Credit to GameXplain! Some of the stages received more a facelift than I thought.

Even bigger improvement than I thought. Colours look much better too. Completely debunks the thought that the colour palette was somewhere between Brawl and Wii U. I think the pastel Pokemon just threw people off.

Bridge of Eldin is finally nice to look at, no more overly harsh lighting and muddy background textures.

It's nice to see the improvements they've made even to the Wii U stages, though the real magic is in how much better the 3DS, Brawl, and Melee stages look now.

I far prefer the more vibrant colors of the Wii U game. Hopefully they tweak the colors more before launch to make them at least a little more saturated.

I'm impressed with the subtle changes they make to the N64 stages that improve them, but clearly "prioritize nostalgia." The stages look less like they did before, and more like I remember them looking.

outside of coding, the 3DS stages look like they just had to be straight up remade lol
which was probably a lot of effort.

edit:
Norfair's lava looked like that on Wii U? wow huge change.

TP bridge of eldin probably had that Fog and harsh sun to hide the Low Poly and completely flat plain.

The texture from the plain to the cliff doesn't even change.
The ground texture just extends down the cliff side lol.

not saying it's wrong to prefer it if that's what someone likes, but when I see that pic, that's the reasoning I feel. Like n64 fog.

I'm so mad that I'm going to have to buy a Switch just for this

Damn you Smash Bros

always getting me to buy Nintendo consoles

Graphics look solid, and I thought Wii U was a looker.

I love to rag on some of Gamexplain's videos as much as the next nerd, but man, this is a really cool idea and nicely executed. Hats off, GX. They probably should've included one of those "all Smash Ult content subject to change between now and launch" disclaimers, which I'm keeping in mind, but certainly interesting to see how much effort is going into this jump from Wii U just based on stage geometry alone.

I love the N64 stages, they're more improved than I thought but they're done in a way that still keeps the "old" feel. Pretty cool.

Some of these upgrades are ridiculous. I always thought Smash 4's lighting looked incredibly flat--especially after MK8. I'm so glad to see Ultimate fixing that, on top of adding so many details to the stages.

.....what? sorry but...no Lol. It's just a visual impression, lighting in Ultimate is literally one generation ahead (pbr).

i meant artisticly obviously, the way they choose to light up the background! of course the ultimate one is better if you talk only about the technical side of it, but the lightning used in the wii u one for this stage has way more charm

It's funny but on the right the details, from the canyon to the sky/clouds and the mountains, just give more BotW vibes. Maybe that's what they're going for.

Now I kind of want a pseudo-sequel to TP where you can climb and explore everything between the extremely tiny corridors you were funneled down before.

Smash Wii U looks so dull in comparison, which is funny cause I remember thinking Brawl was so dull-looking compared to Wii U (man, Brawl was an ugly game).

It'd be really cool to also get a character comparison to see how each have evolved over the course of the series.

To be fair, 99% of Wii U games looked poor compared to Mario Kart in my opinion.

I thought Smash looked great for what it had to do, 1080p which was necessary for character visibility as well as 60 fps with up to 8 player Smash.

What's interesting is that the flatness depending on the stage's lighting a lot.
That's why I liked whenever Gaur Plains for example came up on For Glory, because the lighting on that stage was great for the character models. While other stages weren't as much.

I actually don't see much of a difference in the stages, beyond a few like Xenoblade and Eldin Bridge. They don't look much better to me, outside of upgrades to the old Melee ones,

Most of them are upgraded, some look quite similar.

Only one wherein prefer the wii u over the switch version is for Green Hill zone. I prefer the colours of green Hill zone Wii u, although Ultimate might be more faithful to how it looks in Sonic Generations

Maybe on a broad composition level, but if you look closely at the details everything has been reworked. Better textures, lighting, details, etc. But yeah its designed to look like you remember it but improved.

Even the animal crossing stage has completey different textures
