Splasher is currently on sale and it's really good. Make sure to go for all the letters.

I've wanted this one since it came out last year but I'm holding out until it's at least 50% off. It's been on sale for $12, $11, and now $10, so we're slowly inching there! lol

Oh yeah, I forgot about Splasher. I will have to get that one! I don't love the art style, but it looks like a fun time.

The other two look pretty interesting, though I don't know if I'll get those. I'm just really picky with art styles and prefer to have some more color.
Yeah, sounds like we have pretty similar taste in platformers. I was also put off by the art style of Splasher, but the gameplay looks really solid and fun.

As for Slime-San, I recommend that one as well. I initially wrote it off as a weaker derivative of Super Meat Boy, but the game has tons of personality and tons and tons of well-designed levels with their own unique hooks. It has also received two huge, free content updates since release. It's really good.

Slime-San has a demo on the eShop, so I highly recommend checking it out. It's what sold me on buying the full game in the first place.

Hey guys. I'm looking for indie platformer recommendations. Preferably sticking as closely to standard platforming as possible (ie Mario, Donkey Kong Country, etc.). I have and love Celeste. Looking for some good ones that I may have missed. Thanks!

'The End is Nigh' is my favorite platmorfer in the system. It's very close to 'Celeste', and this is surprising. Because is one of these examples in video game history in which two developers will release in the same time-frame two near-indentical concepts.

In the same way as 'Celeste', 'The End is Nigh' try to expand the concept of the hard-as-nails platformers popularized by 'Super Meat Boy', by creating an explorable open world divided in interconnected levels, in which you can try to find secrets.

There is also what I like to define as "environmental puzzles" integrated in the traditional platforming sections. You know, in the same way as in 'Celeste', for the hardest secrets, you will need to study the layout of a screen, how the platforms are moving, how you can interact with each element. So at the end, to solve some parts implies a short of logic. And this is in my opinion the great revolution that both games will bring to the formula. They are not only about skill.

I coincide with McMillen in define this game as a take in the 'Metroid' formula, but in a simplified and minimalistic way.

There are not upgrades, but there is an explorable open and interconnected map. And most importantly, thanks to its brilliant ambience, it triumphs in creating the same oppressive mood that 'Super Metroid'.

Both games have an impressive constructed universe, and both games are about the subject of depression. Of course, in 'The End is Nigh', things go even further because it's Edmun McMillen, so he uses an even more darker and twisted approach. There are subjects like suicide, cancer. And contrary to his other games, while there is an humorous writing, sure, he is not taking these subjects in a funny or superficial way. He really wants to create in the player the sensation of being lost in a corrupted and depressive world. And he absolutely nails this ambience through an impressive art style based in dark tones which is full of detail, with a memorable soundtrack based in rock arrangements of classic compositions.

I consider 'Celeste' and 'The End is Night' masterpieces in the genre.

But I think that 'The End is Nigh' is the superior game. Because it has a type of finesse in its controls, the use of physics, the game balance, that simply, it's a step further.

And that it's fine, it's from the creator of 'Super Meat Boy'. His skills designing levels are only comparable to Takashi Tezuka in the glory days of 'Yoshi's Island'.

Edmund considers this game as his great achievement as a developer, but it's also truth that it's his less commercial game. It's not a game for all the publics, and it has been designed to not be for a general audience. It's even harder than 'Super Meat Boy'. It's punishing. It's oppressive. Sometimes, it will generate you anxiety, and this is intentional.

You really need to be in the mood for this game. Contrary to 'Celeste', whose great value was to be able to reach a general audience. And I love Matt Thorson for this.

He's talking about City Connection in Caravan Mode.

Star Force is a really solid old shooter. Pretty remarkable for it's era, and it's so dependent on skill. Lemme message you for some Ninja Kid tips!

As of maybe 12 hours ago....things changed there just a bit OrakioRob! :)

Epilexia i used the strategies you shared with wesman for Levels+ and, damn, they were good tips! Think i will dig into some of those niconico videos

Epilexia and bytesized I was actually going to reply later about those tips! They're pretty awesome, aren't they?

