloves on in-game in Happy Home Designer the other day!

The Smash 4 roster was underwhelming due to non-characters, which is what the Mii's and Wii Fit trainer were. You can technically count the Villager here too because he's just an avatar and not an established character.

Then we just got 4 Fire Emblem characters and Shulk (and Cloud) so we also got an overload of JRPG characters last time.

lol no

The whole point of Miis is to create something you want to create. What the hell is the point of them being all about the games they were in? There's a reason why they have the Smash emblem.

I'll wait till the full roster is an before I question it.

Right now we are arguing on characters we have no clue about, from a leaker who's being acting weird after being right about a few Characters.

Because I don't care about characters who series are already heavily represented, I want more unique franchises in Smash because I prefer the crossover aspect of it to anything else. Smash 4 came out at a time when Nintendo were releasing a lot of games from the same franchises over and over again, so Smash 4 skewing towards newer characters meant there were a lot of boring additions I didn't care about.

The Mii fighters are 3 valid movesets though. I hope that they are given 1 nice cohesive pair of specials and are generally balanced this time around.

Customs were one of the worst parts of Smash 4, which is a shame, because I was so excited for them initially.

Threads didn't have a post limit back in the Brawl days. The Brawl thread ended up being so large it was impossible to archive, and it even caused problems in the data base.

Vergeben said the Gen 7 Pokemon wasn't going to be Decidueye, Lycanroc, or Mimikyu. Out of the Pokemon TPC is pushing, that really only leaves Incineroar and I guess Tapu Koko.

If I was in charge of Smash and I didn't have an anti-Zelda bias like Sakurai then I would have completely revised Link and Zelda's movesets and Zelda would be in her BotW incarnation (the best one).

Link:
Neutral Special: Hero's Bow- Shoots his bow but now you can aim it. Used in the air, his falling speed drastically slows.
Side Special: Flurry Rush- Like his old final smash, Link dashes forward in a line and slashes and stuns the first enemy he contacts.
Down Special: Urbosa's Fury- A lot like Pikachu's thunder but instead of being centered on him directly, the lightning appears on both sides of him.
Up Special: Revali's Gale- Link whirls really high straight into the air. Vertical movement only.

While holding the jump button, Link pulls out his glider and sort of floats like Peach but faster and with more horizontal movement. Daruk's protection is his shield and his final smash is an ancient arrow. His normals all use his sword and shield. I don't know how you would do Mipha's Grace.

As for Zelda, I'm still working on her. But the gist is her moveset revolves entirely around the Sheikah slate since she's a scientist in the game. She would get bombs, magnesis, time-stop etc.

Both are only really main characters in one main game each (MM and TP). And TP sold much more - 8.8M x 3.6M, I think. I love MM, but it seems to be more of a late cult following, while TP was hugely popular from the start.

What I'm really getting at is- I wonder if he played or enjoyed Eternal Darkness?
... maybe.......

Punch-Out!! has seen releases in Japan, even if they weren't popular.
I know, but the releases were very minor and the biggest one (Punch Out for Wii) only sold like 20k. I just brought it up because I think it's the closest to Star Tropics anyway.
