This is a problem that people do not need to have. Just buy the console that you like most.

I am a Nintendo only player and only buy the games that I want to play.

A handheld and a home console were my limit. It is just silly to have more than 3 active consoles because you do not have time to all of them.
Same goes for more than 2 kids

I only have two in use, PC and Switch, and they are more than enough.

I basically retired my 3DS and Wii U with a ton of unfinished games. I don't even think of systems before those.

Probably yeah, at the moment i have:

PS4 x2 (one base, one slim)
PS3
PS2 x2 (one base, one slim)
PS1 x2 (two base models)
SNES
N64
Gamecube
Wii
Wii U
Switch
og XBOX
GameBoy x2 (one base, one pocket)
GameBoy Advance SP x3
Gaming PC

+ thre shelves full of games for all these platforms. I should probably really get rid of some of this stuff. Because i don't have much other interests or responsibilities i have no backlog or choice overload though, i can easily play multiple games at once, no problem.

At one point I had an Xbox 360, Xbox, PS3, PS2, PSX, Dreamcast, Gamecube, Saturn, N64, SNES, NES, Genesis with Sega CD and 32X, GBA, NEO GEO Pocket and a pretty healthy game collection for each. I had always loved to collect games and movies but I got to the point where it was just too much. I sold off nearly everything save the 360 and PS3 and resigned myself to the fact that I wasn't capable of caring for that collection anymore. It had become a burden to deal with and I got tired of keeping up with it all. I miss it from time to time and wonder if I had kept going where I'd be now but I have pictures and memories so I'm happy. Here's what the main set up looked like at one point with most of the systems present:

This doesn't take into account the 1000+ DVDs I owned at the time too. I was in collecting heaven.

I feel you OP. I'm in the same situation with Switch/PS4/PC. My backlog for just one system is huge. Doesn't help that I take fucking forever to finish a game.

Thankfully no, just going back and forth to the Switch and PS4.

I'm actually glad Microsoft haven't produced anything to make me yearn for an Xbox, it's saved me a lot of money and time.

In use?

PS4
XBO (barely touch it)
Switch
3DS (almost retired)
Gaming Laptop

I also have a GC, Wii U, Wii, PS2 (broken) and a PS3 that I dust off when I want to play something not available on the other machines.

I have a lot of consoles, however a bunch of them are stored away for now until I move. Maybe I'll plug them in some day when I have a nice room to put all that stuff in.

Right now I have my PC, Xbox One X, PS4 Pro and the Switch hooked up to my B7A. I catch up on games depending on the day, its weird but works. For example, Xbox/PS4 SP stuff on Tuesdays, /Switch SP stuff on Mondays.

Hopefully with my new schedule in two months I'll be able to play a bit more

Heh, I was only even posting the ones I have in use/current ones. I have a PS2 and 3 as well as an xbox 360 with a kinect (as well as a Vita, a gameboy, and a Nomad <- played this one for like 5 minutes at most but bought when I had a good job and it was really cheap and quickly realized why it failed).

Let's see whats collecting dust...

X1X - primary gaming system
Switch - gets played a few times a week
3DS - my in the bathroom console
PS4 Pro - old dusty pants. I turn it on to update it and sometimes run through a section of yakuza if there's nothing else to play
PC - not playing games on my laptop
Raspberry Pi - used during parties for that retro goodness.
NES/SNES Classic - on the shelf for display purposes

That's it. Older consoles like my dreamcast are boxed up

And to answer OP, no. Never too many. Play what you like. Get what you like. Enjoy yourself.

I definitely have this exact issue. I have an insatiable thirst to own/keep all consoles, along with collecting retro classics. Compound that on top of the over-saturation we have today with game releases, it makes my backlog list overwhelmingly long. I used to be really frustrated by having such an extensive backlog, but now I have come to appreciate it and take solace in the fact I always have something new (to me) to play. There are so many great titles out there to experience on all platforms, and it can definitely be hard to realize I won't get to experience them all.

Boy do I miss the good old days of being up to date and current with nearly every release!

yep, this would be my problem too. I take much longer to finish a game than most people and definitely more than even what the developer claims. Unless it's a game that was only ok.

Honestly, I think the sweet spot for me is a main game machine and a handheld (I think that combo is enough to easily keep me sated long as the handheld is only relegated to being played at times I'm away from my console).

