I don't understand Filip. He is spending his time editing and producing top notch content in his YouTube Channel. Writing his thoughts and opinions seems to be the easier part.... why is he short cutting that?!

Maybe he simply doesn't care for the content of his productions? He might be not interested in gaming and could do the same shit about cameras, cars or wristwatches.
He's a fraud. And talking about stuff you don't care for is time consuming labour.

Many new members are asking for forgiveness and empathy for Filip in this thread.

With a couple of posts or below 50.

It is strange...

I mean... writing might be easy, but writing well is damn hard.

The one sentiment I am seeing a lot here is "reviewing games is literally the easiest thing in the world" or "writing is really easy". Now, I'm going to put aside my irritation at this trivialization of writing, or reviewing games, and try to explain to you why you are wrong:
  • Writing is not easy. It flat out is not, and if you think it is, I want to see you attempt to write yourself. Some of the world's best scientists, lawyers, and medical professionals struggle with writing, because presenting your thoughts in a coherent and logical manner that is also instantly engaging to the audience is not "just write a few paragraphs". Anyone can "write", writing well is extremely difficult
  • Reviewing games is also not easy. You have to play dozens, if not more (depending on game length) hours of a game, you have to formulate your own thoughts on it, and present them in a nuanced manner that's also logical, coherent, and engaging. Anyone on Era who has finished a game probably knows a this- most posts on a game are barely two paragraphs. If it's so easy, why are they not longer? Actually articulating a game, while critiquing it holistically and deconstructing it, presenting your arguments in a way that what you are saying makes sense to the reader, is freakishly difficult. Your can't just say "Breath of the Wild was an unpleasant game to play, I disliked it", you have to go in depth into why and why, because otherwise you fail as a reviewer
Neither of this is meant as an excuse for Filip- I've made my throughts on his abundantly clear, and my thoughts are unveiled contempt. Because what irks me even more than people trying to trivialize or downplay writing is people stealing others' work, which they may have worked hours or days or even weeks on. So no, Filip can go fuck himself. But seriously, stop trying to say or imply that anyone could "type out a review" or "anyone can write". It's offensive. And probably, perpetuating this myth will be the most serious damage Filip's legacy does in the long run, at least within the gaming industry.

Damn. 11 months ago YouTube user ZeldaDraven called him out for copying a video and not a single person replied, liked, or anything. Everyone just kept loving Phil because he was giving away Switches .That's so shitty.
I didn't transcribe and investigated this video a lot, but what may be a starting point is how NihongoGamer explained Left Switch Button and Right Switch Button as "it's like L3 and R3" which is PS terminology and Miucin only referred to them as L3 and R3. It's a tiny short hand which I wouldn't think twice about normally but we know with Miucin at this point he shouldn't get the benefit of the doubt.

It's a weird video anyway because it's very much a product review where you go over the different aspects of it, so you are describing reality. With games, even if they are linear, you put yourself into them a bit because there is an emotional and performative action inherent in them so coming to the exact same conclusion and phrasing is a bit weirder.

I actually just found and watched that nihongogamer review myself and nothing stood out to me either. Not like I transcribed it or anything. But maybe this case isn't like the others.

This is a massive industry, bigger than Hollywood, but there's a lot of flimsy work done covering it. I think it goes all the way back to the total dog shit of early gaming magazines, where this whole thing started as a lark for a much smaller audience that was largely considered to be playing with toys for kids and nerds.

I mean... The game industry is only "bigger" than Hollywood because the games industry counts hardware sales as part of it's s revenue which Hollywood definitely does not.

But you try to continue playing the victim and make it about you.

What on earth are you talking about..?

So what pisses you off is that you were called out, but others weren't?

Not a fan of the hypocrisy, no.

I'm annoyed that I got called out for saying harmless things yet some in this thread were questioning whether or not posting about his fucking family was okay. Pretty sure some of the people claiming I was out of line were posting "I'm not sure if posting about his family is okay".
Like, I'm the idiot for benign speculation about potential mental illness but some posters were twiddling their thumbs on whether or not involving the guy's family was okay or not.

Probably because you have no reason to do that and using mental illness as a scapegoat for every human failing vilifies mentally ill people.

But there is reason. Me and others have stated that his bizarre behavior seems to go beyond normal reasoning. I'm not vilifying anyone or anything, don't put words in my mouth. And what kind of blanket statement is that? Wondering if this guy has mental issues equals every mentally ill person is a villain? Where are you getting this from??

3:40 of this video.

People are looking for sado masochism and bondage in my lyrics and they found them.

Seriously though, what's with putting words in my mouth? I'm not generalizing anything, I have no idea where the idea I'm using mental illness as a scapegoat or deflection is coming from.

And sure, I'll stop speculating on his state of mind cuz I don't know it any better than anyone else here. I never said that I did either. Simply saying this pattern of his of continued, strange, and fucked up behavior doesn't lend itself to a "normal" state of mind. And for the umpteenth time, this in no way absolves him of his actions. Actions have consequences. I said that earlier in this thread or another.