I think I've had a few ahah type moments with this game.

1. I noticed that there was an "up next" card. Doh!
2. I finally noticed you could merge coin cards, and Epilexia pushing for the higher the better, though u still haven't maxed out past 5....
3. I got that thunderbolt power up, which I had mi clue about prior. I kinda feel like it's almost....cheating. Did you get that one yet bytesized?

I remember looking at NicoNico for Splatoon 2 game okay, I'll have to jump and see some of the Levels+ game play too!

Yeah, the thunderbolt is always available, you get one per game and you can activate it yourself or let it self activate once you cannot make any more moves.

My main strategy right now is to keep the monsters on the lower row, coins in the first 2 columns and blue pieces on the 3 columns from the right.

A very crucial strategic aspect on top of all that is the use of the one coin pieces to move more flexibly around the board since these can be acquired by any blue piece and they also appear with regularity so you can dispose of them without fear too.

The NA eShop currently has 970 available games, so it seems like it will reach about 1,000 games before the end of August. The EU eShop has a bit fewer games, so it seems like EU might not reach 1,000 games until September.

So many games are releasing now that many games don't get reviews. For example, Nintendo Life earlier had a policy to review all Wii U and 3DS games. With the Switch, that isn't a practical possibility anymore.

As always, thanks to tolkir for these threads, which helps a lot in the eShop jungle.
I think Nintendo really needs to work on organzing the eShop formally and providing better visibility beyond what they do. It's very hard to discover games that have been out for awhile if they aren't on sale.

They need a sidebar link to a Genre/Category page.

They should model the eShop after Netflix.

Each Genre/Category has subgenres
There's a row of game icons for each sub genre
Rows can be populated by release, alphabetical, price or popularity

So for example, you navigate to Categories and under each listing is a row of pertinent game icons.

Then you click "Arcade" and it takes you to a new page of subgenres, each with its own row of games

Fighting
Shooter
Pinball
Puzzle
Etc.

Then you click on Fighter and it takes you to another page with

2D
3D
Oldschool

And each of those sorts a row of games accordingly.

Ideally you would be able to reach "Fighting" through "Action," "Multiplayer" and "Arcade" and games would appear in any relevant subgenre.

The idea is that each game has many more opportunities to be seen, while someone browsing can hone onto the particulars they are in the mood for.

It shouldn't be 1:1 modeled after Netflix, that wouldn't be conducive to selling games versus suggesting movie. But take that as the starting point to model the eShop around.

Also, with the remarkable attach rate of software on Switch, folders absolutely need to be a priority.

Even though I'm not huge into the art style (it's well done; I just prefer more color in my platformers), this all sounds very interesting. I will look into getting it, maybe during a sale. Thank for the info and impressions!

Hey, so I was about to buy Nitro Ball when I noticed something concerning.

The screenshots look like shit.

I don't mean the actual game looks bad, I mean the presentation of the game aka the emulation wrapper.

I've never bought a Johnny Turbo release, only Hamster and Zerodiv.

Is it true that there's no way to turn off filtering in these games? I prefer pixels crisp and not offering a No Filter option is bonkers.

Edit: Some more details on Nitro Ball courtesy of Video Chums' 8/10 review of this release

https://videochums.com/review/johnny-turbos-arcade-nitro-ball

johnny-turbos-arcade-nitro-ball-2.jpg

johnny-turbos-arcade-nitro-ball-4.jpg

johnny-turbos-arcade-nitro-ball-6.jpg

Upon shooting some enemies, they roll around like pinballs so if you aim well, you can roll them into holes and such which grants bonuses such as score boosts and power-ups. You'll even run into timed challenges that usually task you with defeating a certain amount of enemies. If you succeed, you get treated to a fun scene like cheerleaders doing a little routine as you get awarded stuff like luxury cars, mansions, yachts, and private jets. The power-ups include weapons like the very cool Ring Laser and if you're lucky, you get to try out the Rail Blaster. Another power-up will have you turn into a ball just like Samus so you can conquer the pinball challenges easier.