I've got:
NES (2)
SNES
Genesis
N64
Game Boy Color (2)
PSOne
GameCube
Game Boy Advance (4)
PlayStation 2 (2)
PlayStation Portable
Nintendo DS

Nintendo 3DS
Xbox 360
PlayStation 3
PlayStation Vita
PlayStation 4 (1 Pro and 1 Slim)
PC
RetroPie Console
And I'll be getting a Switch next year.

I feel like they can be had pretty cheaply on ebay. What's the best item in your collection (pics?)?
I would post pics but we literally packed everything up a few days ago, getting ready to move next week! In terms of games my best items are Panzer Dragoon Saga and Snatcher but in terms of consoles it's probably the complete set of Mega Drive/Genesis revisions with Sega CD's and 32x.

Yes, but as other people have pointed out, it's because backwards compatibility is an issue.

PS3, PS4, PSP & PSTV (allows me to play the 20+ years of PlayStation titles)
Xbox One X (15+ years of Xbox titles)
Nintendo Switch & SNES Classic (allows me to play the new & old Nintendo titles)

Slimmed them down earlier this year
Sold my PSP/PSV/PS2/PS3/360/Wii + all games

Then traded PS4/XB1 for Pro/X

Still feel I should just keep one but love both of their exclusives

I honestly can't afford to keep up with games at my current pace without giving up the old to subsidize the cost of moving forward. I didn't keep anything from last gen -- no more Wii, WiiU, PS3, or 360. I had to trade them all in to even get my PS4.

Over the course of this gen, I've found a decent-paying and relatively stable job, so I can definitely afford some more preservation when the next gen rolls around, and my PS4 physical collection is the largest I've ever amassed in my life, mostly because I would subsidize new game purchases with trade-ins in the past, but not anymore!

I still have a PS2, Dreamcast, and N64 tucked away. I had a SNES but it wouldn't work last time I tried to hook it up. Outside of that, it's all gone, save for current gen platforms.

Currently:
- PS4 Pro
- Switch
- Xbox One X
- New 3DS XL
- Vita (3000, imported from Japan for the lime/white color)

Yes, too many. Off the top of my head, I have:

Game Boy Color
Game Boy Advance (OG, backlit)
Game Boy Advance SP 101 (2 of these)
Game Boy Advance Micro
DS Lite
DSi
DSi XL
PSP
PSP Go
PS Vita (two of these, second one is for homebrew)
Vita TV
Wii
Wii U
Switch (2 of these, second one is for homebrew)
3DS (OG, black)
3DS (OG, turquoise)
n3DS (white, main system)
n3DS (black, for homebrew)
n3DS (white, backup system)
n3DS (black, another backup system)
n3DS XL

I think that's everything unless I've forgotten something. I also have the NES and SNES mini systems.

EDIT: forgot my Game Boy Micro and PSP Go.

I can't think of a single reason to ditch any of them:
  • Gameboy
  • PS3
  • WiiU
  • PS4
  • 3DS
  • Switch (will arrive to me soon)

I feel really sad that I ditched my previous consoles...so I'll list them too!
  • SNES
  • N64
  • GBA
  • XBOX360

Very cool. MGS4's mini bot that Snake uses is a throwback to Snatcher right?

Yea I have more than I need but its nice to have choices.

I play most online mp games on ps4 because many of my friends are there

I play single player AAA games (witcher 3, fallout 4, skyrim with mods ect.) on my PC because they look and run best on a powerful rig

I play most indie games on switch because the portability of the system allow me to play and finish them.

Yes, and it's Sony / Nintendo's fault. I would love to get rid of my PS3 and Wii U but I have too many games that are trapped on those consoles.

I'm ok with just a Switch at the moment, there's more than I can feasibly play on it anyway, my eshop wish list is over 100 titles long now.

My Vita is just about retired now and my 3DS I can't see me using for much other than Etrian Odyssey Nexus next February, so it's on a six month hiatus before it's last hurrah.

In terms of backlog I've got a couple of 3DS RPGs I'll probably not get around to, and I really must finish Steamworld Heist. I got rid of all of my older platforms and games (apart from my DS favourites that I could play in the 3DS) about five years ago, and really don't miss them at all.

I'm much better at planning than I used to be- I know I'll get lost in Monster Hunter GU in a couple of weeks and so haven't really bought much in ages, just finished a couple of smaller indies like Bomb Chicken as while waiting.

Yes, if it werent for Fist of the North Star and Yakuza I would have sold my PS4 years ago.

