No thanks.

You can't just throw out a late ass port onto a Nintendo system and earn a coveted spot in Smash.

Fuck that.

And this speaks nothing of the quality of the game, the port, or whether or not I'd actually like to see that or not. I would, but as I said, I don't think they've earned that yet. And I had a funny feeling something like this would be the case. Plus I don't really know of any super iconic Diablo character, nor do I think they would even fit in well with Smash.

And I say this as someone who's excited for Diablo 3 on Switch.

Yup. No idea who I would pick besides him though. As far as being iconic. Not even sure I'd go for Diablo (or a Diablo character), Tracer, or any other Blizzard character first. Deckard Cain would be fun as an assist trophy though!

If we're talking about fitting with the overall Smash universe and artstyle though, I'd probably go with LucasArts point n' clicks. The more I think about it, the more I'm liking the idea of having Guybrush Threepwood in there. I know it's never going to happen, but it's fun to entertain anyway. Going back to Blizzard, the Lost Vikings are a great fit.

Diablo was a fucking goober as of Diablo III, and could easily be replaced by a hundred other characters who'd actually contribute something to the Smash roster.

"If Diablo on Smash never happens, how about Diablo in a theoretical PSBR sequel?"

"How about you shut your mouth before I punch your teeth out?"

I've been watching Japanese reactions to the Smash direct (because Youtube started recommending them to me) and more and more I am convinced a unique character doesn't get in without wide international appeal whereas Echoes and Assist Trophies are used for characters with fairly regional appeal.

Ridley being the exception.

I was honestly surprised with how consistent the excitement for K. Rool was.

Illidan, Arthas, Thrall and Garrosh would be better than Diablo

Alao if we're going to list our dream additions, give me Adam from Streets of Rage, Akira from Virtua Fighters, Joe Musashi from Shinobi or Alex Kidd :p

That's only partially true, in the sense that Western appeal seems more important than international (i.e. Western + Japan). I've been watching those reactions as well, and 3 things stuck out to me:
1) As you said, most Japanese reactions knew K. Rool and were excited about him
2) However, many of them, in their reactions, were like "I bet people overseas are excited!", as if to say "this is to please Westerners"
3) Almost every single one I watched (maybe 10+ reaction vids) had absolutely no idea who Simon and Richter Belmont were, even though Castlevania is one of those Japanese classics. Many of them didn't even know what Castlevania/Akumajou Dracula was. Granted, I'm sure many of those people are fairly young, but if you're enough of a gaming enthusiast to watch reveal trailers of a game that celebrates gaming history and to put your reaction online, it's still weird. They seemed more excited about Dark Samus for whatever reason lol.

I think they're trying to strike a balance between regional and international appeal, even beyond echo fighters. Also, they're trying to build awareness for series that are not that popular yet, which is why we got a redesigned Pit in Brawl and all those Fire Emblem characters even though nobody used to care about FE in the West.

If there's a bias, I'd say it's more towards Western tastes than Japanese tastes at this point. But they'll do that with their more beloved Japanese IPs. It's not gonna become "Call of Duty vs. Halo" overnight, if at all.

See, my counterpoint to that is that I've consistently seen that exact same reaction from western viewers in their late teens/early 20s.

I'm not even the biggest fan of them or Bayonetta getting in either.

The other two are moral victories for Nintendo though as those characters were both hugely instrumental in shaping Playstation's image and success.
So I appreciate them getting in from that standpoint, but I still can't shake that they're actually more associated with PlayStation so they don't really fit. Snake at least had some NES games and Twin Snakes. As for Cloud I would much rather have an FF character that has more significance for Nintendo like Cecil, Moogles, Black Mages, Terra, Locke, etc.

Bayonetta represents nothing except for an obvious attempt to get a niche/hardcore character for the brownie points. And I'm sure she was easier to get than a buncha other alternatives.

I was gonna say Diablo characters are poor fit, but fuck, if they put Deckard Cain in the game Smash would be the second game i'd main him in!

+1 to OW characters would be better fit.

But the ultimate Smash pick from Blizzard would be The lost Vikings.

Terrans from Starcraft would be the only ones I think truly iconic enough to earn a character slot.

An Overwatch character would work too but I still prefer sticking to more classic characters as opposed to newer games.

Terrans over Tracer any day.

Why not Jim Raynor or Kerrigan?

They have appeared in a Nintendo Console before

I feel like you are constructing your own narratives on why people got in besides " people really wanted them and they could get it and they weren't already assists trophies and they had dev time for it "

I think any publisher would like to have their character in Super Smash Bros.

I do wonder how open Nintendo will be with their character selection in a) the final product and b) potential DLC down the road.

Either way, Sakurai can't disappoint.

I think Tracer and Winston would rep the best both being the "Mascots" of the series... And Wrecking Ball would be a pretty nice fit too but he's probably too new to start being a guest in other games.

As for Diablo characters... I think Barbarian is the only one that is iconic...while Diablo is too evil and synonymous with Satan to be in a Smash game. Maybe Cain would fit and be charming with horadric cube stuff.

The most important news imo from this article is that they would like to have Bowser and Pig Ganon as bosses in Diablo.... This would be so so so good.

Chill. Did you read the article ? Gameinformer ask them "if one of your character could be in Smash, who would you like it to be ?", and their answer is "Diablo". They did not straight up said "we want Diablo in Smash !" a la Team Meat style, and they couldn't say "we don't want any of our character in smash" because it would be pretentious as fuck. Chill man.

ofcourse Blizzard would say that, its literally free advertising for Diablo 3.
Also, fuck no to Tracer being in SSBU. Her abilities make no sense for implementing in the game. I swear people say this shit without giving proper consideration to what her moveset would actually be like in the game.

I don't know how it handle a Deckard Cain reveal. Richter was already a blessing, but Deckard... it would be a dream come true.