Nitro Ball is such a crazy game. As you progress through its campaign, you'll traverse 5 distinct stages: Strange Football, Combat Field, Ghost Town, Aliens World, and Space Station. You'll encounter a ton of off-the-wall scenarios, enemies, and bosses along the way that allow the gameplay to remain fresh and exciting throughout. Some portions even feel like they're ripped straight from '80s movies like The Terminator, Alien, and Ghostbusters which is just awesome. Overall, it's one varied and thrilling arcade game.

One thing that's fantastic about Nitro Ball is that 3 players can enjoy it simultaneously. Although you can work together, the scoring system is competitive and impressively well-implemented. For example, whenever a player uses a continue, their score takes a big hit so players who survive longer will have a much better chance of winning the whole game. It is a game show, after all.

Yeah, fuck it, I'm buying it lol

I may skip this game now.

You can turn them off and rotate the screen too! Not a terrible amount more though... There is a save state and continue feature as well.

It's my first Johnny Turbo release, and I'm not very impressed compared to Hamster and what they offer, for the price. Though I wish Hamster as well would offer some more historical documents on games. I think M2 is the only company that does anything like that on mass scale, outside of a collection.

Really interesting game, that does capture...some...of the odd spirit of Smash TV! Shooting is only sadly the direction you're facing though.

Isn't that like every other 8-way shooter of the era, though? Shock Troopers, etc?

When you say turn them off, do you mean you can have clear, unfiltered pixels? Or is bilinear filtering always on?

What's really impressive about this, is it will be 60fps and 720p handheld, and I think I read 920p, docked. I hope this sells well to bring Hearthstone and Over watch over also, even though I've personally stopped playing both. Honestly, this is the game I'm most excited to see from them.

Titan Quest, Victor Vran, and Diablo 3 in less than half a year, how fantastic! What a fulfilling sentence to be able to type! (Let's get Torchlight 2 or that new game coming out next year on the system too!!!)

Seriously, what is happening regarding Johnny Turbo games in Europe? Only the first 3 have been released on the European eShop. I remember there being some delay with them, especially Bad Dudes (which is the only one I've bought so far), but after that none the last 7 releases have seen the light of day over here. What's the deal? I know I want at least 5 of those unreleased EU games they have up on the American shop.

I always thought Smash TV and Total Carnage allowed Robotron 2084 like control? No?

It's a bit softer than the clean Hamster look. I'd prefer it to be a bit sharper, but I can't tell exactly what type of filtering this application is using. There are about 6-7 filter optiona, one of them being off, which I can't recall exactly how that's stated being away from the game presently.

I'm at the point with these titles, if I want to play the game and have fun, this series might have value, but for serious emulation and online leader boards, Hamster and M2 are where it's at.

Ok, so it seems like you definitely can't turn off bilinear filtering on any of the Johnny Turbo games. That's what gives it that soft look. It's a complaint that every release has had yet they seem obstinate about not allowing you to completely turn the filtering off.

Truly obnoxious. These are extremely low-effort releases.

As for online leaderboards, I'm used to not having them in Zerodiv's Psikyo ports.

Btw, Smash TV does use a dualstick set up in the arcade, but that's not what I was thinking of when I mentioned 8-way shooting.

I'm in the same boat of not understanding the comparison between 'Nitro Ball' and 'Smash TV'.

'Smash TV' comes from a tradition started with 'Space Dungeon' and later popularized and vastly improved by 'Robotron: 2084'. The defining mechanic is to use a second stick to aim, so for example you can walk in one direction and shoot in the opposite direction.

'Nitro Ball' comes from a tradition started by 'Commando', really popular amongst Japanese developers, with a lot of games continuing this tradition. 'Ikari Warriors' and 'Mercs' amongst the most populars, with some obscure masterpieces such as 'Out Zone' by Toaplan.

All of that said, incredible game 'Nitro Ball', and crazy stuff how they make a parody/homage to the US culture, including twisted things as the pinball sections.