And I don't get rid of Xbox because I'm yet to play Panzer Dragoon and I have a small hope of Resonance of Fate becoming BC.

One current gaming machine is enough for me. Unfortunately I have a Switch and a PS4 and there are just too many games to play. I also really want to buy a gaming pc, but I do realize that it wouldn't make any sense.

I was happy when I had just a Wii U. The choice of games was quite limited, but it made me try almost all of them. I didn't know that I liked RPGs before I played Xenoblade Chronicles X, for example.

I would be happy with my Switch only, but I have bought so many interesting games for PS4 that I haven't played yet, so I don't want to sell it. But I am quite sure that next gen I'll skip PS5 and just get the Switch successor whenever it comes.

Edit: I also have a 2DS and a SNES Classic and I think I can't resist buying a NES Classic, too...

It depends on who you ask. I feel my collection is very humble and lacking in so many areas. My wife and my bank account say I collect too much.

I'm mostly focused on Nintendo stuff.

I own almost one of everything, and in that regard I don't feel like I have too many.

I own more than one of some things, and in that regard I definitely have too many.

Yes. I typically only buy PS and Xbox, but this gen I got sucked into the Switch hype and its been a big letdown for me other then Xenoblade 2. Hopefully SMT 5 and whatever other exclusive JRPG's they bring to it deliver.

Nope.

PlayStation 4 Pro, Xbox One X and Nintendo Switch is more than enough. Once next generation arrives, the current consoles will get traded in towards the next gen consoles.

I actually DO feel this way. I'm finishing off my backlog on PS4 and then putting it away and just having my Switch out. Not because I don't like the PS4 library, but because there's enough on Switch for me (or at least there will be after this dry spell) to play.

I've got an NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, GameBoy Player unlocked with GBI, a Wii, a Switch, an OG DS, a 3DS, a slim PS2, a PSP 3000, a slim PS3, the silver Arkham Knight PS4 and I just built a new PC with a Ryzen 5 2600 and a GTX 960. I could use an XBox One X, I think, and a beefier GPU when the time comes.

I certainly do have too many (I have over 100 games each for all my Nintendo consoles for example), but I get a kick out of it, so why not? In no order:

N64
GameCube
Wii (2)
Wii U (7)
PS4
XB1
N3DSXL
Game Gear
GameBoy
NES Classic
SNES Classic

I do regret selling some old systems though:

Sega Master System II
Sega Mega Drive II
Sega Saturn
PS1
PS2
Super Nintendo

Main TV: Switch, PS4, NES Classic
Second TV: Switch, PS3, Wii U, SNES Classic
Third TV: GameCube, N64, PS2

I also have a PSVR that'd be plugged in if I had a good network environment for PS4 remote play.

If I can, I want to eventually get rid of the PS3 and PS2 (there are a handful of games I go back to like DDR, Katamari, Demon's Souls, and PS1 classics) and I'd really like to see a N64 Mini just for the space-saving potential (I doubt it'd have the games and features I'd want, though). At that point, I think I'd be at my sweet spot for consoles on deck.

edit: this isn't counting GBA x2, DS Lite x3, and 3DS x4

Might sound facetious, but isn't owning a 360 'too much'? It's that middle ground of 'you're probably not going to play it for single player, and you can't play multiplayer games on it'

Skimming up, most people have already gotten rid of their 360 or PS3. It's a middle child console lol

I still have mine, but I haven't played it for years until my bro wanted to join me a few days ago on it.

I have 3 (Switch, PS4, 3DS) but I've been generally cutting back on my buying habits nowadays due to both a lack of time and dedication. I haven't bought a game for PS4 in over a year, haven't bought any 3DS games since November of last year, and I buy a new Switch game every 2-3 months at most. Despite all of that, I still have trouble tackling the current roster of games that I have on the Switch.

And yes sometimes I feel super depressed thinking I have to many games to play, I worry that I will never be able to play all of them, also considering the new ones that I will buy when they'll come out.

No, I gave my PS3s and 360 to my Nan, Grandad and Mum to use as Netflix boxes. So just 2 PS4s and 1 XB1 in my house at the moment. With the option to borrow my Sister's Switch.

I'll probably get my own Switch next year with it's Pokemon game, Let's Go doesn't do anything for me, as Nuzlocking doesn't seem possible and it's the only way I can play Pokemon nowadays.