Maybe you would have an easier time understanding the point if you didn't selectively quote.

You complain that someone involved his family because you view this as being a shit thing to do. I agree with this and so did the moderator that permanently banned that poster for this error in judgment.

What more do you want? What injustice do you feel you're being subjected to?
Someone did something shitty and the response was to be permanently banned from ever participating in this forum again.
You are being perceived to have done something shitty and merely got replies by other members with no moderating powers to shut up about it. Now you lament this situation.
Would you prefer a warning from a moderator because the other situation involved a moderator? What's the end game here? Do you want someone to absolve you of your perceived sins so you can continue to speculate on his mental health that drove him to rip off others and manipulate his friends? If you need it: Without any powers granted to me by ERA I allow you this.

Normal members can call out other members for whatever they think and if you think they are overstepping their boundaries then you can report it and a moderator will take action, which they've done in this thread many times.

Perhaps it's because he's already been fired and this toxic need to continue attacking is completely over the top?

Personally i think the backlash should stop only when and if Filip will remove his plagiarized videos on the channel (at least those that have been exposed)

The guy got fired because of the Dead Cells review, but now it's a much bigger deal: it's really hard to defend him, more evidences keep coming everyday, he stole contents from so many channels and websites and he's still making money from it.

EDIT: sorry, someone else already posted the plagiarized FEW preview.

Finding the victims of his plagiarism isn't attacking, it's doing a service to those who have been stolen from.

Plagiarism in journalism is one of the greatest offences. It's not a victimless crime and Filip has profited from the work of others. They deserve to know.

Nobody here is addressing Filip. We are talking about his actions. That's completely legitimate debate and it's not toxic at all to try to find the full scale of his actions.

Do you what *is* toxic? Unashamedly stealing content from others in a wholesale fashion. What else is toxic is calling out those who expose you and blaming everyone else but yourself.

Tell me. If you were a writer and someone was caught plagiarising content in your field and you could possibly be affected, wouldn't you want to know? Or would you still handwave?

The people who deserve sympathy first are the victims. Too often do we see a defence force for those who do wrong. Their sympathy can wait until those affected are fully seen to.

Surely cyberbullying would have to be directed at him. This is just a discussion about him.

Saying bad things about a person isn't bullying. Saying bad things to a person is.
I'm not saying this thread is bullying at all, but this feels like a really naive definition of bullying. There are plenty of ways to make someone's life miserable without directly calling them names to their face.

Personally, I do think a small minority of people have stepped over the line, but the vast majority in this thread seem to be legitimate discussion about the plagiarism . Not trying to bat for the guy at all - I just feel there is a line and it's up to the mods to decide where that is.

Earlier in the thread I asked this:
Which makes me wonder, why is his channel still up?
Can't people send out takedowns for his stolen content? shouldn't they?
No answer was given.
If he's not going to remove the content himself, shouldn't something be done? he's still making money from those videos, using plagiarized content.

People could copyright claim against him as it's clear he's using their copyright works without permission.

Blunt instrument but considering the circumstances? It'll get the channel taken down PDQ.

I tried to report some of his videos last week but apparently youtube doesn't have an option to report a video or a channel for plagiarism.

I think we need a full list and summary of everything that he has plagiarised and copied, key qoutes and all so they don't get lost like farts in the wind or tears in the rain.

Imagine spending ages on writing a review piece, taking ages on it in the hopes that this piece of writing will be the piece that get's you noticed by others and might finally land you a career doing what you love.
Now imagine somebody stealing your hard work and getting paid and praised for it by one of the industries biggest companies whilst your original piece of writing is largely ignored.

I don't find anything in this thread over the top so long as his personal information isn't shared and his family are left alone.
New information is being discovered every day and it effects every single person he stole from, it also has a chain reaction which causes damage to so many peoples careers.... writers, developers and all the staff at IGN.

Come on guys, this guy who was just caught for stealing the handbags of little old ladies has already been caught, no need to try and link his crimes to other muggings, that would be toxic

Come on guys, this company has already been caught dumping waste into rivers, no need to see if they have been doing it on all their sites, that would be toxic

Come on guys, thus guy has been ripping off the work of others, but he's been fired now, it would be toxic to see who else he's ripped off

Come on guys

If for no other reason, this thread needs to continue so that his plagiarism can be documented in each and every instance, especially so that the original writers/content creators can be made aware and properly credited for their work.

Dissapointed in Kinda Funny discussion on this they didn't even question the recruitment process of hiring this guy, they didn't even question how he was under the radar for 10 months in the company even copying co workers work. They didn't even state that IGN made money on even more copied stuff and if they will reimburse the original sources. Al they said is they feel bad for IGN and Brian.

Even Alanah stated his hiring was rushed and IGN was desperate, though she now deleted her tweet

One things for sure, IGN might be done with youtubers for while.

Having watched some of his videos -- yeah, maybe they should be.