The sad thing, as always with these Johnny Turbo releases, it's that they haven't included DIP switches. So you can't change the difficulty level. So at the end, is paying for incomplete versions of the games in which you can't play all the patterns designed by the original creators.

Even more frustrating is how the collection have missed all the recent releases in Europe.

Incomplete version or not, 'Nitro Ball' is one of these rare games that taking into account that is the first console port, I'm interested in buying. Even knowing that I'm paying for an incomplete version.

Because as I said, it's really really crazy stuff.

Yeah, it's more the thematic elements than direct gameplay. You actually collect prizes for bonus points like Smash TV....! "Big money, big prizes....I LOVE IT!"

Oh, I recall this being blurbed about, and actually incidentally pre-ordered it on Amazon Japan today, haha! I wasn't entirely sure it was this game though.

And yeah, I'd say buying this game is more about indulging in its weirdness than quality. I truly wish they put more resources into these ports, I really do.

We already have people in the thread saying pinball sucks. Get'em.

I'm in the opposite spectrum with this game.

I think that the pinball mechanic looks fantastic, like a high budget version of 'Pinball FX3'.

But about these female characters and the current trend of these type of Japanese artistic designs based in fanservice... I prefer to reserve my opinion :)

The physics look highly questionable, though...

...which is in-line with the franchise.

Why the fuck do the Johnny Turbo releases not have a filter option? What is wrong with them? I refuse to buy these games until they add that.

I can't imagine anyone buying that game to practice ball passes or drop catching.
Sure, but you still need physics that feel good.

I mean sure, the physics of games like Metroid Prime Pinball and Kirby's Pinball Land are pretty weird, but those games are constrained by their hardware.

For me, if the physics are bad it doesn't matter how good the rest of the game is. It's like how a platformer isn't fun if the jumping doesn't feel good, or a shooter feels bad if the guns feels weightless and weak.

aren't they the guys who made the unplayable PAL version of Devil Survivor Overclocked despite the US version working fine.

And yeah, the Nitro Ball release is the first one where that ugly blur filter has really been bothersome to me. It doesn't really bug me much in Express Raider, Shootout or Super Burgertime, but it kinda did in the two Dark Seal games and Two Crude, and ESPECIALLY here since it's around even in vertical mode which is freaking stupid. Also, you can still fire with the buttons with the joy con is attached in vertical mode, but the right stick doesn't move you. If they just had both sticks move the player, then it could be perfect to play in vertical mode without detaching the joycons and being impractical, but they didn't do that..

Ooh, LA Noire is fantastic. It isn't the prettiest version of the game (the open world is constantly "materializing" fifteen feet ahead of your car) but in cutscenes and interrogations it's still impressive, and the performance capture holds up very well. The episodic structure is perfect for quick bursts of play; I look forward to cruising around '40s LA once again.

The lack of dipswitch options is really a bigger problem, one I hadn't been aware of previously.

There's no way to adjust difficulty and other parameters.

I regret hyping up Nitro Ball. The actual game is awesome but these Flying Tiger releases are garbage.

It looks like an interesting game. I never let little things like fanservice dissuade me from a game I'm interested in.
Incidentally, The Coma didn't review particularly well due to unresponsive controls.

I didn't think I was going to bother buying Diablo III again since I have the base game on PS4, but I think I'm going to end up buying it anyway.

720p60fps undocked. That's amazing.

I dunno, there is very little elitist about Diablo, especially the third game. It's as mainstream as you can probably get, moreso than DW.
Aha, that's just a joke because a lot of people turn their nose up at musous but will play Diablo. It's a pretty similar itch being scratched.

Man I didn't notice the Swtich indie lineup was so insane. So many interesting things to try from last month on that OP.

Anyone try Castlestorm yet? I enjoyed what little I played on the PC but it just seems more suited to portability. Just wondering if it has any performance issues or long load times.

I very much doubt performance would be a problem with Castestorm. It was one of the first Wii U titles, before Unity support was available. And it ran well on Wii U at 1080p. They promised native resolution in both docked an portable at 60 fps for the Switch version.
