Your post absolutely nails what I think in regard to IGN's blame here. People have to be a lot more realistic about the hiring process.

Aye. I mean, there's always room for improvement, especially if the industry wants to shake off people always saying games 'journalism' with air quotes, but I don't think it's feasible for companies (yet) since there's no actual real way to catch stuff like this unless you harness the power of the internet's collective interest/boredom. Even if you throw some interns into the meat grinder, are you actually going to get results? And is it even a good use of manpower considering that a lot of plagiarism isn't just 1-1 copying, i.e. easily identifiable, and they'd be spending extra time puzzling out potential instances?

His LinkedIn was partly plagiarized. Unless that news came out yesterday. Along with other examples a few pages back.

Too much info to keep up lol

For his LinkedIn thing, it looks extra embarrassing on top of everything else, but it's not uncommon for people to just use templates like that because companies themselves are often searching for those very bullet points/key words for potential employees. I'd say it's just lazy/dumb rather than another 'gotcha', tbh.

From the latest Kotaku article about this clown. Filip's resume on the left, job website template on the right:

You're confusing a call for empathy with a call to ignore/forget/move on from what he did. The case against him can be prosecuted without apathy for him.

I am confused, but not about that. Can you elucidate a bit further?

  1. Do you mean antipathy?
  2. We're not in charge of prosecuting the case against him, and have no ability to determine punishment.
  3. This entire thread is riddled with people asking for empathy for the express purpose of stopping discussion and moving on.
Look, I get what he did is wrong. But this witch hunt is downright nasty. This is what drives people to suicide.

We're talking on an internet forum.

It was poorly worded - I'm sorry about that. If you're serious and not just nitpicking maybe I can clarify:
  • Some sentiments are implying that he was uneducated, therefore didn't know what plagiarism was or that what he did was wrong. While it may be true to some extent, having been taught about plagiarism most likely wouldn't have prevented this.
  • His degree is irrelevant to the bad choices he made. People with extremely impressive degrees make bad decisions all the time.

I was serious. No harm done, I just found it hard to read and wasn't 100% sure what you were saying.

claiming he has some mental illness of sorts. Like no, you are a serial plagiarist and you're done.

Welllllllll if someone behaves in fucked up behavior like this maybe they are mentally ill. Doesn't really excuse his behavior but it could help explain it.

Good Lord. Embarrassing.

Look, I get what he did is wrong. But this witch hunt is downright nasty. This is what drives people to suicide.

I actually also agree with this. I'm not saying we can't discuss this topic but that doesn't stop me from worrying that all this negative attention couldn't have a serious effect on his well being and general health.

I can't believe IGN hasn't taken down their "Babes" content. Frankly, it's shocking they even did that.

Maybe while they're sorting out their house for plagiarism, it would be a good time to start a new thread to call them to task for the blatant sexist content still on their website.

Wait, that shit is still up? Seriously? I remember way back in the day they had that babe section aimed at like 13 year old boys and I always found it so lame.

Why can't we leave the guy alone now? The 'pile on' culture of the internet is so vile.

To add more onto the similar post I just quoted... NO!

If this guy has plagiarised everything he's ever done all instances must be brought to light and the right people credited, imagine Boomstick gaming never noticed, he'd still be on his 10k YouTube subs with a struggling patreon, while Filip's on his 40k a year wage working for IGN off the back of Boomstick Gaming's work, screw making Filip the victim here.

Direct threats to the guy is absolutely shitty and shouldn't happen, but those skeletons in his closet, keep searching Internet.

I mean plagiarism is bad of course, but this old article. Yeesh.

Edit: To avoid derailing here, I just want to say the fact that questionable content like this interview is still up makes me think they may want to hire some contractors to do a deep scrub of all their content.

Why on earth would you double down and challenge the internet to find more instances of your shittery when its all easily available to anybody that wants it?

Did he really think he could pull off a bluff that big? He was already going to be put under heavy scrutiny after the initial incident.

What an incomprehensibly idiotic thing to do. Feel bad for the rest of IGN staff that was unaware of this.

Man, this is a very big shit show. I know some people comment this is a witch hunt, or that he might kill himself and it sucks. I hope he doesn't but he put himself in this spot by himself.

When I saw all the backlash and his fake video I thought of suicide. In today's society, all this attention and protagonism can be good, but also very bad like in this case.

Hope it doesn't come to that but this guy completely ruined his credibility and journalistic integrity. He will not and should not be allowed to work as a journalist in a professional setting ever again. Hope he comes out of it, but he will not by doubling down on it

Ha. Could've sworn I quoted the other guy. Alright, I got nothing.
Hey I came across that comment and thought the same. I don't see him clarifying that it is gaming culture until a later post. So I think your reaction was fair.

People are idiots. A witch-hunt is nothing like this situation, since there is evidence upon evidence. And the people who suggest that he may kill himself and this forum would be to blame are incredibly overplaying their hand.

I just saw the latest Kotaku article in which they pointed out how he also plagiarized his own resume. I'm dead. That's too much. Holy crap.

CHRIST. Gamers deserved to die.
It's always funny when people come in and try to paint it as some minority or fringe attitude. "Not all gamers."

The culture was built on this shit. It permeates everything.

IGN directly profited off stolen work product.

The dude himself is irrelevant at this point. But the people he stole from need to be identified and informed so that IGN can try to make it right.

Ugh, that reminds me of when E3 had booth babes.

Gaming culture has a long ways to go, but it has also come a long way.

This is some CTRL+ALT+DEL tier writing.

Shame on them for publishing this, good on them for taking it down now.

Though to be honest I would feel a lot better about an acknowledgement on IGN's website than a silent sweep under the rug; that's just inviting controversy.

They aren't sweeping anything, Chobot's history in the industry is very well documented. In any event, this thread seems like a poor place to relitigate a 13 year old artifact of gaming culture, despite how distasteful it is.

I like how everyone is surprised when there's someone from IGN in the ERA forums who's talked to us about this whole ordeal. Of course they're going to clean up other suss articles while doing the sweep.

IGN directly profited off stolen work product.

The dude himself is irrelevant at this point. But the people he stole from need to be identified and informed so that IGN can try to make it right.

Yeah the legal ramifications of this is probably the biggest driving factor behind scrubbing the site.

Filip in his castle of gold with his $40,000 salary!

(I know what you're getting at, but I just through the definitely-lowballed figure was funny.)
