Earliest last year, President Trump had ordered Bears Ears National Monument & Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments to be significantly reduced in size. Bears Ears was first established by President Obama; Grand Staircase-Escalante was expanded in size by President Clinton.
These National Monuments are public land that belong to every American citizen to explore and enjoy.
Under Trump's order, these two lands were reduced by 85% and ~50% in size, respectively. For Bears Ears, that was a reduction from 1,351,849 acres to 201,876 acres. For Grand Staircase-Escalante, that was a reduction from 1,880,461 acres to 1,006,341 acres.
These lands will be opened up to gas, uranium and oil prospecting.
Various Native American tribal groups are suing the federal government over these actions, as these lands contain a wealth of not only natural beauty but also Native American artifacts and artwork. The lands also contain dinosaur bones and protected wildlife & plants.
Here's a GIF showing Before & After the size reductions:

As of today, the Trump Administration has drafted plans to sell off the formerly public lands to mining & drilling companies:

As of today, the Trump Administration has drafted plans to sell off the formerly public lands to mining & drilling companies:
"The lands Trump tried to cut out of the Staircase have an 'open for business' sign on them. Off-road vehicles, coal mining, drilling and other activities that without a doubt would destroy monument objects would be allowed," said Steve Bloch, legal director for the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance. "Even in areas that remain in the monument, the plan would drive down protections to the lowest common denominator that would result in damage to culture sites, paleontological resources, and riparian areas and wilderness."