IGN has handled the fallout of the initial Dead Cells plagariam accusations well, and have been proactive in taking down all his content on IGN. I don't think they deserve any blame for not detecting the plagarism sooner, or in how they have reacted to the revelations.

But watchig Filip's YouTube videos -- yeah, IGN deserves ridicule and blame for hiring such a hack for their head Nintendo Editor.

It's clear by his YouTube channel he was just another clickbait/'giveaway' YouTuber. I'm not saying that such a thing should blacklist someone from working at IGN, but, it should not be qualifications enough to get hiried to start as the head Nintendo Editor.

It's really telling (or profoundly sad) that they could not have promoted someone within IGN to head Nintendo Editor before a Giveaway YouTuber.

Look at his BotW imperessions video. He says nothing of value. His 'impressions' are vapid, and then he launches into a giveaway spiel (#20KSwitchGiveaway #RoadTo20K).

IGN had nobody else more qualified available to them?

IGN must be nowhere near the powerhouse it once was. I knew they had faltered, but for them to desperate to find someone speaks volumes

Wonder if Gamespot has the same sort of issues?

Even before the plagiarism was discovered I can't say I thought Filip was the best choice for Nintendo Editor. He never had a Wii U, so how could he talk about Nintendo's library from the system?

IGN has handled the blowback well, but it's a wonder they let someone that was so nonchalant about Nintendo become their Nintendo editor...

I think not owning a Wii U isn't a big deal

The key thing was his general Nintendo knowledge was awful. He has had nothing to say, barely gives his opinion, doesn't debate. He just repeats the same stuff and reads the news and asks the audience to let him know in the comments. NVC has been awful with him and the fact IGN did not notice this is crazy. They overlooked someone who doesn't even have great Nintendo knowledge to be a Nintendo editor due to his video editing and presenting skills.

Does GameSpot have editors? Anyone I've ever heard of has left.

How how the Internet video game coverage trends of the last several years affected generalist sites like GameSpot and IGN? It seems like people either want personality-based coverage (your Giant Bomb/Kinda Funny style, or just YouTubers), or they want barely-editorialized marketing content (now delivered straight from the publishers themselves)...

I looked at GameSpot's YouTube channel, and their latest video isn't even a bare trailer reposting -- it's a Ubisoft sponsored video about NFL players learning to play Rainbow Six: Seige. Who the fuck wants that content, besides the GameSpot accountants and Ubisoft marketing department?

They probably didn't question how he was under the radar because they too didn't notice the plagiarism along with everyone else. If anything, they're probably wondering if there are others within Kinda Funny or that they know who have done something similar.

Also, in no journalistic field is there an expectation that that publisher will reimburse the original sources. I don't know why people keep saying this, but it does not happen. The publisher has to take down the plagiarized content (and they can get in trouble if they try to keep it up), but they don't owe restitution for the theft of a former employee.

There's a few things I wanted to say and I said it in a video here: https://youtu.be/rVvOmRU4LjU . However there's a couple points that I thought of. He has REALLY REALLY damaged his own future. With a career over like this most people might go back to get a education and do another trade. He CAN'T do this now with a record like this or going to a TAFE or Uni with evey teacher questioning a test he takes or a assignment to complete.

This also opens up discussion on should we really take stock in Video game writers who have no degree of journalism or any education before jumping into writing for video games. It's a industry I think that most writers don't have one. Who knows maybe I'm wrong.

So IGN does not have to reimburse the money made from stolen content to the original sources?

They hired Filip and he did this under IGN so IGN are responsible. Whether they pay the money from their own pocket or try to get it off Filip is up to them.

Yes they didn't notice he plagiarized but with all the new evidence coming to fruition from the Alanah post about rushed hiring, copied resume, to him plagiarizing his own co workers and of course him just being a overall shit editor for IGN, you telling me none of these podcasts question IGN about all this. The only comments I have heard for the podcasts is they feel sorry for Brain and the oeopeo at IGN. No one has actually stated this oversitr from IGN makes the running of the company and hiring process questionable.

Boomstick should be thanking IGN and Filip for the astonishing amount of publicity Dead Cells has gotten through all this. Couple with it reviewing particularly well with everyone, I'd imagine sales are through the proverbial

Edit: Whoops, Boomstick aren't the developers but his channel sub numbers have also gone through the roof since

Someone saw him at a grocery store.

That's gold.

Man, I can't stop rewatching his apology video after each new discovery. It is so bizarre and fascinating to see his behaviour. The way he talks, the way he shows his "emotions", the body language. He 100% searched for "apology video" on youtube. But there is also something deeply uncomfortable about watching him saying these things.

Maybe they're still figuring out themselves how they should handle this. They did remove all of his content from public view, and Mr. Stapleton did say they were talking to Boomstick Gaming, didn't he? I'm guessing they're still... "processing" all these newer discoveries as they seem to be continually popping up.

I think the Kinda Funny talk not covering certain stuff was maybe Mr. Miller didn't know enough about what was going on with the hiring process of this guy since he wasn't at IGN at the time, and his guest wasn't really a full-time employee at IGN I thought, but a freelancer.
